Bought a nice old Savage "U.S. Property" No. 4 at the Regina Gun Show a couple of weeks ago. Seems to be okay, other than the stock. Methinks some full wood would be all it takes to restore it. It doesn't appear to have seen much use at all. Anybody see anything else that isn't right?:p:p

Yep, Bubba all right. He did the same thing to my Remington Mosin, serial#24. The man has no sense at all. You still have a great looking gun that should shoot just fine-SDH

Assuming that there are 2 numerals under the blackout, the rifle was made in the late spring or early summer of 1944.
If only one numeral were blanked out, the rifle would be an early one, a Mk. I, instead of a Mk. I*, and would be dated on the left sidewall of the receiver.

Thanks tiriaq. There are two numbers, indeed, under the blackout. I have another one, a full wood version. I'll have to dig it out and check it over.

What is written on the lefthand side of the receiver, if the woodwork is
original sporterised, it a No4 Mk1/3.

The sported forend does indeed look as if it was adapted from a Mk. II pattern. The receiver markings, however, are clear, original and intact.
Time to start collecting "S" marked parts for a restoration.
