I had posted before (on the other forum) asking for info on the relative value of a consigned 1.6 million Springfield that turned out to be a Blue Sky repatriot. The rifle was marked at $700, but, as the post below shows, the owner was willing to go lower. Here was the original post:
I've come across a 1.6 million (May '43) Springfield Garand in a gun shop:
The usual assortment of parts - mostly Springfield
Milled trigger guard
Extremely tight, smooth trigger
Tight, crisp locking mechanism
Hooded rear site
Cleanly re-parkerized receiver with barrel apparently attached when re-parked (parked rim of chamber)
Barrel fails the bullet wear test (all the way up to the cartridge) and I have no clue as to head space
Very nice stock furniture, one color, sanded at some point - no cartouches visible
Newish-looking web sling
Cleaning kit in butt storage area
The whole rifle is clean and well-cared for
Owner will let it go for $600.
Is that worth the bux?
After several replies on CSP saying it wasn't worth the price with a used-up barrel, I went back to the store and asked the salesman to call the owner and ask if he would take $500. He made the call. When he returned, he said,
"The owner says that since the CMP now has a waiting list (news to me), he is withdrawing the offer to go down to $600 and now wants the full original $700."
Holy mackerel. I said "thanks" and left.
I'm having a little trouble getting to a match. I can't find a local range that will allow me to demonstrate putting 50 rounds safely downrange and fill out the CMP form, so the CMP option has become a little rough for me. On the advice of the forum I went down to a gun show this weekend because there are usually deals there. The best deal I found was a mixmaster for $1099. Hello.
I suppose the best idea is to just keep my eyes open for a while?

Keep your eyes peeled. One will come up. CMP has a waiting list now? Hum, news to me too.
The whole story sounds as if the seller was really in the mood to make bundle on a rifle that wasn't worth it and rather than sell to someone who is in the know, he'll wait for some sucker to come by and take the deal and think he came out ahead. Who needs it!
You can get a field grade from CMP for $495.00 plus shipping or a service grade for $595.00 plus shipping. Oh yeah and they won't be Blue Sky imports!

I'm willing to spring for a Service Grade but because of sickness in the family I'm having a little trouble scheduling anything in my life, including shooting in a high-power match. It's a bit of a pain, but I'll perservere! Worse stuff has happened.
Bob
Orest sent out an update last week and says the quantity of orders have gone through the roof and there will indeed be quite a wait for that little white truck if you are just now ordering.:ugh:

Bob, your 50-shot record of competitive shooting can be high-power rifle, or a .22 caliber rimfire. You can shoot pistol, or skeet, it doesn't matter. Get out that .22 and fire off some rounds. A copy of your scorebook is all that you need to satisfy CMP rules. HTH, Karl

They don't have a waiting list - they are still digging out from the deluge of Winchester orders mailed on Dec 1st last year.
You can mail in an order and get into line, which I suspect will get shorter soon.
You have two weeks to make an in-person trip to one of the stores before they close down for the 2d half of March.
FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

All you need is proof you know safe gun handling, CCW, former military or policeman, or have shot in some sort of shooting league , trap, skeet, pistol or rifle. Good luck on your quest

You can also satisfy that requirement by holding a FFL of some sort or a concealed carry permit.

....and you could have a far better time and have a feeling of well deserved pride if you would attend an APPLESEED PROJECT Marksmanship Clinic which will gladly complete the Marksmanship Participation form which they bring to every shoot expressly for people such as yourself!
If you still have to fulfill the affiliated club requirement, the RWVA is a CMP affiliate that not only desires your membership but also needs your donations to help us meet our goal of recreating America as the Nation of Riflemen it once was. There's going to be an exceptional amount of activity on firing lines across America when we're 60 million strong, no?:super:

You are ten years behind the times on the qualification requirement. You only need to provide proof of ANY kind of shooting activity.
Have you passed a hunter safety course?
Armed Security license?
Military or law enforcement service?
Concealed weapon permit?
Federal Firearms License?
even if no to all of the above the CMP has a form that you can take to the range to demonstrate safe handling and have signed by any range employee.

Good luck, hope you order one soon.

Bob-
I am going to the N. Store either this week or next. If you want, I will bring my guages, and get you a decent shooter. All you have to do is pay the cost of the rifle and the shipping. A good rifle can be had for about $500-$600. Email me or PM me if interested.

Bob- just so you know-- I would ship either to a FFL or to you, if you can produce a valid C&R license.

I second Karl's comments. You can use any marksmanship activity... 3-gun, qualification firing for concealed carry, even air rifle, one supposes.

Just an update: I'm looking into a couple of options here, including the kind one above.

Federal Firearms License?
I'll just say that, even though I qualify for the CMP as retired military, the C&R is the smartest $30 I've ever spent on this hobby. I save that much about every order from MidwayUSA or Brownells. :D
FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

Bob,
Check the CMP web site for Garand,Springfield Vintage Miitary rifle (GSM) clinics in your area.
http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchUpcomingSearch.cgi?designation=GARAND
There are more and more such clinics/matches being offered around now that the CMP has started offering GSM instructor courses and this way you are not tied to a high power match. Once you get that done a trip to the south store in Anniston, Al (about half way between Birmingham and Atlanta, Ga)would make a great way to personally select your very first Garand.

If you pay 700 for the rifle,200 for a new barrel, and 100 for a gunsmith if you cant do it yourself you will be in the CMP correct,or collectors grade range, and you still have a mixmaster.Any chance your a veteran? that counts as range time.

Bob,
If you can't get to a range, then consider getting a concealed carry permit, which qualifies as marksmanship activity under the CMP rules. If your state is a "shall issue" state, then the applicable authority(In my state it's the county sheriff) has to issue a permit to you as long as you do not have a criminal record.
