Hi folks. I've always loved milsurp guns, and really, military style and ex-military firearms have always been my strongest area of firearms interest. I build and collect Mosin & AK rifles and now an FAL or two.
But I'll be square.. the main reason I joined is that a member on AR15.com referred me here to get some info on a couple of 03 Springfields that my dad-in-law owns. He's a Nam vet and, and mom-in-law is racking up crazy medical bills.. so he needs to sell a bunch of guns to help her out.
Hopefully, I can get some help on valuing these guns for sale. Thanks very much on behalf of the whole fam. God bless!

I have a No. 4 Mk 1 with stock markings I can't identify.
There is a ZF stamped in and stencilled on the right buttstock.
There is a 1" by 1" square hand painted on the left buttstock.
There is the number 40 hand painted on the underside front end of the forearm.
I hope that someone can identify these marks for me.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer me.

Glad to be on board. Have a few military weapons: 8mm Lebel, 03A3, m1 carbine and a Mauser 1937 P-08. Right now looking for serial number information on the m1 carbine (Inland) that I recently acquired from CMP. Hope to spend a lot of time on Milsurps site.

Hello, new member here. I just love world war I and II history and have taken a particular interest in the period firearms. I don't even have a license yet but I hope to soon. From Canada and I have a Steyr M95M (never shot it and it hasn't been shot for 30 - 40 years to the best of my knowledge). I got it in a backhanded sort of way.
HI guys,
my first post here. I am a high mileage poster, [ was issued my first M1 garand in 1961].
although I have my DCM garand I am not much of a poster. I do enjoy reading all the great info from y'all so I may not burn up the keys but I will be around enjoying all your posts.

Good evening Gentleman;
I am a long time shooter and collector. One of my interests is in old battle rifles. I have an M1 Garand, numerous SKS's, a few No.1 Mk.III's, and a couple of 2A No.1 Mk.III's. As you can see I really like the No.1 Mk.III and it's place in history along with it's durability.
I am really looking forward to learning more about my M1 Garand, along with whatever experience I can contribute to the group.
Sincerely,
Chris Lewis

Hello everyone. Glad to be in the company of so many knowledgeable folks. I've been collecting milsurp rifles for 20 years -- bought the first one (SMLE) at a Woolworth's in the local mall. Can't do that anymore.
I dabble in rifles over a wide period, but focus on contract mausers, primarily for South America.

I am mainly interested in military firearms, having a small collection of WW2 era. I believe I have been afflicted with the Enfield syndrome

Hi to all, I use to visit this site to gain valuable information but have been busy with life for a few years and am now back on the hunt for answers. I have loved military weapons since I was a young kid. I remember having a plastic M1 Garand that shot plastic bullets before I was 6 years old. Love WWII stuff! Probably a lot more questions than answers. Looking forward to the interaction.

The handle tells how young I am. The M1 Gerand has given me more than one fat lip and sore right thumb:( That was the weapon for the rifle team before the M14 was introduced. I spent twenty seven of my thirty six months goofing off on the best duty possible! I am looking for information on the M1 Carbine. That is what was carried during guard duty (did a lot of that when not on the team). I have one now and another on the way from the CMP. Hope this doesn't turn into some kind of a passion:) You never know!!!

I've only been collecting about 2 yrs. Have:
1944 Izzy M44 (round)
1944 Izzy M91/30 (round)
1942 Savage Enfield No.4 Mk.1*
194x vz.24 8mm Mauser
1943 Smith-Corona M1903-A3
1986 CZ-82 9x18mm Makarov
and two more mosins on the way, one likely 1920's or 30's hex M91/30, one likely 1940's ex-sniper round receiver.
Am I not allowed to post a new thread for awhile? I tried posting a thread and it just... kinda disappeared.

My name is Rob and I am a new member. I recently purchased an Enfield 1918 SMLE and already have some questions. I am new to collecting military guns, I have always collected Bayonets and Trench Knives.
I have done alot of research with the Enfield rifles and I am a little baffled by the information the seller gave me on mine.
My rifle has stamped on the right side by the bolt with the Enfield Seal on top, below that is the name Enfield
1918
SMLE
III =
The left side has stamped FIR
1931
On the barrel in front of the breach is stamped R 5784 which I assume is the serial number.
When I purchased this rifle, the seller told me it was a 7x57 cal., but I cannot find where Enfield ever made a 7x57 cal.
Can anyone tell me if this is correct or is this a .303?

Just would like to say Hi,to everyone. I've been gunsmithing for a bout 2 years now and have always enjoyed gun since I was a little boy and now it has become a passion of mine,I try to travel to all the Gun Shows that I can attend,I love coming across any old fixer upper that I can buy and fix it up to show room condition, and well the last gun show I attended was in Tipton IN and well I came across a old 1930 enfeild and it has been made into a .410 shotgun pretty cool gun,but I have a question for anyone who might know where I can find a .303 barrel for this gun? It was made inito a .410 shotgun for the India army I believe? not realy sure but I'm intersted in turning it back into a .303 rifle. I have been looking all over the internet trying to find out more on this but can't seem to find out where anyone has anything to offer so if any of you gun buffs can help me out? I would greatly appreciate it THANK YOU, GOD BLESS:sos:

Dear Rob,
SMLE only came in .303 and a training version Morris tubed in .22, yours is a MK 3 and the 1931 date indicates that it may have been rebarreled then,in the absence of proof marks, possibly carried out in the US. You will have to try a .303 and 7x75 round and see what one fits the chamber, do it gently!!

Hello all,
I've been reloading 30+ years, former Marine Ordnanceman and I collect Milsurp, obviously. Shooters, not museum peices. I'm hoping I learn something here as well as find entertaining discussion of older arms. (1st Milsurp is a 98k I got at 12 years old. Still have it 40 years later!)

Hi crew,
I've been "accumulating" for over 40 years.
I'm into US Military and collect everything from the civil war to present.
I've gathered more than a few, but not quite enough.
I just purchased a mystery 1917 winchester and thought you guys might help answer some questions.
This 1917 has the rear sight guts removed and has a 1903 springfield rear sight installed on the barrel(with a professionally modified hand guard) and 1903 front sight.
Anybody have a clue how it came to be??
I would appreciate any info.
thanks,

New member and already worthwhile. Learned about "THE load" by CE Harris and was astounded that I had never heard of it before! Checked my powder magazine and I am off tomorrow to buy a can of Red Dot, assuming I can find/afford it in Central Texas. My knowledge base is small so I'll mostly lurk and learn.

