BRITISH ARMY WWII DATED UNIT ARMOURERS STEEL TOOL BOX COMPLETE WITH ONE INNER TRAY
CLEARLY MAKER MARKED, ISSUE MARKED AND DATED 1945

Steel Tool Box as used in the field by Unit Armourers
16” long X 8” wide X 7” high
Hinged lid with padlock hasp closure and sliding inner tray.
One end of the box is clearly stencilled D (D Company)

Original manufacturer’s markings on box lid and front side of tray as follows:

SIZE: 3” X 2” X 2”

Original subdued finish with hinged lid and closure catch

The lid is marked as follows:

No.I MKI impressed No.32 SS (No.32 Sniper Sight)

Part of the Unit Armourer’s tool chest. Would have been carried in the steel toolbox inner tray and would have contained spare No.32 scope, screws and washers.

Egyptian FN49 in 8mm. I have been chasing this particular rifle down for a little while now, and now that I finally have it in my hands I'm pretty pleased with it. Overall condition is great in my view. Haven't taken it out to see what she'll do but looking forward to that.

I didn't know it when I initially inquired, but it turns out to be from pretty late in the production run; SN 35xxx, a three-swivel variant with the scope cut. Initial inspection shows she's all matching and the bore is in very good shape - though a good cleaning is overdue. Has the original single-piece firing pin which I will replace with a two-piece I bought on spec.

Why an FN49? First saw one in an old Guns and Ammo "Surplus Firearms" magazine I picked up. Great looks and FN build quality, what's not to love? Why the Egyptian model? Easiest to find, and I can focus on 8mm, having an RC K98 in the safe as well.

I have a couple of questions mixed in with the pictures that I'm asking participants on a couple of boards.

First: The gas cylinder plug will not turn easily..scratch that...will not turn at all without serious effort. I suspect a soak with penetrating oil will help. Other suggestions?

Second: the stock is dry. Dry as only decades in the desert (and more recently in Alberta) can make it. The stock has been repaired once and I'd like to try to get some life back into the stock before taking it out. Thoughts on the best oil to use that combines good feeding without altering the colour of the stock too much?

Stock: boiled linseed oil is what you should use. You can buy it at Canadian Tire.

Thanks Stevo. The latch button does push in, but the cap won't rotate at all, either way.

And just want to confirm direction of rotation. If I'm standing at the muzzle end looking back toward the receiver (with rifle empty and bolt removed of course), which direction do I ultimately want to rotate the cap? I believe it's counter clockwise from that perspective, correct?

Should rotate either direction, IIRC. I'll check mine in the morning as I'm at work right now. Are you pushing it in while turning it?

It's probably just crudded up, have you tried any penetrating oil or WD40?
