Remington Mod 30 /P 17

I recently picked up this action from a friend for a cheap price. That action looks extremely strong and when I mount a barrel on it I should have a tack driver. Originaly a 30-06, I'm curious what caliber or case could I go to when I do rebarrel it. I know that there are a million answers to this question, but I need to start somewhere. I'm looking for a long distance type rifle for 1000 yard shots. I'm wondering if a 300 Win Mag case fit in a long action like this and would I need to get the bolt face machined?

If in excellent condition, this is an excellent action for the .300 win Mag. The M 30 actions were a commercial variation of the famous M 1917 action. There are many barrel, trigger options available.

If it was my project, I would consider having the qaction tested for any possible cracks or damage. Good luck

The easiest (and classic solution) is to substitute a bolt from a P14. The 303 Brit and 300 Win Mag have very similar rim dimensions.

What about the 6.5mm cartridges that are great for those 1000 yard shots-.260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmore? Lower pressures, less powder use, better BCs, lower recoil. It doesn't take a lot of .300 Win Mags to eat up a pound of powder.

6.5-06, 338-06, 35 wh., 25-06, .30 gibs, all all great cal,s and you wont have to change anything but the barrel.
iv done all on rifles that were originally 30-06, from 1903 springfield, 1917,s to Remington 700,s all worked well, and were easy to build.

I have done conversions of the M1917 to .308 Norma Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum and I think it is a lot easier to mill out the face of the M1917 bolt for a magnum cartridge than to mess around trying to alter a P-14 bolt with its different shaped locking lugs and different extractor.

Jim K is right, its easier to use the 17 bolt, then try and deal with the 14 bolt, the extractors a bear.