Hello
I'm a new kid on the block. I don't know if I'm considered a collector or not but I've accumulated a few guns over the years thru the personal challenge of the shooting sports. I really enjoy Service Rifle matches with my AR15 and USPSA with a .45.

Dear Dan,
Noted your interest in Lee Enfields , I have a P14 .303 made by Winchester fitted with the Win A5 scope for WW1 sniping. I beleive the US Marine Corps used this configuration for the LE P17 in 30-06 circa 1915. I do not think they ever saw service as the British Army stored them and issued them to the Home Guard in 1940. Have you seen any other American LEs in this configuration?

I am an old fart who has just purchased his first M1 Garand and M1A. I have been around and used guns most of my life but mostly for hunting. Now that I am retired I have a new pasion, shooting small grouped holes in paper.
There are so many possible variations of M1 assemblies that I am confused.
The M1 I purchased is a July 2008 CMP SN#5,868,XXX Springfield with a Winchester trigger. CMP rebarrelled the gun
As a general question, What are the top quality of components used today to make a good accurate shooter?

Just wanted to say Hi to all y'all here on the forum and tell you a bit about myself.
I live in South Carolina, I'm retired due to health reasons. Among other things I had a kidney transplant several years ago which worked out well. My major hobbies include most aspects of firearms (collecting, shooting, reloading, gunsmithing) and my other main hobby is collecting and restoring antique tube radios. I'm also a HAM (KF4CZV). I did 10 years in the U.S. Navy (mid 70's-80's). I've had many milsurp firearms in the past but they were long since sold to pay medical bills. I am in the process of starting a new milsurp rifle collection, albeit a more modest one. I recently bought a nice Mosin-Nagant 91/30 hex receiver rifle and am about to order one of the Mossberg 44US training rifles from the CMP. It's a start! :)

I retired last year from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and I live in beautiful Mountain Home, Arkansas. I plan on spending more quality time shooting and reloading. I have recently started shooting cast bullets and light, target loads in some of my military rifles. My favorite calibers are
.22 Rimfire, .44 Magnum, .45-70, 7.62 x 39, and 7.62 x 54R.
I am an Oklahoman by birth, an Illinoisan by circumstance, and an Arkansan by choice. I enjoy reading, visiting online shooting forums, and anything that is related to reloading, shooting and hunting.
I feel blessed to live in America, and I'm proud to be a member of the Cherokee Nation. I wish everyone good health, many friends, and the freedom to exercise our Second Amendment rights. I'm looking forward to learning and sharing information with other forum members.

Hello all, new to collecting. Have a Springfield 03a3 that I got from my father, a Turk Mauser, M38 Mosin-Nagant, Spanish 1916 Mauser and a K-31. Also a Springfield 1903 that my dad started to sporterize many moons ago and I'm in the process of finishing. These along with the requisite rifles, shotguns, pistols and various ammo to go along with them. I plan on visiting often for tips and info.

Hi there everyone.. Well I just got my first rifle in about 30 years. First one was just a 22 rifle as a teenager. But sold that. Now that I'm into military collecting (vehicle, uniform, etc), through a friend I "bought" a Savage No.4 Mk1, full wood and looks well used and original. Definately needs a real good cleaning before firing. And this weekend I'm taking my PAL (Cdn Possesion and Acquistion License) so I can legally own this rifle, ammo and maybe collect other ones.. Wifey is real upset over my new item, am not sure she'll get over it. Too bad though...
where can I get a manual for this Savage rifle? Or will a Lee Enfield manual do just the same thing? thanks.........grant

Seen your web-site while looking for info on Dockendorff sights.I noticed a line sight article .I picked up a Dockendorff Line Sight last weekend ,as new with the box and with the origional papers insde. It is a universal sight that could be put on just about anything. It has a great deal of vertical adjustment and the only restriction would be barrel size.It would not fit on a shotgun as another fellow suggested.Hope this imformation is helpful.Looking forward to this web-site.Always looking for imformation on sights and stuff.Material sometimes hard to find, but sometimes it just appears. Thanks for the time and space.

Hello all, Akulahawk here, just dropping a note to say Hello!
As the thread title states, I'm not new to gun forums. I'm active on several, and they're mostly California centric. For those of you that don't know, California (to it's surprise, I'm sure) is going to be at the forefront of 2A court cases. Recently, a 9th Circuit case incorporated the 2nd against the states in the 9th Circuit. There are already court cases that have been filed that attack various portions of California's laws based on this ruling.
Change is happening... and probably not to Obama's, Pelosi's, Feinstein's, or Reid's liking.

Hi everyone. Joined this forum to gain information on WWII military rifles. I have IHC M1 Garand and i recently acquired VZ24's. The three VZ24's were stored in a very damp place and all three stocks are in bad shape. Because of health issues I've not been able to quite dis-asssemble all three of the VZ24's. The stocks are interesting. One has Chinese or Japanese characters etched on the stock, one is obviously a K98 stock and the last one has probably the best wood, not split or cracked, but the rifle must have been stored in a swimming pool!! At least 3 1/2 inches from the buttplate up has rotted away. Any way I have a feeling I'll learn alot from all of you. Thanks!!

Guess I need to introduce myself or else I'm gonna see that message at the top saying I haven't done so yet till I die of old age. :)
Been on here for a while just lurking as I don't feel I'm much of an expert at any of the military rifles, altho I've owned, at one time or another, and shot all the official military rifles of the USA back to the Rev. War.
Been shooting one kind of a rifle or another since I was 8.
Currently playing with a Garand, for which I'd like to find a new, short-chambered barrel for. The one it has is good enuf for jacketed bullets but I want to start using it in the CBA Military Postal Comp.'s and the current barrel tends to foul up to much (i.e. - a bear to clean!) when shooting cast bullets.
Did very well shooting an '03 Springfield so thought I'd give the Garand a try.
So, if anyone knows where I can get one I'd sure appreciate it.

Hi everybody - another new member. I have had guns for 20 years but just recently got interested in military surplus. I bought a FN FAL and have just started realizing what a neat rifle it was and is. In fact I found the forum as I was searching for some info but now that I am here I am having a hard time finding anything related to the FN FAL. Am I doing something wrong or have I misunderstood the forum. Anyway I will spend more time looking around. Glad to make your acquaintance.

