Was trying out some South African 308 surplus in my Norinco M-14. 4" groups at 100meters than the old chinese surplus had been shooting(Red and black box Norinco) and less accurate...2" with the chinese stuff.it $650:move eek:a case. It's the only surplus 308 available now in my part of the world. Seems high , but then so did gold at $600/oz:crying:Love advice, like I shoulda bought 2 cases when I bought this one, should I fork over an extra200 for more of the same average ammo? If you're not familiar with it, it's brass cases, Berdan primed, quite clean looking and shooting. Comes in waterproff heavy rubber packs.

I've never used the SA surplus as I've still got a lot of the FNM. The FNM shoots 1 3/4-2 inches out of my AIA No4Mk4, but I haven't shot it out of my M305 yet.

How do those M305's look and shoot? I was thinking about buying one, but I don't know anybody that has one, I don't want to put out the money without hearing someone else's opinion first.

I picked up a couple of cases of SA quite awhile ago. For me it will shoot 1-2" off the bench in slow twists say 1/12 1/13.5. I'm not sure what it will do with the faster twists. In one case I built a P/H sniper knock off using all PH parts and that rig shoot a .375" group off the bench with SA ball, HTH-SDH

For $400 they are not bad at all. Fun to plink with and someguys go hog wild with upgrades.Have heard of problems with some though with out of alignment barrels/sights, cracked parts. So far no problem with mine.

Sure would beat three grand for an M1A, unless I win the lotto. But I see TRADE-EX now has SVT40's. I may never have money to spare......

Here's mine, but it's not exactly stock.;) It's got a LER scope on it now, too.

very cool rifle, but still don't have an answer or a push. Buy a case of the South African stuff or?

If you don't want the SA, you'll either have to scrounge other surplus up, or switch to commercial ammo or handloads.

Canada Ammo is supposed to have surplus 5.56 and 7.62 coming in the near(ish) future. No idea what make/origin it is, but it's supposed to be $300/1000 shipped.

I've used the SA in my m305 and it works good for me. Was there any indication as to where the 7.62 will be from - is it SA?

I hope that Canada Ammo will also have some 7.62 x 54r in soon as well...

There's been no indication from CanAm regarding the ammo's origin.

I did manage to find 5 boxes of '77 IVI 7.62 and one box of Santa Barbara 7.62 at a gunshow today. Paid a bit too much, but I've never shot either type before. I'm sure my newly painted N14 will eat it all up. ;)

That sure looks like a fun rifle! How long is the barrel? Is muzzle blast painful? How is the scope mount attached?

That sure looks like a fun rifle!

It's a very well-balanced, pleasant to shoot rifle. And a lot of fun.

How long is the barrel?
- 18.5 inches

Is muzzle blast painful?
- no, it's quieter than my 14.5 inch AR. If it had a brake instead of a flash suppressor, it would seem a lot louder to the shooter.

How is the scope mount attached?
- mount is a Springfield Armory Scout Mount. It clamps around the barrel.

The FNM is "very good ammo", SA is ok but not as accurate (My experience). The Austrian "Hirtenburger" is about the same as the SA, good but not as good as the FNM.

I have shot these brands in my Tikka 565 and my Sportco.

Looks like I need to start saving up for ammo for my Loaded M1A. :dancingbanana:

The ammo doesn't seem to be in any hurry to arrive and CanAm is playing his cards close to his chest. I wouldn't be surprised if, given the massive increases in ammo prices we've seen, his actual price is considerably higher than $300/k.

Time to buy that VZ58 and put the AR back in the case, I guess.

Stevo,

That is true, still if its cheaper then buying Remington UMC 308Win I'd still have to consider it for plinking ammo. It was 65 cents a round last time I bought a bunch of UMC. So at 30 cents a round its a good buy, even at 50 cents a round I'd have to consider it. Thats assuming UMC isn't more then it was a couple of months ago.

True. The South African 7.62 is selling around $.50/each so I think that's probably an upper limit (for now) on what the CanAm stuff will go for. I'm guessing it won't be more than $400/k, if and/or when it arrives. If it comes it at the $300/k price it's a bargain and I'll have to find more room in the ammo bunker for it.

I've thought of visiting Williams Arms and picking up a few of the 140 round battle packs, but I haven't had the chance yet and still debating about it, as its not boxer primed. I know trivial, but UMC is, meaning I can eventually use that Lee Reloading press I bought from Ellwood Epps after I pick up some dies for it.

Still that reminds me I need to price out the cost of 155gr Match Kings, thinking of making a "target" load for my M1A with them once I start reloading.

I don't reload (yet) so most of my shooting is dictated by what surplus is available. I've slowed down on my consumption of 7.62 Nato and 7.62x54R pending new supplies. I've got a china barrel full of assorted calibre boxer brass for the dark day when my surplus runs out.
Happily though, I've got all the .303 I can shoot.:dancingbanana:

Got any pics of the Springfield?
