im building a fixture to drill and tap the front base for the Unertle front scope base,
it will set the holes in the right place, and with a level bubble should be able to keep them indexed with the rear sight base,
can be used with a bench top style drill press, first ones should be available in a couple weeks, caution,..they arent cheap..around 300.00 only worth it if you plan on doing a few, or sharing with a few buddies.

so heres the update..
we went back to the dawing board and cleaned up my over thought fixture..gee i would never do that, over think something..
simplified it so to speak..cut the cost way down.
tried the prototype yesterday, worked pretty darn awesome.
so,, it will be made of alloy, have replaceable drill guides, and a tap guide for the 6-48 tap, will fit all the standard contures, some are thinner then others.
cost will be around 120.00 shipped. much cheaper then 300.00
ill post some pics next week when they are available.

thanks Jim,,took a while to get it from paper to end use..i made this with the average hobbiest in mind..the only real math a guy has to do is figure out the drill depth, most drill presses have a depth stop. i used some tape in the picture to give the user an idea of how to set the depth without a stop. the first one i did, didnt have a removable guide, and it still made tapping a chore, so i added the guides, and it makes this job real easy..and keeps the holes straight, and the threads in line..

Really like the way the jig squares up on the rear sight base and sets the distance to the front block!!
Maybe for your next project you can figure out some thing for lining up the retangular opening in the handguard.

im not having any real issues making that cut...dont see any advantage of a fixture, takes me an hour to get one pretty much cut and done..
