mosin bolt problem

Just bought a 1955 Izhevsk M1944 at an aucton, sold with a "bolt problem". When the bolt is closed and lugs engage, the striker and rear of bolt do not engage with trigger mechanism, instead they go forward with the rest of the bolt. This means, I think, that the firing pin will strike the primer as a round is chambered.
Any ideas?

As you were. 14 year old son stripped and reassembled bolt, tried it in his M91/30, worked fine, replaced it in carbine and ditto. Just shows we should leave some things to youth.
Obviously previous owner had assembled it wrong. VERY cheap M1944 as a result.

With my limited experience with these, I've figured out there is very little that can go wrong with them except someone assembling them wrong. I encountered a similar problem with a rifle my dad had bought. I'd pop the bolt out of one that worked, put it in and everything was fine. Took both apart side by side to figure out what was assembled wrong with the one, put them back together and both fully functional.

Betcha its not Izhevsk, no doubt its Romanian. You got that for a very good price - there did seem to be a few very good prices at that auction.

Take it apart and check the sear/trigger assembly. The sear is the apart screwed to the bottom of the receiver that should catch the striker on the bolt when moved forward. Cheap to replace if that is missing or broken.

Fernleaf is 100% right. It is a Roumanian gun. We hadn't realised that the marks for Izhevsk and the Roumanian arsenal are so similar. My 14 year old still loves it and it joins two Izhevsk M91/30s on his corner of the gunroom wall with his Tula Toz .22 target rifle.:)

I can't figure out how the bolt would even fit in the rifle if it were assembled wrong. :confused:

it won't. the only way to get the Mosin bolt into the rifle is if it's correctly assembled

Not exactly true as if you have that screw that is on the safety knob set wrong the bolt will go into the rifle and the rifle may fire. With my dad's rifle, everything worked with the exception of the safety not being able to be placed in the on position.

the firing pin? that's the only screw i can think of. yes it will go in if the slots are not aligned properly, but that's not technically assembled wrong. it's just not screwed in well enough

The firing pin, yes. I spent an hour trying to figure out why the thing wouldn't work. Everything matched another bolt I had to compare it too. It came that way from the arsenal unless someone at Dunhams was messing with it. Very simple to fix but hard to notice it as the problem.
