Normandy Invasion, June 1944

U.S. Soldiers of the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, move out over the seawall on "Utah" Beach, after coming ashore. Other troops are resting behind the concrete wall.
Photo dated 9 June 1944, but probably taken on "D-Day", 6 June 1944.

I think that is a 1903 right in the middle of the shot. Look at all the pock marks in that wall!!! Not where I would want to be.

Very cool! Thanks

Thanks Mark, great pic of D-Day. Bill I see the '03, and Jim that is an M1A1 on the wall. The pack has binoculars and may belong to the soldier with the netting on his helmet. Don't forget how scattered the units became and the confussion of the initial assault. There were many mixed units, Infantry, Rangers, Airborne, Engineers, etc. that hooked up and fought togther in those early hours. The ability to improvise was one of the reasons that the invasion succeeded.....Frank
