ARMS #18 install problem.

Hi guys,
I've searched here and many other places around the web and I'm still at a loss.

I have a Norinco M14S and I'm trying to install an ARMS #18 scope mount. With the side bolt snugged up the rail is off the bore line by a significant angle. I used chalk on the receiver side to see where the contact points are. It looks like the only contact points are on the two "keys" (horizontal and vertical) of the mount. There is less contact on the horizontal key towards the rear of the receiver.

I've read comments about removing material from the backside of the #18 but don't really understand where exactly. The comments didn't have any pictures associated.

The receiver is clean and free of any burrs. The mount is brand new.

Any suggestions or links to instructions?

Haven't tried a #18 on a Norinco before.

No dramas on Springfields (Inc or GI) or on a Winchester to date.

By "angle" do you mean in the horizontal plane or the vertical?

did you leave the key in the rear dovetail loose whilt tightening the side bolt?

Is the front (top) locking screw clear of the top of the receiver ring?

How about the locating grooves on the side of the receiver. Many non-GI variants are off spec, but a bit of milling work can correct them. Even the new CNC'd receivers from some mfgs. are still dog-poo. Hideous, even! I won't name names as it's not pertinent.

Sadlak makes a checking tool set, but I don't know if you need to get one so far...

It's off in the horizontal plane. Maybe in pitch as well, I didn't get that far.

The rear dovetail key was loose.

Nothing is touching the receiver ring at the front.

The locating grooves look fine, but I don't know what wrong would look like. With the bolt removed from the mount and the mount pressed into the grooves by hand, it's not a solid fit. There's fore and aft wobble on the mount.

Edit: FWIW I did follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter.

No, I gave up trying to fit it to that particular Norinco and installed a Troy Battlerail instead.

I did manage to get it to fit pretty well on my new M14. It does have a slight cant but that can be dealt with by leveling the scope in the rings.

I'm having all sorts of lack of accuracy with my 18 1/2" barreled rifle. Hopefully yours is doing well.

They do take a little finesse but make a great low profile mount.



For my ARMS 18 install I did not go to full torque on the side until I had all three points making snug contact. I get the rear in the dovetail and line up the side. Then I made the side point not quite finger tight. If it rocks fore and aft you need to experiment with the front pad height by adjusting it up and down.

One the play is out fore and aft, I tighten the side screw a little more ( not fully). Then go back and check the front pad to see if it is there is any slack to take out. Check the back as well. Finaly more torque in the side screw. 15 inch lbs I think.

Once that ARMS mount is on right, there is no real need to take it off.
