a quetion for you learned gentlemen. while digging through a pile of metal in my friends workshop yesterday i found a trapdoor reciever with what appears to be a carbine barrel loosely threaded in. it's marked model 1884 and the serial number is either 431693 or 481698. do any of these numbers fall in the range of known carbines? thanks for looking.

Free,
I think the 1st would be 1888, and the second 1889. They made 5000 carbines in 1888 and 5000 in 1889 so im sure ether # would fall in there.

thank you sir for the reply. after soaking it all day in oil i got the action to open. the barrel (removed from the receiver) measures 22 inch. the hammer cocks and the trigger works.

Sounds like you got a bit more than a barreled reciever;)

That's a neat find. Do you have the gun or is your friend keeping it?

The stock doesn't look broken, but rather deliberatly shortened.

Ive read where the indians were big on making the stock's shorter and useing the metal stock plate for making tool's. Just a guess:dunno:.
If it were mine id put it back togeather somehow.
It would make a great wall hanger.
Still a part of our Hisitory.

CAFDFW: i have the gun, he owed me some money that i will never see so i took the gun as a payment
IBOOS and JOHN SUKEY: it looks like the stock was cut down to resemble a recoil pad
