    Garand Safety

I am new to garands and have a safety question...

When the rifle is cocked and the safety engaged, pulling the trigger a few times will eventually move the safety forward and allow the trigger to fire.

Is this normal or a sign of safety wear?

not a normal sign of wear - can you post a picture - safety may be broken

safety traps the hammer and blocks the sear

check the spring that ejects the clip it also loads the safety

I have another question about the safety, I have a Greek return with what appears a lot of new parts. The safety is very stiff, hurts your finger to move it. Not at all like my other M1icon's. I have a couple of spare springs and another trigger group, have been thinking about taking the offending one apart to fix. What should I look for? And, what should I do? Any ideas appreciated. I do not want to end up with an unsafe rifle as Hondo seems to have.

Is there any lube on the safety pin in the trigger housing? Try working the safety back and forth a few time as well.

Sounds like it was greased years ago and the grease has hardened. Tear the trigger group totally down, clean all parts, check for rust, and use a good gun oil to lube it. The safety is the last thing to come out so check where it slides on the Trigger Housing. This is usually the problem because it hangs up there if its dirty. Don't grease it use oil. A little oil goes a long way.

I took my TG apart and another one as well, wanted to compare the spring and detent on the safety. The M1D spring was longer and had more bent "up: than the other and softer one. I altered the spring to match and put it back in, better but not 100%. The other item I noticed was that the safety pulled the hammer back when applied, so you are also fighting the hammer spring.

The spring that was longer and tighter came out of a CMPicon sold rifle and appeared as new and original but very likely done by the Greeks (supposed to be a Greek return).

Balance of the spring looked good and matched the other (I have 2 spares as well, new and orignial GI - supposedly), They were all pretty close.

I am going to keep at it but for now it is better, can be applied without pain and definately work! And, will not come off on their own!
