Afternoon all, P14 conversion

Finally tracked the "the jouster site down" have been looking for some old posts in the 1917 and the reloading but have gone, was in the process last year of converting a P14 to .260 rem or 6.5 x 55 (chuckindenver do u recall) well due to funds and after buying an Accuracy international AE .308, projects were shelved, Chuckindenver do you think the action will take the .338 ultra mag ? had a look in Bolt action rifles by F De Haas which states it could.Has anyone tried?

someone was asking me about it, some lads i know are intrested in the Fifty cal club , one wanted to buy a .338 lapua mag, i sugested going for the poormans .338, just wanted to know if the action would take it, was quite interested myself in fcsa thats why i had my eye on the boys anti tank rifle at newark yesterday, did you go? i put a thread on the SMLE forum with some of the prices.

Yes it went. A mate of mine bought it for a customer, hammer price was £2,400. I helped him carry it back to his car afterwards and I'm not surprised so many of them got left behind at Dunkirk. I certainly wouldn't fancy going for a swim with one!

do i think the P14 or 1917 action will handle a .338 ultra mag??heck yea.
the .338ultra puts out some big pressure, heck why not step it up and go with the ,375 ultra mag. or .375 H&H imp.
the 17 and 14 are soft but very strong, 3.5% nickle steel, i dont know of any other action with that..
only one id say is stronger??the 1903A3 made by Smith Corona, hard and tough, ask anyone who,s drilled a hole in one..

Got 2 P14 actions , one nearly finished and built as a .308 (been sported no wings etc), but the other no plans as yet,
looking at a thread in the gunsmithing for old milsurps , about building a P13, nice pic of Mick,s P14 converted to 7mm remington mag, very nice well worth a look,

In talking conversion, most folks tend to think of cartridge pressures in terms of "pounds per square inch" or "bars per square centimeter". So if a rifle now accepts a cartridge rated at 52,000 psi, it should have no problem with another cartridge rated at the same pressure level, even though the second cartridge has a larger diameter, right?

Well, no. When going from a smaller cartridge to a larger one, don't forget those square somethings. A cartridge with a .30-'06 base size has an internal base size of around 1/10 square inch. So a cartridge with 52k psi pushes against the bolt face with around 5200+ pounds. But as the cartridge base increases, the internal base size increases as well. What is 1/10 sq. in. in a .30-'06 could be about double that as the internal base area increases and the pressure against the bolt face could double, even though the "per square inch" internal pressure is the same, 52k psi.

Often wonder what happened to all the Remington Model 30's. Basicaly a factory sporterized M1917 using left over parts, made until 1940. There must have been one hell of a parts overrun in 1918.

They do turn up, but most are unrecognized I suspect. At some point in the 1930s they changed to cock on opening. The story of the series is well told in various places online.
