I have bought a C/|\ marked Cooey M82 on the EE on CGNTZ, it's on the way in the mail. It wasn't cheap...it was advertised as being in excellent condition.

At the gun show I saw a non military proofed M82 for sale. It had the rear peep sight, the forend was a shorter affair, but otherwise the rifle was identical to the military marked one, with the central stock band. It was in very nice shape, and the price was much lower than the military ones. (it was $90)

Would it be worthwhile buying it? Or no collector value in the milsurp world?

At $90, you could hardly lose. Not sure about the forend being shorter, unless it has been altered. All the 82s I've seen, with and without military marks had the same configuration. The forend is a separate piece of wood, the two pieces coming together under the band, but they are not attached to each other.

Yes, I had a good look at it and the seller pulled the forend out...we tried a long forend another vendor had for sale in and it fit perfectly.
The short forend in there looks intended...I think it might have come from Cooey like that but I could be wrong, someone may have cut one down or fabbed a new one.

No C/|\ , is it worth bothering with? Or at $90 it's a good deal?
How many M82's have people seen with no military markings?

The peep sight alone is worth $20-$30.

I do not know the ratio of military marked/civilian 82s. Century had a batch of military ones for sale years ago. That may be the source of most of the military marked ones that you see. I suspect that a lot were scrapped. I have heard that the bolts were removed from the ones issued to cadet corps, in 1949. We certainly had a batch of boltless ones when I was in high school. At $90, I think it would be worth picking up, but I would want to have the extra forend piece and a muzzle band, just in case.

The bands are cheap enough. Numrich has had these for years advertised as "bands for some Cdn military trainer??" I think their price was a couple bucks for the set.

I had a look but they don't even list Cooey. Any chance you could find a link to that? I'd grab em if they have em. Thanks, Tom

Just checked my 82s. One is military marked, the other isn't. The military one has a pilot hole where a centre swivel could be installed, although one never was. I wonder how much these rifles were actually shot.

I see what you mean, mine has that hole too.
I got the non military M82 this week, it's in beautiful shape. Note the short forend...the seller told me that's how Cooey made them, after the war civilian production. I think I'll leave it that way, although...if Numrich wasn't sold out of those band sets I'd buy them for both rifles and it might still happen, who knows. I also received an NOS peep sight for the M82 Cadet, and it's now on there, so both rifles have peeps. The Mossberg has a swing over peep and is a very nice rifle with a 7 shot clip, it's literally in new condition.
On Joe Salter's website, there are several Cooey M82's, if I'm not mistaken some of them are not C/|\ stamped...they seem to be $275usd rifles.

These Cooey's are very nice rifles, I love the huge forestock...

I'm waiting for the Enfield Sht 22 in the mail...

BTW, I'm actively looking for the right deal on a good camera. Does anyone know why you have to load your pics to the internet first before posting them on here? I could wish you could upload directly and save that extra step.

Cooey certainly could have marketed the rifles in that configuration. I suspect that the "Senior" (later model 75) single shot descended from the 82. There is certainly a similarity between the 82 and Senior stocks, and the barrel lenths are the same. Can't imagine Cooey wasting perfectly good product.
I'm on dialup. It takes about 8 minutes to upload a single photo to a hosting site. Wish there were a faster, more direct way.

Model 75 was introduced in 1937 followed by Model 78 target in 1939. M82 appears to be a M78 target with extended forestock.

I should have checked my Belton before speculating!