Hey yall
I am a new member here, thought this might be a good place to get some information. Googled winchester 1917 and came up with bunches of results several from here.
About 15 yrs ago my father in law gave me a rifle that he got in a barrel of guns, yes thats right a barrel of guns. He was in the National guard many many years ago and the government was selling off surplus guns for $50 a barrel. Well he bought one and in it was 2 german mausers, 2 japanese rifles, 2 russian rifles, 2 american, and a couple that he didnt know anything about plus a couple of hand guns.
To make a long story short he gave me onf of the american rifles. I had various hunting guns so I just kinda stuck that one in the gun cabinet and forgot about it. My step son was looking at them the other day ( he is into video games call of duty being one of them) and thought the rifle looked like a german kar 98. He askedme about it and I had no real information to give him so I started trying to find out about it my self.
It is marked winchester on top of the reciever with a sn 407984.
Behind the front sight there is a round ball with what looks like fire on it with 8-18 stamped into the barrel, there is a w stamped into the bolt handle and another one stamped into the front sight. Afew other ball and fire stamps appear on the gun at various places as well eagle heads stamped into the furniture. It is in good shape just a few dings in the wood and a couple of scratches on the ears of the rear sight. The barrel looks as if it has never been fired before.
Any information I can get would be greately appriciated.
Thanx

I've been a member for a while, actually started on the old forum, just havn't been active on here since it started. no particular reason, just been busy trying to keep my head above water in this failing economy. as a small business owner, it's been ( and continues to be) tough. Might even have to cut a couple of carbines loose just to have some operating capital. Hope it doesn't come to that, and I'll try to be more contributive on here. feels good to be back so to speak.

Good evening all,
I am a soon to be Garand owner looking around for info when I stumbled across this site. I already greatly appreciate the depth of information and knowledge pertaining to the Garand for me to sift through.
I am also a big shotgun fan, currently looking for good info on shotgun tactics.
Thanks for letting me join your little corner of the web here, I will try not to dirty up the place.

I've been collecting for a little over a year now. Started with a sporterized 1903 RIA. Now have over 20 different firearms in the safe.
I've grown to really love the military milsurp rifles. the garand being my favorite. Nothing sweeter to shoot. But, all are fun to get out on the range. From the Russion Mosin-Nagants to the lee enfield to the 1903 and the garand. The wife only wishes I'd taken up needle point. LOL
New to the board, I live in Denmark / Europe.
I am quite new to collecting and shooting milsurps so I am sure
I can learn a lot from you!

Like most of you my interests vary- right now my favorites are refurbishing and maybe just occasional target shooting of the weapons who's care I'm fortunate enough to have been entrusted. We are after all only curators of pieces of history.

Hello to everyone, I am a long time advocate and admirer of the shooting sports, although not much of a collector. My favorite firearms are the M1 rifle and .45 acp pistol, so you see I am old school. I purchased a Springfield Armory M1 back in the 80's and finally bought Mr. Duff's data book to see if I had a re-weld. So here I am and hopefully I won't ask too many newby questions about re-habing an M1.

Hi all. I am a new member. I bought a service grade HRA M1 Garand and a salvage grade M1917 Enfield at the CMP north store in March 09. I have been interested in military history all of my life. The recent change in our government and probable attacks on the 2nd amendment motivated me to finally buy these great rifles. I have put about 120 rds through the M1 but am having a gunsmith check out my M1917 before I can play with it. This forum looks like a great source of information, especially on the M1917.

hi everybody,
i am new here and new to collecting mil surplus. a local retailer went out of business and i bought two C.A.I. Enfields. one seems to be a Savage and the other i am having trouble identifying. i will try an post pics as soon as i can.
the receiver has MK406322 (made up of little dots), on the stock near the trigger guard has SL, theh underneath N (or IV?), then 74, then big upside down V, then a star, then a small crown? and M 52. the n a little further down what looks like another crown on top of 7K? the magazine has a boxed S. the "safety" has a B, the bolt head has a 0, and what looks like crossed swords, and maybe an F off to the side. the receiver has the same crossed swords opposite the "safety". on the muzzle end there is SM on the nailed on band. the front site has 045 FY, the muzzle has C.A.I. GEORGIA vt .303 ENGLAND. on the grip band below the safety is EA2576....whew...i think that's it for now.

I was a regular here a few years back and got very busy with other things, looking forward to having the time to enjoy reading up on all the past post and see just what I have been missing. I live deep in the backwoods of East Texas just a few miles from where I grew up as a boy. My people came to Texas in the 1820's from Mississippi, Georgia & Tennesee. Our familly made there living off the land. We hunted wild hogs, deer, rabbits, squirrel & whatever was available. If the economy goes south like it looks like it may, I will just pick up where I left off as a boy. We still have lots of all kinds of wild life. About a week ago my wife and her dad were out checking on our cows when she saw a black panther stalking one of our newborn calves, when the cat spotted my wife in a moment it was gone. I am thinking of a way to trap it. Its not likly that it will let itself be seen again in daylight. My passion is M14 type rifles I have built a couple from USGI parts and LRB receivers, Lou is doing a great job as are the other M1A makers. What I like about Lou's M25 is the scope mount being a part of the receiver, its takes some weight off and make for an accurate rifle. I also have an Springfield Armory M25 White Feather which make a great brench rifle but its too heavy to hunt deer with unless you are in a deer stand with a good rest to shoot from. Not much more that I can say for now except for God Bless our Country and let,s all pray for it and our service men & women that keep us safe. We have a duty to leave a better America for our children and grand children than the America that we grew up in!

