Opinions Wanted: Refinishing Metal on a Steyr M95

Hi guys,

I have a Steyr M95, which I'll be using for deer hunting if it proves at least as accurate as my Mosin M38. The rifle's finish is almost entirely worn off the exposed metal, I'm wondering how the rifles were originally finished? As most of that original finish is gone I hope I won't be branded "bubba" for wanting to do this haha!

The ones I've seen were finished in a nice blue, similar to the mausers of the 20's and 30's.

If you don't mind spending the oin to reblue you'd probably end up with a pretty prisitine rilfe, and if you don't plan on selling the rifle (since you want to use it for a deer rifle) you shouldn't be wprried about the effect the reblue will have on the resale value.

In truth the collecter value on an M95 is negligible in the current market, so you're not spoiling a fortune.

Of course, you might want to check for german waffenampt stampings which would increase the value of the rifle at least to the point that you'd be better off selling it an d using the profit to buy a more mundane one to turn into a deer slayer.

Them M95's must have had a rather fragile finish, even the ones in good shape seem to have gray metal. Especially the bands, etc.

if its a great hunting rifle, you may have it parkerized, iv done a few woods guns for guys, they love the low glare finish, and the durable wear it has.
and it looks pretty darn cool as well.
i refinished a nice M95 for a guy a couple years ago with hotsalts blue, came out very nice.
