    Slide marked with a P

I have a Colt slide I believe is a commercially marked slide with a P stamped in front of the rear sight. There is no serial no. stamped by the firing pin channel. Could this be a commercially marked slide used by the military ?? Any help or comments are welcomed.

Is it a replacement part not yet allocated to a frame?

    Thanks Jim

    Jim,
I think you are entirely correct. When I compare it to my 1942 Colt, the slides are exactly the same. Except the 1942 has the serial no.. The person I got the slide from said it came off a Remington Rand. Could have been part of a rebuilt. The only other marking is a V stamped inside the slide. Thanks Jim for your input.

FWIW Colt stopped numbering slides sometime towards the end of 1943 around s/n 1,140,000.

    vintage hunter,
Thanks for the information. I'm going to put it on a 1944 Colt in the 1,730,000 serial no. range.
It's a parts gun, but I want to get as close as I can to make it right. Thanks again.

FWIK COLT stopped numbering their slides in 1943 between s/n 1.138.000 and 1.140.000
I think it would be interesting to see a couple of pictures of this slide.

    Best.
I always tell my collector mates to put originality at the top of their priority list, originality isn't something that can be restored. I've never seen a 1911 I didn't like.

This is the slide on the 1944 Colt I'm working on. The receiver is parked and the slide is not. I hope these pictures help. Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated. I'm not the most knowledgeable.

I agree it's a parts gun, surely more of a shooter rather than a collectible but is not that bad at all.
I would look beneath the firing stop in case the slide belonged to an earlier gun; the trigger should be replaced with a short stamped one, as well as the stocks that should have large reinforced rings, and eventually reparked.
It's up to you, if it were mine I would keep it as it is.
    Just my two bob. Cheers.

There is no serial no. under the firing pin stop. I do have the short stamped trigger, I just haven't installed it yet. Once I get the trigger installed, I will have the gun parked. My park guy does a very nice dark park. I know It's just a shooter but that doesn't mean it can't look good. I'm still looking for the right grips too. Thanks for your input it was very helpful.

Slide and receivers are COLT's, it is a nice gun already, the only thing you could do is to have it all re-parked the same, but I wonder if it pays as I don't know prices in your Country.