My name is Ross. I have been interested in Military weapons ever since John Wayne first flashed a 1911 semi-auto pistol in a war movie. I started by buying several battle rifles (about eight) about twenty years ago, then got diverted by life. I just got serious about the whole thing this year, and spent many, many dollars on some seriously fine weapons (rifles and pistols), and now have almost forty rifles and pistols in some very attractive displays in my library. Eventually I drifted into wanting sniper rifles-I know, expensive drift- and that's where I am now. I'm converting some '03-A3 to sniper clone configuration and some M1 Garands into "D" configuration. I also have mounts for the Enfield and the Mauser and have some scopes ready to mount and other scopes mounted on other rifles. With any luck I will be holding an M1C in my hot little hands by late July. (Pray for me!)
I'm a few years from retirement, and think that WWII weapons are the next big thing in the military collecting world. I'm thinking that my money spent now will double within the next ten years. Since my retirement fund just took a thirty percent hit, that would be a good thing. It would be nice to know what anyone reading thinks about this theory. Do I get more "bang for my buck" with this investment strategy? (pun fully intended)
I'm having fun doing this, although the more I acquire, the more I want. The more I learn, the more I realize just how little I know. I've enjoyed harvesting some of the collective wisdom here on the site. Thanks, Ross

I am not a collector but I do have a nice 1912 Ross .22 Cadet training rifle which I'll give to one of my grandsons next year for his 10th birthday. The original rear "peep" sight has been replaced with a sight made in Nova Scotia which is adjustable for range and wind and works well -- but I would like to obtain one of the original peep sight assemblies; iris, post and knurled bottom screw. Anyone have an idea where I might look?

I have always admired service weapons of all branches and have owned a few. I recently purchased a .303 and have been trying to track some facts.
The right side of the receiver is stamped lithgow smtle III 1919, the serial # Is A-29769 I know it was made in Australia and under the rear sight the barrel is stamped HV, I haven't been able to find out the meaning of stamp
2nd M C on the top flat of the reciever or the shield with AC over B and a star on top. all part have matching serial numbers however the stock is so rough i cant detect the sold out of action arrows, I would appreciate any help in this area of identification as well as other info concerning this rifle, the only other .303 i owned was passed down to me by my great uncle when i was 15 and it had peep sights. both rifles have proven extremly accurate and a dream to shoot.
Hey All,
Decided to check-in @ jouster and was pleasantly surprised. Even got my original handle back. Nic to be here

Greetings,
Jim here, former Canadian army type, I have broken service as I left to pursue the 'shining kit' the RCMP had! That lasted 8 years and I ended back in the army. Now living in the US, met a beautiful young girl from Alaska while I was posted to Fort Lewis WA. For some reason she believed my lies, and here we are! I just got her a Savage Lee Enfield Lend Lease No4 Mklll as one of her birthday presents! Sad.. I know. But she loves it. Interested in Lee Enfields, M1, M-14s, FN's, Mausers, pretty much anything service rifle.
Cheers!
Oh! And does anyone know much about importation of weapons from Canada to the US? Most of my gear is still up there.

I've been collecting for around 15 years now. January 2007 my home was burglarized and my safe was pried and ripped out of the floor complete with 26 guns. AR's, AK's, M1a, pistols, carbines, etc. The vermin didn't find my auxilliary carbine depot, however, so I still have 9 WWII carbines, as well as a few pistols that I had secreted arount the house.
Anyway, much as I HATE TO DO IT, times are extremely tough these days in my construction business and I must get rid of a few pieces.

Optimist. I am a gunsmith, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. At present, I work on whatever walks in the door, but my first love is in taking a bubba'ed rifle and making something useful out of it. Bad bores? I rebarrel. Mostly I build working guns, tools, not works of art. If you are into fine checkering and blued finishes that reflect every gleam of sun that filters its way into the forest, well, I know a gunsmith or two who will cater to you.
If you want to shoot one raggedy hole, or build a working rifle to walk the woods with, I'm your huckleberry. And, you might find me to be just a bit opinionated, particularly when it comes to combat tupperware....

Greetings, all.
It would seem I've found a new home, or at least a place to park my butt for a while - any site that features an M1 Garand on its banner has got my attention 'right real quick' ! :-)
I'm an FFL holder, budding gunsmith, son of another FFL who is also a military collector, and a former employee of CIA - Century International Arms. Five years worth, so I know I'm gonna get a little grief about that...
I can also be found on The FALFiles, The Firing Line, and related forums; I have and shoot a Czech Vz 52, L1A1 (built myself), Romanian SKS, assorted .223-cal. pieces, some hand-cannons and shotguns.

New here. Just acquired a #4 Mk.1 Long Branch (43), and a #4 Mk.2 FAZ (49). Have been bench rest shooting for 35+ years trying to put 5 bullets into one hole, as well as various other pistol, and rifle stuff. Have not really been into old military rifles until I got these 2. I have since put my other stuff aside for a while and been studying these. The history is facinating. I'm having a ball. A lot to learn. Thanks, Bob

Hi everyone !
My name is Patrick and I'm from from good old germany so please excuse me if my english might not be too good.
I'm highly intersted in WWII rifles (especially Carbines like the Gewehr 43 or the Garand) but I don't have much experience because firearms are pretty much completely prohibited in my country.
Its pretty hard to find guys like you over here in Germany which is why I hope to find some help in here.
This already leads me to my first problem:
It's really difficult to own a rifle (and especially one from the 2nd WW) in Germany. Is there anybody who might have an idea how I could own an old rifle to practice on and to understand how such a rifle works?
I would be happy about just any rifle, even broken ones or such ones that are not abled to fire rounds anymore.
If there is anybody with an idea or someone else from Germany who might be abled to help me please post it to my e-mail account "Corpsegrinder1712@gmx.de"
Thanks for reading and have an nice weekend !

Hi everyone. I've been reloading and shooting for many years, my passing fancies including Swedish, German, Italian, Jap, English and American rifles. I've been a secret admirer of the Lebel and Bertier rifles and posesser of a Mdle 1916 carbine for a year or so. I don't consider myself an expert, just a serious hobbist. Hello Men,
I'm a sniper instructor starting in VietNam and subsequent law enforcement
training. My hobby is testing and evaluating historic military sniper rifles.
My group was in on the 'Kennedy test' to evaluate whether or not the
Italian Carcano was capable of the 'mission'. For those of you who are
interested in this sort of thing, indeed, it was quite capable of 'claims'
at that distance of 60 meters. at the 15 mile per hour target traverse.
Even with the bubba'd cheap *** scope set up. It could also be done with Iron sights alone , even at 'marksman' level. (we got bored in the
practice session because we almost never missed the dummy under
these circumstances.)
So, if you're a conspiracy buff, and you believed
someone else was primary at the repository--perhaps a sniper grade expert,
then it would have been no problem for him to get off the required count.
There would have been no need for a tersiary grassy knoll hitter.
...if they had one, it would only be the exclamation mark on the sentence...
Anyway, if you guys have any particular accuracy or sniper questions
regarding old equipment or new stuff, feel free to email me and I'll try to
put you on target based on over 45 years in the biz.
Also, I'm looking to purchase some good 6.5 carcano ammo, and scope
mounts, pads, and a decent #32 Enfield Scope. R.E.L. prefered.
Thanks, God bless our Freedom.
Hi all:
I used to browse and occassionally post but have been absent for a year or so. Glad to be back - I'm more of a target shooter than collector and my #1 match rifle is a great M1 built by Roland Beaver.

