Good luck. All the reports seem pretty bad in the past.

    Exclamation Junk!

I looked at two a couple of days ago and mh53gunners assessment is an understatement! They are horrible

My estimate for these M1s is about $399.00 if you get to hand pick it, out the door.

What's funny is that my last two Garands were picked off the Field Grade rack at the CMPicon South Store for $495.. Both were during different visits, and both were HRA, had wood that was fair, and both were less than 2 on TE, and just over zero on ME.. Basically, other than the stocks being a little rough, they gauged better than Service Grade rifles in the next rack..

I know... I know.. One can't just drive to the South Store, or the North Store.. I was lucky and in both situations I had a service job only a couple hours from the Store and took a little time and drove over to see what I could have follow me home.. But, not all of us are next to a Big 5 Sporting Goods store, either..

My suggestion is to get paperwork into CMP and order a rifle or two.. You're guaranteed a fully inspected rifle that won't have import marks, and if there's even the slightest remote issue with the rifle, they'll address it..

My last HRA's rear sight was a little wobbly.. I emailed CMP and an armorer send out 2 rear sight covers the next day (for free) and told me to try them and let him know if there was any other issue.. Problem was solved in minutes, and the sight worked perfectly.. Again, this was a $495 Garandicon..

The rifle is almost all HRA, too... Just do it!!!

    BIG 5 IS SELLING GARANDS " MARKED DOWN " TO $ 599.00 "
And for $5 less (plus $29 next day air shipping) you can have a Service Grade CMP Garand, possibly with brand new wood!! All three of these rifles were mail ordered by me and picked out by CMP personnel, by the way.. No special treatment.. This is what you can expect if you just order a rifle from them.

My first CMP Service Grade Garand (SA)

My second CMP Service Grade Garand (HRA)

My third CMP Service Grade Garand (WRA, and OK, it was $200 more than the other two)

I got a SA Field grade, with acceptable wood, mw-1, te 2.5, and shot it today. This 16 shot group is at just over 60 yd. Not too bad for a $495.00 rifle, IMO.

Just for laughs, I drove over to Big 5 when they were having that sale. I didn't expect much and I my expectations were right on the nose. The battered example that I was shown had a greasy, beat-up stock that looked like it had been creosoted; handguards were cracked; the windage knob was written in Korean so we know where that one's been. The metal was well worn after a rebuild decades ago, and the bore looked like a sewer pipe. It had crud and hair in it, but even cleaned out it woulda been a mess; you could see through the muck a bit an inch or two into the bore and it was pretty grim. Then again, Big 5 has a policy of not allowing customers to clean a bore to see what it's really like (I've asked), and they don't clean bores before they place milsurps on sale.

Like someone else said, do yourself a favor and look into getting a $495 field grade from CMPicon. At least CMP has serviceability standards that they observe when they grade them out. I sent away for one about a month ago and it just came today, so the turnaround time on orders is fairly short right now. I was very happy with my 500 bucks worth; the parts alone are worth more than that. This one was a Greek return. I need another one of these like I need a hole in my head, but at that price I just can't resist buying more once in a while.

Oh, the rifle was a rebuilt late 1943 with an excellent 2-52 bore.

When GCAicon sorted those 19000 rifles at the South Store, they really did the mailorder guys around the country quite a service. Apparently rifles are coming out fairly fast right now. Those guys did a monumental task in short order that speeded the process up for the ordering public as well as store visitors

Over the years, I've bought a lot of parts for my CMP M1s. Except for the elevation pinions, barrels and stocks, they didn't cost much.
It never occured to me to just ASK the CMP for them. Thanks for the heads-up on the free parts.

I drove over to my Big 5 store yesterday. All of thier Garands are gone. They had 3-4 per store and none in the warehouse. The Manager said they had come from Korea and Century does expect to get more in soon. He said pending upon price Big 5 will be a big buyer of Garands from Century. Stand by for further developments.

DERF hit the nail on the head as far as the one I saw at my Big five.
