picked this one up today at a local funshow. it appears to be an all correct original Winchester just finished up a data sheet for the Carbine Club the only thing that is out of wack is the N coded front sight can't find anything in Warbaby or the CCNL's that i have about any transfer of front sights to Winchester except for a circa 1944 transfer of parts unspecified from both Saginaw and Standard Products that is in Warbaby. all parts are correct per Warbaby for the vintage but the front sight, anyone else have an N coded front sight one their Winchester rifle in this range? any thoughts. here are a few rough pics.

thanks Bruce, i came by this rifle by accident wasn't looking for one at the time. the owner couldn't live without the 1911 it took to obtain the rifle. i think i came out on the good side of the deal RemRand pistols are a dime a dozen. best regards

Hello Stu,
Been awhile.
I have 5,811,227.....Figure it was stamped on Oct 12-44 from some early info I saved. It has the regular Win type I frt sight and still has the flat bolt. I can't find any info about any tranfer "N" sites either.
Any sign of it possibly being removed/replaced?
Just wondering if maybe someone filed the blade down to far.
It will be interesting to see if there may have been Frt Sites passed on to Winchester.
Here's a pic of my Father's bring home 5,573,898 and my 5,811,227.
5,5 in back, 5,8 in front.

Regards

can't see any evidence of if being removed/replaced. it is the only thing about the rifle that is out of place everything else is as it should be. no type 3 barrel band shadow the rear sight is factory staked it's a head scratcher for sure.

Stu,
My guess would be that you ran across another "Not yet documented" issue with our beloved Carbines.
You just gotta love a mystery !
If you were a less experienced collector, I'd be questioning if the frt sight had been removed, but I know better.
Congrats on another very nice find.

Best to you

I would tend to think Charlie has a very good answer. It very well could have been replaced years ago(the gun in question is over 60 years old) due to another persons sight picture. Then again,it could have been replaced due too damage.

thanks Charlie, the sight being replaced years ago had also entered into my mind. i filled out a data sheet I'm sure Bob will search the data sheets on the rifles in this range per my request in the additional info i wrote on the back of the data sheet. if there is any for or against the sight it doesn't matter to me one bit i'll leave the sight as is on the rifle it's one of the nicest most original Winchesters I've ever owned. best regards'

Stu,
Take a look at the milling on this "N" marked frt sight on my S'G' 1,823,135. It shows a similiar fingernail milling style like we find on Win Type I's.

The milling pattern is probably just from the person doing the milling, but the side profile looks very close to Winchester's profile. Below is a picture of a normal Winchester type I,

I have a 5.74 Win but it has a type three barrel band so I asume it is a replaced front sight. it has the same milling.