Forty eight years ago this summer Dad and I walked through the front door of Sears in Waco. There were two 55 gallon drums with the tops cut out and guns sticking out higher than my 10 year old head and a sign that read "Choice $10." Dad picked one out and kept us in venison with it for years. I finally got to shoot that "old army" gun when I turned 14 and that's was when I found out it was chambered in .303 British. Another 4 or 5 years later I found out it was an Enfield rifle from WWII.
I've got a lot of nice guns but none nearer or dearer. It started my love affair with all things that go bang! I opened my gun store in 2005 and have learned a lot more aobut milsurp since then. I really like the history that comes alive when I hold one and sight down the barrel.

Don't buy anything without someone who knows something about what you want to buy.
If you already have some weapons you SHOULD PROBLABLY stock up on any ammo in the calibers you need because in my part of the world some calibers are very scarce. (45acp,9mm especially)

Hello - this is John, or JKirk208, live near Austin, Texas, presently in lovely Taji, Iraq with the U.S. Army. I got hooked permanently in 1994 when the person running my country decided we needed an assault weapons ban. I haven't looked back since. If it is U.S., military from 1890 forward I probably have several, plus a smattering of British, Russian and Swede. Right now I carry the black rifle which we have only shot while conducting required annual qualification. If you have any questions about what is in use here, please ask away. I will be home in about two months and can't wait to go place .30 holes in paper at long distances.
I note that this is a Canadian sponsored board and wish to say hello to my friends and co-workers in TO. I miss my travels there! I swear I have blood kin somewhere in Canada!

Good evening all. I have just discovered your wonderful site. I was actually searching for information about 1917 Enfield rifles. A friend of mine sold me one earlier this week. I wrapped it up as a birthday gift for my son and presented it to him this last Saturday. My son and I enjoy going to gun shows to see old surplus rifles together because the wife and daughter don't find these activities to be very interesting. It seems most of the firearms in my collection are military. I mostly enjoy purchasing firearms that are broken, or missing parts. At one time there was an abundance of these sorts in my area. To me, it's almost as much fun making the missing parts as it is to shoot the repaired guns. I'm a machinist by trade, and have the necessary equipment to the repairs, and fabrication. I like to occasionally make parts for other people that are having trouble getting particular parts or want to have a part made that they designed themselves. One other thing I enjoy doing is teaching about weapons at my reserve center. I am an 18 year veteran of the Navy. People really enjoy seeing the older weapons that I bring with me to lecture with. I mostly instruct new service members on M-16 familiarization, and sometimes crew served weapons. I hauled my 1919 A-4 with me one time and had my son set it up to demonstrate how challenging it could be if they were 13 years old. The funny thing is, the average person doesn't much interest in older weapons but when they see one in person they usually are very interested. I try to do my part to put collecting firearms in a positive light. I would like to believe that my enthusiasm has introduced several of my friends into shooting, and collecting firearms as a hobby. Well, that's a little about me. I'm interested in learning about you all. Let's get started..

Hello All,
First an admission: I never intended to get into military firearms. There I said it!
Then my step daughter came on hard times and needed some money so I bought her Winchester made model 1917. The story is that her grandfather bought it "new" in 1940 for $17.00 mail order. The rifle is really very nice but it has so many numbers and markings in so many places that I wonder if I'll ever figure out what it's real history is. The serial number is 105277, the barrel top behind the front sight is stamped with a large "W", a flaming bomb and "2-17", it has an OD canvas rifle sleeve, there's a bunch of cleaning stuff in the butt stock behind the trap door and it sports a vintage leather strap. It's parkerized. I'm wondering if it's original, re-manufactured or what. All those darn markings are pretty confusing. I think I read somewhere that when made all these rifles had a polished blued finish. Is that true?
Any preliminary ideas from the experts?
Thanks in advance, Dave

Dear Vats,
It looks like a sporterised P14 if .303, or a P17 if .3006. either made by Winchester, Eddystone or Remington made for the British Army circa 1917.
The top furniniture has been removed, if the bore is good and you can get 2 inch groups at 100yds it would be worth getting it back to the original.

Howdy from South Texas on the gulf coast,
I'm a lover of the Springfield 30A3. Have been looking for a long time for an
accurate barrel for mine.
Back in the 50s, Dad my brother and I each bought and received 2 from NRA when they made them available thru their surplus program. (Along with 1911s and the Carbine) Took advantage of all of them.
Out of the 6 03s, I got one that was proof fired only. Only thing is, it is not
an accurate 03. I reload and have tried all kinds of different powders and
bullets. The problem is, there is 3/8" of free bore. Way too much for any
kind of accuracy. Any ideas? Have a gunsmith friend that has suggested having it bored and sweat in a liner. I what an origional accurate barrel.

Hello to all, I've visited here for a couple of months and have gotten a lot of info that has been helpful to me concerning my Jungle Carbine. I bought it in the early '50s from a Sears store in Nashville, Tn. They had a special sale going on with a lot of milsurp Enfields in it for some reason. I paid the princely sum of $35.00:yikes: for it, if I had only known.......Sears eventually stopped selling any firearms IIRC and look what happened to them! I'm in the middle of a move from Fl. to Co. so no pics at this time. Looking forward to future on this forum. PM

I currently shoot CMP Springfield and Garand and am looking forward to Carbine and Vintage Military.
I have just come into possession of the bits and pieces of a Greek Mannlicher 6.5x54 Y1903 that was in the process of being sporterized. The bolt handle has been butter knifed and bent, an extra thumb safety is available to install, and a rough Monte Carlo stock is available for finishing. The iron sight mounts also seem to have been moved. I have not measured but the mounts look like 3/8" dovetail both front and rear. I can make pictures available soon. The only thing(s) that seem to be missing for finishing this project are some new iron sights. I would like to make a go of getting the rifle into shooting order but need a little help in finding sights as well as other recommendations.
Thanks all

Hello all,
Just found this interesting site earlier in the week. Looks to have a lot of great info! I've been dabbling in firearms for quite awhile, but have been caught up in milsurps for the last ten years or so. I'm interested in all milsurps, but mainly Imperial German items. Looking forward to spending some quality time here.
Best regards, Don

Hello,
Enjoy the forum thought I'd join. I've been collecting milsurps for a year or two now. I like the history. I've managed to find a couple of Mosin Nagants a real nice Gew 98, an SKS and a Hakim. I reload for all except the SKS. I'm sure I'll have many more soon. Thanks for all the info on this site.

