Interesting 1942 Springfield..Blue Sky..

I know..it is a Blue Sky. Springfield SN#996813 makes it 1942. Barrel is aN LMR 11-53, Op rod is NM 7790772 RA, bolt is dark in color D28287-12SA W10-B, FCG is D28290 WRA, hammer is C46008 SA, safety is SA-11, right front leg is EP'd BA 3-66 with a black grease pencil scrawl over the Benicia Arsenal markings. The walnut stock has no cartouches but white painted rack numbers have been scraped away. Sling swivels, FCG and other metal all seem to have a similar park finish. The bore and crown are in excellent condition. Of course the BLUE SKY ARLINGTON VA is stamped on left side of the barrel. I got it mainly as a shooter and paid $450 for it. Will post pics later.

I guess I was totally wrong about the BA as Benicia Arsenal..the arsenal was de-activated a couple of years prior to 1966.M1 Garand Re-arsenal code

Typical Blue Sky from Korea, most of them looked like that when they came in. Is that a Korean character on the receiver leg? That would be uncommon. IIRC they were all rebuilt by Daewoo.

I thought that the BA 4 3-66 was pretty interesting..I had not seen a Blue Sky marked in this fashion before. Some info stated that the MAP provided Garands to Korea in the late 60's and early 70's. So this example is 1942 receiver with an 11-53 replacement barrel, re-arsenalled at Anniston 3-66, sent to Korea sometime in the late 60's or early 70's, and re-built again by Daewoo.

The TE was measured with a Brownells gauge..2.5. Using a vintage 1957 Taiwanese corrosive round this is the seat of the pants ME test. I need a Stoneaxe gauge![/IMG]

I have a June 41 (275,XXX) SA, that has a very similar finish and grease pencil marking on the right reciever leg also. The barrel however has no markings on it at all and I believe is an aftermarket. The bolt is also a D28287-12SA. And to make it a little more odd it has a D-35449-SA gas cylinder and an "0" marked ejector clip. After reading your post I'm thinking this was another repatrioted Blue Sky as well.

I would think there are more than a few former Blue Sky M1 Garands out there..once that marked barrel is replaced those who are newbies..like myself, would never know. How does that unmarked barrel look or spec out?

The Barrel looks great no pitting or anything like that, I don't have a set of gauges but the muzzle fits a rounds very snugly also. My dad got this rifle from a friend of the family maybe 15 years ago and I bought it from him. We shot off the shelf .30-06 Springfield all of that time never knowing that it wasn't a good idea. I'm still wrestling over attempting a restoration or leaving it as is for a shooter.
