I bought another Garand at the North Store several weeks ago, and shot it yesterday for the first time. Using HXP 67, the first group was way low and left. Total elevation was 17 clicks before I had it centered. :banghead:

This is a lot more than I've ever used before. What should I check first?

I've not run into a problem like this but what I would do is inspect the gas cylinder & front sight to see they are OK; If I had another, I'd swap & try again to zero the rifle. I'd also inspect the stock ferrule & lower band to see if they are OK & not damaged. I'd check the trigger guard & make sure it is locks in properly & pulls the receiver into the stock properly. Finally, I'd inspect the rear sight & make sure each part is OK & fits together properly.

I think that in a situation like your's once you get over 10-12 clicks of elevation is probably excessive. The 200 yard zero on my two M1s is 8 and 10 clicks of elevation which should be about right for a 6 o'clock hold on that reduced target at 100 yards. The rifle that I use at 200 yards has 13 clicks of elevation for a 6 o'clock hold on the SR target at that range.

The good news is the M1 rear sight has ample room for adjustment.

one thing you might try is to swap parts with your other garands a little at a time and see what effect that has.

Nujudge, first relax, 17 clicks is not "bad" I have had some that went more than 17 at 100yds. yes its more than most Garands, but if it shoots good your OK. I have had them from 4 clicks to 20 clicks to zero at 100yds. some of this is "your" head position on the rifle. get someone else to shoot it and see if its the same. most seem to be 8 to 12 clicks. I would guess that you can check everything and it will all be in spec. you could try a different stock, or if its still driving you crazy, you can file down the front sight, a little at a time , untill you get what you like. if you are only going to shoot it at 100 or 200 yds, than I would leave it alone if it shoots good.
