View Full Version : Proper finish for Savage No 4

I have a Savage No. 4 with an immaculate 2 grove barrel.

I need to know what type of finish to use on the barreled action that would be the correct finish.

Serial number is 56CXXXX

The exposed metal was badly rusted, but an overnight bath in Evaporust (Which I HIGHLY reccoment) has solved the rust problem, hopefully for good...

Also, would the misc parts, including barrel bands, trigger guard, screws, and the metal that's pinned to the wood be finished the same way, or would it be painted?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A 56C was probably blued, though parkerizing wouldn't surprise me overly. What finish was on it when you received it?

It would not be painted unless it had been rebuilt in England, India or some other commonwealth country besides Canada.

I have a 72C and 84C, both appear to be blue, wheather or not they are original is quite hard to tell but, my best guess would be they are not re-builds, HTH -SDH

Seems likely. The only definitely parked Savage non-refurb I owned was a 0CXXXXX - late 1944 production.

It is my understanding that Savage used the DuLite process, conventional hot bluing. DuLite Corp. is still in the business.

that's my understanding too. It would seem also that the rough machine finish on late production Savage No.4's could be making the Dulite (blue) look like park. It's possible the one I had wasn;t really parked ;)

Most of the Savages I've looked at looked greyish...certainly not gloss blue. It's probably the DuLite blue on unpolished metal.

My one Savage is patina as one would find on guns with old bluing, but, the patina is pretty much totally covered the gun, the other is an un-buffed blued finish just starting to turn. Old and blue, but, just fine for me-SDH
