The rifle looks like a T-38 carbine which were used by cavalry and artillery men. He most likey is Artillery based on the wheels in the photo which probably belong to an artillery piece. The white Dove of peace certainly didn't fit these guys though, Ray

One thing we forget is that the Japnese and German soldeirs were young men that believed in their contries just like ours. Im not justifying what they did but we forget they were human beings. don in fl.

No they were not my friend, the were "troopers" of their Country the same as our boy's were. War, (if you haven't seen it,) is a very nasty and terrifying thing to experience, they did their duty, and so did our boy's!

Ok, Guns= war not Peace. Thats all I was saying. And I won't get into the diferences between our "boys" and their "boys" behavior while doing their "duty" during the war. Have we forgotten history already. Ray

Unfotunately their national policy was even more racist than the NAZI. They believed in the ultimate superiority of the Yamato Race.
It would be as if the KKK ran the entire United States.

Every nation Japane occupied and every prisoner they took was brutely treated, tortured and killed. Not so with any other allied nation. That is the difference. In the fighting, to win you have to fight fire with fire. Nice picture of Japanese soldier and rifle. riceone

I think the Japanese military went way beyond duty with the atrocities they committed.

Has anyone read "The Rape of Nanking"? This book should be required reading in high school history classes.

There was a documentary on this incident some years back. The thing about it that stands out most in my memory was a elderly japanese veteran who'd been a military surgeon recounting how thousands of Japanese soldiers had been so horrified by their own actions and what they had witnessed that they went into a sort of withdrawal and starved themselves to death rather than live with the shame. That was kept a closely guarded secret at the time, the families of the suicides were told they had died in battle.

A US officer present at a prewar parade gound told of a Jap officer beheading a soldier who'd missed a button on his tunic. They didn't miss a beat, the jap soldier just stepped forwards and bowed, and the officer took off his head without a blink.

A couple of month back I saw a Japanese film about the hardships of their soldiers in the last months of the war.
The main character was pretty sympathetic until he killed two elderly civilians over a smal bag of salt. Earlier he had killed a dog and showed remorse, he showed no remorse at all when he killed the old couple.
