M39 Sneak?

I recently bought a pretty strange M39 target/sniper style gun and was wondering if anybody may have any input they could share. It has no Mfg. info or date stamped onto it. It has serial #505,xxx on both the barrel and receiver, 3600 on the barrel and a D-stamped on the right hand side of the receiver. The stock is a 2-piece finger groove (correct WW II style). The scope mount looks like a PU style only it is much taller and has two round hole rather than normal one. The scope is an un-marked 4X24 Swarovski with the Finnish style center post w/3-non-connected cross hairs. I closely examined the stock cut-out by the scope mount and an very confident it has been there for quite some time. The gun is near mint and fires M.O.A. at 100 and 200 yards off a hard rest. I am wondering if this could be one of the rifles built in the 1960's for officers use. The only problem with my assumption is the serial numbers are not correct with those listed in Mr Bowsers very good book on Finnish riflles. Any input would be very much appreciated-SDH

As far as I know, the undated M39's were all post war. Is the finger jointed stock square jointed, round jointed, or zig-zag jointed?

The Finns to the best of my knowledge never used Swarovski scopes on Mosins and also, I don't think PU mounts styles were ever used on post-war M39's either.

Do you have any pics to show? At this point I'm leaning towards it being a recent "put together".

This morning I took some measurements using my Izzy 1943 as issued against the M39. The mount is over twice the hight of the PU, it has two holes in it vrs. the one found on the Russian and the rings are 0.150" less than the PU. The scope has it all over the PU and has the Finnish Post in it. The stock is the Zig-Zag pattern. The scope cut-out has been there quite awhile. The mount adjustment is an extra screw in the mount plate (ball style) to adjust horizontal axis rather than the material removal found on the Russian guns. The scope is scrubbed of all identifiers as is the mount. They where done by a professional and the finnish matchs, soup to nuts. I just can't understand the hight of the mount, a cheek piece would help, but, why would it be so high? I've been collecting rifles for over 30 years and never seen anything quite like this. I admit being somewhat new to the surplus market, but, scanning most of the data out there, I can fiind no mention of a put together or issue rifle in this configuration. When I get good enough to send photos I'll be posting the gun for further review. Many thanks SDH

I suppose another possibility is that you really have an ultra rare m/28-30-33 sniper rifle, though this is probably not likely give rarity. (pic borrowed from www.mosinnagant.net)

Ok, the pics are hopefully fixed now.

Wow. All I can say is that I think it's that high b/c it's meant as an aftermarket scope setup so you can use it on a rifle that doesn't have a bent bolt.

Nothing in life is ever definite, but I surmise that this is not a real Finnish military alteration.

Thanks very much for the input and the work on the pics, you are a true gentleman. Would you go as far as to put a cheek rest on it and use it for match shooting? I had it on a hard rest and shot "Many" M.O.A. groups at 100 and 200 yards using surplus ammo I love to shoot but if it's somewhat collectable, I'd restrain. Again many thanks-SDH

Its a PU base...

The mount might be someones hard work in a shop...

Considering you have a 'sniper' bolt I might consider shortening the mount to get the scope on a more sensible height.

I think the easiest solution would be to buy a reproduction PU mount on e-bay and just swap the scope into it. It should slide right on to the PU base you already have.

then no cheek piece is needed and it should be useable as-is. It will also look the part WAY more than if you add a cheek piece.