Milsurp Collector for 30 years. My first rifle was a sporterized KRAG. I like the early bolt action like the GEW 88, and I also have a Mauser 1874, plus numerous Model 93's and 98 Mauser's in addition, I am a CMP customer and C&R licensee and have collected M-1 carbines, M-1 Garands and 1903 Springfield. I also build Mauser sporters on actions or barrelled actions I can come across without cutting a rifle up. I go by the name Tackleberry on some other forums.

I hope this is the correct place for this. I am a single-shot rifle fan. I have not "collected" any, but have managed to accumulate a few. :)
I live between Houston and Galveston, Tx. And don't really enjoy the heat and humidity any more.
My main thing now is trying to bring "basket case" actions back from the dead, to the point that they can be used for at least mild cast bullet loads. Again these are old single shot falling, pivoting block type rifles.
Enough. Ballard

Hi Everyone, Maybe someone can help me with an accuracy problem with my new Sig Saur P 220 SAO Match 45ACP. It shoots 4 to 5 inch groups at 20 yards benchrested with CCI, Winchester NT and Federal NT ammunition. My gunsmith reciently evened out the crown of the muzzel and there was no change. I have put about 500 rounds of FMJ though it with the hope of breaking it in to no avail. The barrel is mirror clean. You advice would be most appreciated. Thanks

New to the forums, but not entirely to CSP. Sharyl Smith W3VET (a 25xx in RVN) posted links to the M16 story, which confirmed what I'd felt about the Mouse Gun since we first saw it at the U of Utah in '67. USMC Jan '64..Aug '72, mostly air wing (6236 Phantom Fire Control, secondary 8981 MARS Radio); 1st MAW Iwakuni and DaNang, NESEP (dropped after two years), MCAS Beaufort, then 1st MARDIV DaNang, MAG-12 Chu Lai, back to DaNang (all MARS that tour), El Toro, and out. WA6DZS from 29 Palms and El Toro. 238 with the M-14 at Camp Matthews, still got the miner's lamp. Picked up a Springfield 1903A3 at K-Mart while in Salt Lake.

Hi guys and gals. After a 20 year hiatus, I re-discovered the Garand. The prices certainly have gone up in the last two decades-my last Garand was a mint under $200 DCM gun. I just bought a 1944 Springfield and I'm looking for another already. I'm already having some issues, so if you don't mind I'm going to pick your brains. I'll post some pics. Stu

I'm a new member. My interest was sparked when my grandfather showed me his DWM Bulgarian Luger when I was 12. Later, I bought an m91 Mosin. Then a Turkish Mauser, and a Russian SKS. Recently, I started messing around with Garands. I gave up on a Drill rifle and purchased another Garand to replace it. I love my Garand. I also have an AR, but it really isn't a milsurp.

Hi I am a new member that has always been interested in all things military.
Currently I am in to collecting old British army rifles and seeing how they compare.
I have some Sniders / Martini Henry's and recently aquired a couple of winchester P14's to go with my .303 Enfields.
I am particularly interested in which Regiments the P14 was issued to in the First world War. I hear a lot about them being re-issued to the Home Guard in the second World War but if over a million were made surely they were not just held in reserve during the 1914/1918 conflict- yet all the regiments I research were using the Enfield.
Best wishes Warren ( keltic0_1)

Hi all-
I'm a new member from Texas. I am an avid shooter of sporting clays, handguns and rifles.
Many years ago (50 to be exact) when I was in the Army I purchased a Springfield 1903 A3 from a gunstore in Alexandria VA. In my youth and being somewhat dumb I "sportarized" it by chopping up a perfectly good original stock. Recently I came upon a complete stock with all the fittings for the rifle and put it back into its proper shape.
I joined this group to learn more about the rifle and perhaps begin collecting additional mil surp rifles. I am sure I will be asking for help and judging from the folks on these forums I am hopeful that you will suffer my questions.

I currently took out one of my First guns that was purchased by my dad for me at the winchester rifle club when I was a sub-junior member in '64.
These rifles came from "across the street" the factory, and were model 75's, 22cal, parkerized, lyman parkerized peeps. No military markings other thanstamped #'s in three locations on stock> 10 is marked under foregrip and under pistol grip, letters LK on left side of stock.
I believe this was purchased in "64-65 as overstocked military trainer. I believed we paid 75.00 for her,

Need a bit of advice urgently.
I have a 1872 303 Martini Enfield Rifle.
to load the rifle the under lever is depressed, which drops the breechblock.
I have someone who is interested in buying this rifle from me but I have no idea on the value. Can someone please give me a suggestion on what sort of figure I can put forward to the buyer?

Hi folks, another newbie joins your ranks, I'm rather envious that you are able to use the Lee Enfields as they were intended, over here we can only own deactivated ones or blank firing models under the auspieces of a reenacting group...pathetic isn't it.
I own a No4 mk1 blank firing savage 1943
No4 mk1 skeleton
No2 mk1 .38 tankers revolver
Mk2 blankfiring demilitarised sten
Mk2 deactivated Inglis 1944 Bren
Now on the look out for a decent No1 Mk3 smle
I also have all the reenacting kit and comply with our stone age laws.
Looking forward to some interesting discussions.

Greetings everyone. I’m a refugee from the old 03 Forum, and it has taken me this long to find you. My name is Marshall, and I grew up in rural Pennsylvania at a time when nobody thought much about guns; virtually everybody had them and used them like any other tool. Milsurps were everywhere, bring-backs from Europe and the Pacific. My family had a number of milsurps, the most interesting of which was a 30-40 Krag with a taped together stock and a German sniper scope. Today we would think of it as a Bubbaized collectable, but then it was meat on the table. When I was 10, I got a German Mauser, and, with the exception of a couple of time-outs for school and kids, I’ve been shooting and collecting ever since.
My collecting interests are military rifles of the major belligerents of World War II and military rifles of the U.S. from around 1900 up. Of course, those guns get very lonely without authentic slings, bayonets, helmets, and other gear. And since I try to shoot everything I own, they all need lots of ammo. And then there are those WWI guns that might have been used in WWII.... Oh, and the pistols…. And, of course, some of the modern, non-military guns are just sooo cool..... But you’re all familiar with the disease and its progression.
I’m looking forward to participating, although I tend to be more of a lurker than a poster (which isn’t necessarily bad, because you can see I get wordy). But I promise to weigh in from time-to-time, and I will post some photos as soon as I figure out how to take decent ones.

