SIGHT ADJUSTMENTs

Has anybody got a way of fine tuning sights for elevation without permanent alterations on mosins and 98 K's. A min sight adjustment on these sights seems to be about 4 to 5 inches at 100 meters. THANKS.

If you're talking about "as issued" sights, you're SOL. Changes to elevation were made by changing the front blade. You would have to swap out the front sight.

Edited to add - Mojo sights are inexpensive, non-permanent alterations for either rifle. http://www.mojosights.com Study the sight. There are a number of options for you there.

That would be okay if he is good with tools and can get the adjustment right the first time. :lol:

Mojo sights are windage and elevation adjustable and do not involve any filing or permanent changes to the rifle. The sight is put in place of the original rear sight. The original rear sight is kept and put back on, if needed. Less fuss and downtime.

The real advantage to this system is that it is an aperture sight. Clearly superior to standard V or U notch sights common on many milsurps. :thup:

If none of the above suggestions work for you, here's what I did with my M27 that was shooting high: I cut off a section of that red tubing that comes with WD 40 cans, equal to the length of the blade, and super glued that on top of the blade. Easy to add/remove and no permanent damage to the post. I've also read of people using heat shrink tubing wrapped around the post.

I wanted to keep and use original sighting system. I have a extra front sight for my 91/30 and am going to try and alter this. I read somewhere on the net that if took the post out of the sight and replaced it with a taller one you could start filing it down until you get the elevation desired. I will give this method a try.

For my Mosin I just worked with the powder charge in my reloads till they dropped on the center of the target...:cool:

If you can get a spare rear sight leaf, install a No. 8 or No. 10 socket head set screw. This is a K31 sight, but I have also done it with Mausers:

The yellow mark is a filed "nick" with paint to use as a reference for repeatability.

The length is "tuned" so that the screw is just out of view when the sight is at minimum elevation:

On this one, there is sufficient range of elevation for 1000 yards, and I can make reliable adjustments of 1 MOA or less.

To remove/replace the original sight blade, I use one of these bar clamps with soft jaws to compress the rear sight spring while I drive the pin in or out:

If you are not willing to alter even a spare sight, you can cut shims that will fit underneath the rear sight slider. Brownell's sells shim stock in various thicknesses. The most useful sizes for this purpose are .003", .005" and .010", which are easily cut with sharp scissors. This one is cut to fit a K98k sight:

On a 91/30 type post sight, you can remove the sight and drive the post out by putting a punch through the hole in the top of the globe.

A new sight can be made from a brad nail and then rebuled, or if you want to get fancy you can exactly duplicate the original on a metal lathe, blue it, and then dress with a file for elevation (that's what I did on my shooter 91/30).

Brownells sells an extra high front sight with a Mauser dovetail.
