Okay, I'm partway into stripping my newly arrived Century Arms '43 Long Branch and I have a question: is there a good reason for my barrel to be painted green under the handguards? I don't mean oxidized, discolored, etc. It is PAINTED GREEN, I can see the brush strokes. WTF is this?

An anti-rust barrier for use in the tropics.

Thank you! I was taken aback, I've never seen anything like it on a surplus gun before.

In peace time prior to WWII the Enfield rifle was completely stripped and torn down for a yearly inspection. Due to war time combat conditions the Enfield was painted below the wood line and only torn down when required for maintenance.

And it’s NOT WTF it’s RTFM

“The painting will be accomplished at home and abroad”

England does not qualify as the tropics but they may still have put Quinine in their Gin at home. ;)

That, sirs, is really, really cool for some reason.

If it moves, salute it; if it doesn't, paint it green. ;)

The urban legend about saltpeter in military food and drink is a complete falsehood, but my wife sprinkles estrogen on my Corn Flakes every morning hoping I will talk to her more and spend less time in the gun forums.

They put bromide in the tea in Malaya to stop us getting a) horny and b) catching 'tropical' diseases from the locals.

It's just started to work!

First, you have an interesting name. I wonder how you'll feel about it after a few years here!
I'm a throwback on a lot of stuff, and I'll just tell you that stripping all the "stuff" off your rifle is history washing down the drain. Clean it, stop the rust, if any, and clean the stock with Murphy's Oil Soap, no water, and tee shirts. Oil with RLO or BLO, (monthly debates on this subject), and hand rub in. Sand paper does not exist in my gun room......
Enjoy your new Long Branch. It won't be alone long!