New member that knows very little about computers and only a little more about the military arms of interest. I've owned/collected U.S. WWI & WWII weapons for quite a while and only recently have acquired a number of Allied and Axis weapons. I've shot a few of them, enjoying every minute, and plan to do some more. I have a primary interest in the basic most common issued weapons to infantry troops. I'm looking forward to a rewarding assoicatin with this group. And have an initial question: I recently acquired a "Savage" Enfield that has a feature that I can't seem to find any information on. Attached to the muzzle band is a short rod which points forward but does not interfere with a bayonet or extend beyond the muzzle. It pivots slightly but only a couple of degrees. I've been told that was a stacking rod but I havn't seen any confirmation of this. Also I was wondering what material Savage/Stevens used for butt plates. Was it brass, steel or some other material. I would appreciate any info about these two features. Thank you.

Hi all, new old guy here! I have a 30-40 Krag and I need to know what it is for sure. Is it a carbine or rifle? The holes in the barrel (factory) or a after thought? I can't read the date very well it look's to be 1896 or 1898. The serial number start with a 95XXX and I cant seem to find it listed anywhere. The peep sight original or not? I know the butt pad has been installed my dad had this done back in the late 50's cause it hurt his shoulder when he shot it (whimp)! It was my great grand dads and has been in the family for a long time and as far as my dad and I know it's never been altered............but don't know for sure. I my opinion it is in very good condition and shoots like a dream and I want to continue to hunt with it, and was curious when would be the largest game to use it with. One last thing what would it be worth for insurance value? I will attched photos for viewing. Thank for anyones help!

Hello all.
I have been a long time collector of original medieval military items such as armour and weapons but in the last few years I have been branching out into more modern things to have a more complete view of how arms and armour has evolved over the centuries. My interest is still in armour (helmets) and weapons (rifles) though. I am particularly interested in WWII rifles. I presently have a 1944 Kar 98k, a 1943 Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk.1, and two Mosin Nagant 91/30s (a 1931 Izhevsh Hex and a 1938 Tula Round). I also have a Springfield M1 Garand and an Inland M1 Carbine on order.
Leave a message and introduce yourself to everyone !
Hi Guys im into the old milsurp firearms as issued to my father & his to keep themselves alive, & still find the standard of engineering remarkable for its time & well worth the effort to restore for future generations to contemplate & respect! look forward to chatting with you all. Wilf

I'm just a long-time, gun-loving & shooting senior citizen who was introduced to your site from a gun-club friend. High school military academy cadet 1953-57 ... Army vet 1960-63. Although I've "graduated" to firearms like the .308 Rem-700P & .45 acp Sig P220, I will continue to own & shoot my venerable M-1911 & M-1 Garand until my dying day.

Hello to all;
New member and trying to figure out how to use the site! Computer
skills are very basic, but trying to improve. I am interested in information
on Remington 1903-A3 - does anyone have a serial number list, or where I
can find info on the rifle. Also, same for an M-1 Carbine.
Thanks

New member here, but I was a member of the old M1/M14 forum that the Culver's managed. Been away for a while and wandered back to find everything had changed. I'm also a member of AR15.com under the same name and have been shooting/collecting for over 30 years. Being a retired jarhead and all, you could figure I had an interest in firearms. Glad to be back.

Hello,
New member based in Reno, Nevada, am British (they let anyone in the US these days), interested in Lee Enfields (mainly because of my interest in WWII), one day would like to be the proud owner of a Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 or 1* in as close to WWII specification/condition as possible, fine if it is FTR (i.e. not buggered up for sport sporting) , so I need as much help as I can get!
This is an excellent forum, and I have enjoyed the expertise of the contibutors, now all I need is a simplified buying guide and a range of acceptable prices....my quest begins....

Hello everyone.
As my name implies, I like Buntlines. They are fun to shoot and get me a little closer to the target. I also like old military guns. I have a 1873 trapdoor, 30/40 Krag, Garand M1, 30 carbine, 1928 Spanish Mauser, and Model#1 MKIII Enfield.
I also have several lever action rifles.
I recently bought a hot bluing outfit and enjoy refinishing older guns that need a facelift.
I'm here because I got a lot of valuable info on why my Enfield was keyholing.
Problem solved. Thanks to all.
Hope to get more involved with time.

Just popped in to say Hi
I inherited my late fathers Winchester P14 a couple of years ago, and a PERISCPIC PRISM SCOPE. The mount on the scope is stamped 01610, this number is also on the leather case. My fathers wish, was to have the mount made for the rifle, and to use the scope on his P14. So I'm off to see the gunmaker at the Royal Armouries Museum Leeds UK.

Hello members, looks like lots of great information available here! Glad to find
this Site.
I have had a lifelong affection of firearms, hunting, the great outdoors! I
became interested in Military rifles as a teenager, my first being a Low Ser.#
03 Springfield, didn't know the low #s were un-safe to fire! Also had a 6.5
Carcano, never thought of that rifle being accurate enough to be a sniper's
choice! I now have high # 03s, several Garands, M1 Carbines, that I have
gotten through the CMP. I have started putting together AR-15s from parts,
about a year ago, little did I realize at the time how hard parts would become,
or I would have invested more in barrels and bolts!

Hi all,
I got into milsurps a few years ago because I love the history associated with old firearms, plus a patriotic love for our country and the tangible items from our past.
I now have 3 M1's from CMP (1 SA and 2 HRA's), a Remington 1903-A3, Inland M1 Carbine, and 2 Mossberg M44 US .22's. Oh, and a 1891 Argentine Mauser I inherited. I am into reloading, and love shooting all my milsurps.
Hope I can learn lots here!

