View Full Version : BYF 44 98 Rifle with No Serial Number??

A friend showed me some photos of a beautiful BYF 44 rifle that has no serial number. I assume it is an RC rifle because it has an EP number on the bolt and other parts are mismatched, but neither the receiver or barrel has a serial number. The byf 44 mark, the swastika markings, and the waffenampts are very sharp which seems to discount any notion the numbers were scrubbed and neither the receiver or barrel show any signs of any metal having been removed.

Has anyone encountered any similar rifles? Was this common or is this an unusual item? Any value to a collector beyond a standard rifle? Thanks!

Hi Bert ... :)

A correct byf44 should be serial numbered....

Sounds like you have an East German post war refurb ...

Check the one shown in my personal Milsurps On-line Photo Gallery for some pics of one that's all correct and all matching.

Either click the link under my name to the left that says View Photos by: Badger, or go directly with this link.

By the way, are you sure that the swastikas haven't been "peaned"?

Thanks for the photos. That is a very nice looking rifle.

No, nothing on the rifle has been "peened". The markings that are present are very sharp. I don't have a photo hosting site so can't post photos here (I don't think I can anyway), but would be happy to send to you the photos I have. I just think it is an interesting piece.

Unnumbered 98ks are rare, but not unheard of and appearently exist from all the makers.
I have a ce 44 that is a totaly unnumbered rifle and it has all correctly/matching proofed parts to the rec. I also have a bcd 41 that is an RC. This one is a German rebarrel - .02 on bbl collar. The only ser nr on the bbl/rec is one on top of the bbl along with the RC X. The Germans missed 2 chances to put a ser nr on this one - at the factory and at the depot so the ruskies put a 2 diget one on it.
I have also heard of a ce 44, but haven't seen it.
I'd like to find an unnumbered bnz or ar.
