Ok, well this is actually a late October purchase, but I'm only getting around to unpacking it and cleaning it up in November ;)
More pics to follow soon, but it's a Tikka barelled Finnish civil Guard M28 :)

Allrighty, just pulled the trigger on another M38 carbine. It's a common 1943 Izhevsk M38, but it's stocked with a rare M38 (not M44) wartime (correct 1943 vintage) laminate stock without the wrist crossbolt and without M44 bayonet inletting :)
Thanks P&S! I lucked out - turns out this rifle was incorrectly listed on the P&S website as having a normal hardwood stock (stoc knumber PS479) so it languished there for months until I asked Jean to hand-select me an M38 (as opposed to M44) stocked rifle. He didn't think he had any, but he did some checking and came up with this beauty! :)
:dancingbanana:
The only real negatives are the import marking and usual M38 counterbore. Oh well, I can live with that for such a comparatively rare M38 variant ;)

Claven2,
Does your new 38 stock have screwed on escutcheons? The 38 with a correct laminate furniture that I had put back until tomorrow evening has no escutcheons in the butt and only a liner in the front. That makes it actual war time correct? Thanks

In October I picked up this all matching 1944 Wather G43 which had been badly cut down sometime in the sixties:
http://img346.imageshack.us/img346/233/g43mediumfj7.jpg
But I managed to get a fairly good deal on a nice reproduction stock set, Brazillian Mauser trapdoor buttplate, and a barrel band set (not shown), which I recieved and installed for November ;) :

I've got another juicy German rifle to post, just as soon as it arrives. Stay tuned ;)

Hmm... what are the odds of finding a proper buttplate? Didn;t the originals hinge vertically?
derghost: I don't know what escutcheons it has as I haven't seen it in the flesh yet (pics from seller). In reality though, pressed escutcheons were starting to be used right about the time laminate stocks came out. I've never seen a laminate stock without escutcheons - only birch stocks. Also, no laminates have screwed in escutcheons, always either pressed or folded in my experience.
Bear in mind too - alot of wartime stocks probably got new escutcheons post-war.

By the way - who's making the repro G43 wood?
Skippy
11-02-2006, 10:55 AM
Claven2,
Real buttplates come up now and again on ebay etc, but they usually close for $200-300USD, depending how hard they get bid up in the last few seconds. I would have liked to get an entire original wood set, but that would have run me more than the rest of the rifl cost me.
The stock is a laminate repro, made to an almost perfect pattern, same 2mm laminate and same overall fit and finish. It's made by a Japanese company called Shoei, who used to produce whole reproduction rifles. A fellow in Holland hapened to snatch up a dozen or so stocks before Shoei stopped putting them together and is selling them for a pretty reasonable price, advertising mainly on the GK43forums. From the Netherlands it got to Toronto in 10 days flat, and the Walther action dropped right into it.
The fellow who sells these IS NOT Adrian Slupik, who's been guilty of taking upwards of 3 months to actually deliver what he advertises. Adrian's stocks are inferior and not worth the hassle.
If anyone is interested you can PM me and I'll give you the email of they fellow selling these good stocks, he might have a few left.

Too bad you couldn't get a Shoei buutplate too! :) In any event, it's coming along nicely IMHO.

Nice looking 91/30 with a proper WW2 stock. IMHO scoping it would be a mistake unless it's reversable.

1944 Tula M44 on a Hex receiver.
1945 Izhevsk M44, laminate stocked.

Looks like I'm going to have to start sprinkling birth control pills around my gun cabinets... these Mosins just don't know the meaning of Abstinence ;)

Got a closeup of the cartouche on that M44 stock? Should be a roundel with hammer & scicle in the middle surrounded by CCCP. Is it still shellac'd? It looks like maybe the wood has been stripped. If so, you can order the proper garnet shellac from shellac.net to restore it. Alternately, the Lee Valley amber shellac flakes are close enough for all but hte very pickiest people. You'll need methylated spirits to melt it and a good quality nylon brush or shellac pad to apply it.

Hi Claven,
Yes, the cartouche is exactly as you describe. It is also very deep and visable in the wood. The stock is also covered in about 15 other little cartouches.
Don't even say anything.....I stripped the stock myself, using an organic stripper and an old towel ....no sandpaper touch the stock. I did this because it looked like this was used to teach people how to brush the stuff on. I've never seen a worse looking shellac job on any other rifle. I was going to just use this as a beater gun, but I think after stripping the stock and that the bore is crisp and shiney, I will shellac the stock again and bring it back up to code....The only difference is I won't shellac all the gun metal, like they did at the aresenal.
I will post some pics, after she is reborn......Sound good?

11-09-2006, 08:34 PM
LOL - I won't say a WORD ;) As I said, buy the shelleac with a garnet or amber tinit. Buying flake and mixing your own works better. I prefer a 2# cut of shellac. lots of internet articles on how to apply the stuff - it's not hard. :)
"after" pics would be good ;)

If you can't find any amber shellac locally, drop me a line. I have some flake I can send. Just mix with wood alcohol.

Nice looking pre-war BSW. I like the gothic eagles they used :) So are these latest RC's all mixmatched except barrel and receiver like the last batch with crude EP renumbers, or are some other parts matching on the latest batch?
Here's my latest snag... dunno if it will arrive in November, but it should have shipped yesterday or sometime today... and no, it didn't appear on any seller's websites ;)
Wartime Tula PU ex-sniper. I already have the mount, rings and real scope (not a recent repro) so setting her right should be pretty easy... ;)

My 2A1, I may replace the butt because it is too dark, what do you think? What does the "S (arrow) A" on the butt stand for? Everything is parked but the nose, which is a good old Mk.III cap.

It's Ishapore Small Arms. Don;t replace it - that's the correct buttstock.

Here's a couple pics of that Tula Hex M44 I got earlier this month.
http://www.gunboards.com/forums/uploaded/Claven2/2006112421734_IMG_3533net.jpg
http://www.gunboards.com/forums/uploaded/Claven2/2006112421742_IMG_3534.jpg
Tula only made M44's for a very short time in 1944 and produced fewer than 100,000 of these carbines (compared to 7.66 million made at Izhevsk). VERY few of those 100,000 would have had hex receivers. It's not known why some hex's were used, but it can be reasonably guessed that older receivers from irreperably damaged pre-1936 rifles were used at Tula as a stopgap to hit production targets from time to time. This one has only a Tula star and 1944 on the underside of the tang, so it's impossible to tell what the receiver's history is/was before Tula remarked it in 1944.
In any event, this is a pretty rare Soviet Mosin. Did I mention non-import marked, not counterbored and the bore is perfect?
