What's is your thought on this? Will there be any Lake City M2 ball ammo left after all the mail orders are filled?

My guess, no. Since Mr. Michaels indicated they had no reason to believe they would get more.

Having said that, I hope he is wrong!

I'm sure they will have none left over as they have been pretty good at estimating the amount of incoming orders laying in the basket. If they do have a small amount left I would be willing to bet it would put up on the counter at the south store and it would be gone in a day. Use the HXP, it's just as good or better.

Orest did point out that everyone who ordered before 1400 on Feb 20 would receive their lake city M2. Other than that who knows? But then one would believe Orest's estimate to be on the conservative side. That said, it's likely there will be some left over. How much and how they will sell that unknown quantity, only Orest will know when all the orders are processed.
Glad I went and picked up 4 crates at the North store last wednesday

I went up in Jan. I was gonna buy Greek as I already had enough LC, but once I got there they had LC so I brought home 8 more cans. Now that the Tax return is here I think a couple crates of Greek are in order.

Had a smile when I read about all the LC ammo disappearing.

At a recent gun show here in Kansas City three weeks ago a fellow was starting to unload a 1/2 pallet of LC 1960 ball ammo onto a dolly. A fellow walked up to him and asked if he could buy all of it.

The old timer was pretty fast on his game getting a handful of $100 bills and the buyer to unload the rest.

hello,

On Wednesday morning there was 2 pallets of Lake City at the north store.

I was lucky and had a friend going to the north store. He bought me 3 cans of LC and I have one on order (Feb. 14) on the Estore. I should be seeing the last one in about 90 more days.

Take care,

Hello,

Call them Monday or before you go. I don't know if there is any left. Save you a trip if you are only going for LC.

Take care,

The CMP had LC in the past, sold it all and then the Army turned up more. Who knows what is tucked away in some ammo storage point somewhere? More LC may show up again. I think it is a bit funny though, this frenzy over LC when a couple of years ago the experts were scorning it for the 'much superior' Greek ball. Now everyone wants LC!

Speaking of LC ammo, in all the lots that have come down the CMP pike, has anyone seen any lots with a date after 1972?

Years ago I read an article in American Rifleman claiming that a final batch of 30-06 on Browning links was made up for South Vietnam in early 1975. Given the abrupt collapse of South Vietnam that spring, it was speculated that the ammo may not have gotten there.

Have some LC in CMP boxes dated '69. De-linked machine gun ammo. Shoots fine.

Just got an email the other day that my two cans of Lake City I ordered back in December is now shipping to me and should arrive early next week. I'm wishing I'd ordered a few more now.

Seems reasonable, but I thought congressional funding was curtailed before this, like in 1973 or 1974? My last CMP match in Youngstown had LC 1972 and it ran fine. Prior to this we were issued HXP 1974, which ran fine as well. If I run into dates after 1972 on the LC I'll let you know.

I bought some of the de-linked LC from CMP a few years ago. That was the stuff that they had Talon de-link and box for them. It came in cans that had nomenclature stating linked with a packing date of 1975. All the ammo was 69 headstamps.
My bet is that they took boxed ammo already in inventory and linked it in '75.

The newest M2 ball headstamp I have seen is 1972.

Always believed that "old" ammunition not stored within sealed containers became stale. A friend said that it would stay good for a long time if properly stored. So what's the real story?

Would suppose with a semi-auto such as the M1 Garand, correct power and pressure of the round is most important. Have about 600 rounds of vintage military ball 30.06 dating to the 1950s much of it being Lake City. Since I picked the stuff up at shows, it has been stored within metal ammo cans. How it was kept before hand is not known.

How old is this Greek ammo derived from the CMP? Have a couple of bolt action rifles where the old ammunition is not an issue. If the round turns out to be a dud, a person can just manually cycle to the next one.

Will this 30-40 year old ammunition cause problems with M1 rifles?

From what I understand ammunition will stay good a very long time if kept in a cool, dry place. Ammo in sealed cans may get hot but at least the can keeps moisture out. Since this ammunition is loaded to M1 spec and won't get more potent in storage it isn't a hazard for M1 rifles. I've shot thousands of rounds of Lake City and HXP and have yet to have a problem with any of it my M1's or M1903s.

Now if you get a can that was stored under poor conditions for a very long time malfunctions can be a problem and I have had that happen a few times, especially with some very old .303 British. I have never had a problem with CMP ammo though...yet.