I've been around firearms all my 60-plus years. I own a few firearms of all types, and amongh them is a military surplus rifle. I'm the proud owner of an Eddystone-manufacture Model 1917 .30-06 Enfield that was one of the several surplus rifles that my dad acquired over his years. We never had over one of anything, so that kept Dad from being a collector of a certain type, but his war surplus firearms included a Springfield .45-70 Trapdoor, a Remington-Lee Model 1892 .45-70 bolt action, an Enfield Mark 4 .303, a Carcano 6.5 mm rifle (the rifle version of the carbine that allegedly killed President Kennedy in 1963) and the previously-mentioned Enfield Model 1917. My brother inherited every one of these but the Model 1917, but there's no bad feelings, because I inherited Dad's Model 1911 .45 Auto (also surplus) and a few other rifles that he'd managed to hold onto over the years.
My Enfield does kinda leave a "bad taste" in my mouth, because of the way in which Dad acquired it: when I was about 11 or 12, Dad came home a little later than usual from work with a long something-or-other wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string. It was the Mdel 1917 that I now own. That's the good news - the bad news is that when Mom asked him HOW MUCH OF OUR MONEY DID YOU SPEND ON IT? Dad replied something to the effect of, "it didn't cost a penny - I made an even swap with a gun that needed repair." That "gun that needed repair" was his First Generation Colt SAA .45 Cal with a 5 1/2 inch barrel. It had issues with the full-cock notch in the hammer, causing it to develop a "hair trigger." As much as I love the Enfield, there isn't a firearm out there that I love more than the Colt SAA! I'd be the owner of that fine revolver and if nothing else, I'd have something worth a couple thousand dollars instead of a couple hundred dollars! That's life.
Enuff about that!
Thanks to ANYONE who's read this far!

It's me, thunderbunny. Got started into historical stuff at about age 10 by auntie who ran the museum/historical society. Also had an art teacher that used to bring civil and rev. war arms for display to school to enlighten the children to their heritage. He was a very knowledgeble fellow. Used to carry .22 open to school on the bus for rifle team practice . Gun crank and custodian of many types of artifacts since. Presently living in fear of the bilderberg group , the new world order, emperor obama and those 800 FEMA camps with the big gas tanks and lines. One of the russian troops in the andirondacks recently told a girl in a sandwich shop in rome N.Y. , you people don't know what your in for! Keep um locked and loaded, THUNDERBUNNY.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone on the forum.
I've grew up around guns all my life - I remembered the first time my father bought his Marlin 60 for squirrels. I would tag along w/ him in the woods and knew that I wanted to learn everything - that was almost 20 years ago.
I like guns: old, new, one of a kind, mass produced, toy, everything gun related. Heck, I even bought a shotgun butane lighter the other day just because it looks like a miniture version of my Remington 870.
I've always wanted my collection to include a 1911, a M1 Garand, a M1 Carbine, a .38 or .357 revolver (similar to the Victory models) and a plain jane AR15 (M16 clone). My goal is to collect all the guns that my grandfather used during the Secret War in Laos.I've finally completed my mini collection with the recent purchase of an M1 Underwood Carbine.
I'm proud, and at times embarrassed, because I'm known as "THE GUY WITH ALL THE TOYS." Eventhough I'm only 25, when someone I know needs a gun or has a question about guns, they seek me out. I may not know the answers, but I always find it. And I plan to gain a lot of knowledge here too.

Hello fellow military surplus nuts  I'm a U.S. Army veteran and have always loved military rifles. I am currently working on a new project. It is a Winchester M1200 that will become a trench gun. I'm also working on an M16A1 clone (retro) AR to build for my ten year old son. Of course I have an M1 Garand! It's an H&R service grade purchased through the CMP south store.

Hello everyone! BT reporting for duty. 10 years collecting and shooting C&R rifles, mostly mausers, lots of swedes. Also collect a lot of vintage german scopes and mounts. Saw some threads doing Google search, thought I would join the fun
Hi everyone, I have been collecting for a few years now and have a modest collection. I tend to read and glean information more than I post. But ask me a question and I will do my best to answer. I joined to further my knowledge and possibly my collection. So bear with me if I tend to be ignorant in certain areas. My thank you and best regards. Dave.

Am researching and hoping to acquire a Pattern 1914 (W)(T). Have found milsurps.com to be invaluable in my initial research and very much appreciate the many unique postings made.

Hi guys -
I'm retired Air Force and finally retired from aerospace engineering after another 20+ years, so I should have time to devote to this hobby! I've got three M1 Garands, an M1 Carbine, and a 1903 Springfield. I'm not an expert r.e. any of them, but I always like to learn new things about all of them.

New here. Love to shoot old military rifles. Military Silhouette and Service Rifle matches are my current favorites for competition. For me it has been when you had the eyes you did not have the time to shoot and now with time to shoot I don't have young eyes anymore. The fun is figuring out how to do it without altering anything.

Hello all,
Yes I am a newby...at least to this forum...if not to the rest of the world. I must admit that I would not have registered if the forum had not gone private. I have read the threads for a long time, and have enjoyed the voyeristic (is that a valid word?) comraderee we shared. I am reluctant to throw my name out in public due to the habit of tyrants in making opposition lists. Huummm...isn't the white house compiling one now on anti-socialized medicine? Oh well...if I must do this to continue reading the excellent posts contained herein, then I must. Carry on gentlemen, and I look forward to fully joining you.

Just a note of thanks for allowing me to join the Forum. I am a forth generation collector. My most recent purchase is an Ithaca 1911 A1 with an unusual serial number ending with "DC". Once I understnad how to use the forum, I will be asking for help in identifying its history.

Hello,
New member here.
I am from Ireland, County Tipperary, to be exact.
I have been shooting for a good few years. Mainly hunting rabbits, foxes and other vermin and pheasants and duck in season.
I am a member of a rifle range and have recently bought a .303 British, Long Branch, Lee Enfield, No. 4, Mk 1, built in 1941.
Classic rifle shooting here in Ireland is just getting popular due to us not having access to this kind of rifle because our firearms laws are/were somewhat restrictive.
I have had a look around this site and it is excellent. :super:

New member here, I have been lurking on the original jouster board for M1 Garand/ Enfield posts for a while. A lot of effort has gone into this new forum. I will be a while catching up on some of the posts!
Hello all. I am new here and looking forward to sharing some knowledge and some good chat. I just picked up my first milsurp gun, a P-17 made over by BSA into a sporter. Wicked old gun and accurate to boot ! ! ! :beerchug:
