It was found at a C47/Dakota wreckage site near Arnhem, Holland. It was found by an archaeologist on a private dig.

I can see the gunbroker ad right now...
"WW2 era Colt M1911A1. Excellent+ condition for the age, some small pitting that should clean up. Bore excellent with a little frosting in the grooves and the grips are missing but are easily replaced. Sold as-is."

wow, very cool, love the history, would love to have something like that in my collection.
i have a few other dug, and found guns, knives ect. one i wish i kept was a Garand that was found on a beach , and sold to me by an old man that lived accross the street from me.
it was working, and shootable, but really rough, rusty, pitted, ect. like a dummy i sold it back in the 1980,s at a show, i dont remember what beach he found it on, the guy worked security in Ca and drove the beaches in the mornings.
thats one a few neet ones i let get away.:{

The British Police Constable I aquired it from said there was not a clip as far as he knew of. This is the way he received it.
Yep, the barrel has a little frosting problem, but you can see all the way down to what looks like the firing pin. And interestingly I did try a set of grips and they fit pretty well/no warping really. It would be interesting to see if somebody like Wayne Novak could bring her back to life. I don't know if that "blue" job can be reversed though...got a little on the hot side!! :o)
I found this 1911A1 with British Proofs for sale a while back that was just 11 numbers from this one. I thought that was kind of neat.
