Questions about single shot adapters

I have a modified garand clip that allows loading a single shot. This is used in Garand slow fire matches. The question is, does it require removing the trigger assembly to remove it? I have not been able to remove it otherwise.

I also have a device sold by Brownells which provides the same function. It ejects when the clip latch is pressed. However, this device requires pressing down on the single round while withdrawing the OP rod slightly, then releasing while still holding the round down. Nasty process, worse than loading a full clip.

Given the choice of the two devices, I find the former much easier to use. However, it requires removing the trigger assembly to remove the clip. That is supposed to negatively affect stock fit over time, and it would be done twice in each match to say nothing about the number of times during practice.

If I remember correctly, each of these items are legal for the CMP Garand match. Neither is an "as issued" part. Nor are aftermarket match barrels.

There is a modification to the OP Rod Catch assembly which performs a similar function to the previously mentioned two devices. This modified OP Rod Catch makes the M1 function like the M-14 in that on the last round the bolt is locked open, and the clip may be ejected by pressing the clip latch. I've been told that this modification is not allowed in CMP Garand matches.

Why? It provides no performance advantage. I have one of these devices, and it is a pleasure to use. It saves wear and tear on the stock, and on my 67 year old fingers. Time for a rule change.

Does not seem correct that you would have to remove the trigger assembly to remove the clip.

My SLED (bought from Scott Duff website) has a leg cut out on the left side the catches under the left rail of the receiver. In order to remove it I use a brass Kleanbore scraper/brush tool to just catch the leg and pull it back from under the receiver. It than pops right up and out by follower pressure. The brass does not mar anything and this is really easy to manipulate. The brush end of the Kleanbore gizmo is good for applying plastilube.

I never tried the clip latch with this I wonder if the clip latch would hit the cut out leg and do the same thing.

I have a single shot adapter, can't remember where I got it - Fulton Armory maybe? - any way I don't have to remove the trigger group. When you install it there is a little tab on the clip (left side when looking down into the receiver) that catches on the receiver itself. When I want to remove it I put a small screw driver in there and pry the tab a touch and it pops right out.

I use the "Sled" from Fulton, and the tip of a bullet works fine to pop it out. The gadget that enables the Garand to operate like an M14 is the Holbrook device. It works great but as you say is illegal in JCG matches.

I use a SLED in CMP matches and I also have a two round clip for the rapid strings. I have not quite found a way to not get out of position to put in a round, and the follower can wear out your thumb so I have a cloth bandage on my thumb during matches

To remove the SLED I use the screwdriver blade on my Swiss Army knife. Just slip it under the tab on the left side of the "clip" and a with a slight twist it pops right out. I would not try this but when I first got it, I put it in upside down (the cut down end needs to be up and the tab will face up also) and I had to disassemble the rifle to get it out.

I just checked and the SLED at Fulton Armory is only 11.95 plus shipping. I value my fingers more than that small amount! (The idea of attempting to use a hacksaw on a small metal clip sounds like a good way to cut up some skin!) The sled works great and I have used it about 12 or 13 times over the last couple of years of JCG matches. The above comments about using a screw driver to remove are spot one, everyone I see at the line has a screwdriver ready to pop it out for the next rotation. It is really a very simple task once you do it once or twice. (Pratice at home when you get one.)

Having messed with a single shot clip and finding out it wasn't worth the aggravation, I do what most of the guys here do. Just set a round on the follower, trip the op rod and gently guide the bullet nose into the chamber. Then release the op rod and let it sharply chamber the round. I quit the single clip thing when it would not release from the receiver and cost me big time going into rapid.

Bending these things can be quite a chore!
