I have an updated 1922 izhevsk dragoon. I put a light down the end of the barrel the other day and noticed that it has 2 sets of rifling, one is deep and the other is very shallow, just deep enough to be shiny. The barrel is not counter bored. Both are parallel.
Does anyone know what this second rifling is for?

Never heard from that. Only know that it has 4 grooves right twist?
You can never know enough. BTW if you´re a reloader, dont use Speer bullets in 123 grs. .311 it has only .309 in diameter and gives bad results. Try 174grs Sierra Matchking it was the best bullet for the MN.

Thanks! I've been using 180 grain yugo stuff that sportsmans guide says is non corrosive (I still clean it as if it is corrosive though) but I just got some 150 grain hornady SST bullets for reloading that are .311 and grafs.com claims work for 7.62x54r and .303 british, do you have any experience with these?

You may be seeing an optical illusion. The rifling is so deep on these it tends to create a reflection in there. I just checked the three I have and the shiniest bore had the most pronounced effect.

I reload the Hornady 155grs ( over here Interlock) in the Enfield with 41.4grs of N140 with really great success.
Hope the yugo stuff is PRVI? There is another called Igman and it is horrible stuff.

Aragorn243 is correct, and I am relieved to hear that someone else has the same optical illusion. I know my eyes are dodgy, but I also appear to see two sets of rifling in some rifles, and I was beginning to get worried!
Warriflefan, you will find that the illusionary second set of rifling will strengthen/fade as you move the light source and/or your head. In fact, it shows that you really have got mirror-bright rifling!

Hi! I agree with that. Firing such bullets I got very good results!

I slugged my barrel and it is .3125 so I have started using 185 gr lee C312-185-1R linotype gas checked bullets sized to .313 in winchester brass and it has tightened up my groups to about a third of what they were with mil surp 7.62.
