Help Needed with 91/30 sniper conversion

Have been tying to find a 91/30 sniper in excellent cond. Could not locate one suitable to me . So I have decided on installing a repro PU. scope and mount on a 91/30. What I am looking for is pictures and measurements of exact mount location on rifle as well as bolt dimension's for a original 91/30 sniper.

It's difficult to give measurements b/c there's alot of dimensional variation between Mosin receivers. Best bet is to look at the pics of real snipers in the library forums for Russia, print out some good examples and bring it to your smith to see what he thinks.

Go to 7.62x54R.com and read how to mount the scope onto your receiver. It's simple to do, but you must follow instructions to the letter to get the 2-3 deg down angle on the scope mount. I have done this conversion and it took about four hours to mount the scope and make the cut in the stock. I used a run-of-the- mill 91/30 so accuracy is not match by any means, but still fun to shoot.

Make sure your date match's the period they made the gun with that scope if you want a gun of the correct time frame. Then and stamp it with your own cartuche, I do SDH sometimes under the butt plate other times on the pistol grip, adds a little class and you always know where it came from, F.W.I.W.-SDH

Yes I seen the bolts on ebay and may pick one up. I know nothing about these scopes and mounts or on mounting them. The repo. scope I got came out of the UKRAINE and is marked N4-442074 with 91/30 above as well as a half circle mark then hammer and sickle and a star above it. the mount has a diamond with what apperas to be a #5 mark in the middle of it as well as a triangle with some sort of mark in the middle of it. Can the mounts work on round and hex recievers?? Also there is a pin on both sides of the base I assume thes are some type of locater pins and they would be located into holes drilled into reciever ??

A PU scope can technically be mounted on a Hex or low-wall round receiver, but that is TOTALLY WRONG. This NEVER happened in Soviet production and will look fake - VERY FAKE.

You need to build a PU sniper on a round, high-wall receiver dated 1941 or later.

The N4 serial numbered scopes (the 4 is actually a cyrillic character) are all reproductions made in the last 5 years or so. Real Soviet WW2 era PU scopes were never made with the N4 serial block prefix.

The e-bay bolts are fine, but they will be mismatched. If your original bolt is matching, you can send it off the Jim "the boltman" and he will expertly convert it for you. He is "The man" for accurate repro sniper bolts, but he's backed up at least 6 weeks at any given time.

If you get lucky enough, you may find a CH marked 1940's date and you'd be right to the good-SDH

I had a 91/30 that was an arsenaul de-snipered rifle. Unfortunately I never got around to refurbishing it.

the screw holes for the scope mount just needed to be freshened up. The old screws were ground off in the reciever.

I eventually traded it to a CGN who was collecting sniper rifles. He converted it back and used a laminate stock just to make it that much more attractive.

I got in trade, another 91/30, and a No1MkIII enfield with Patt07 bayonet

not bad really considering I got the original rifle for $55

I managed to borrow a 1944 dated sniper that the owner let me measure,fondle and snap some detailed pics for my gunsmith now I will have to let him start drilling&tapping.

Unless you're really fussy about this rifle being an original sniper, you may want to go to the Inter Ordnamce America web site and look at what they have to offer at very reasonable prices. Questar International as advertised on the CGN site will import it into Canada for you at very reasonable prices. The rifles are in EXC condition and are also available with PE scopes and mounts though at a higher price. I picked up one of the latter and am very pleased with it. There is a very good article on these rifles in the last issue of "Surplus" magazine. Questar is highly reccomended to deal with. Took about 6 weeks to get the rifle. bearhunter
