Just found this board recently and am always interested in new Krag Forums. I have a beautiful 1896 Krag that I aquired recently from a trade. I have a brass muzzle cap, 1896 stamped Bayonet w/ period correct type 2 scabbard, Rock Island leather sling, 3 piece cleaning rod set and oiler. This is by far my favorite battle rifle I own. I mainly collect WWII battle rifles, but have found myself looking at earlier period arms. Just picked up an 1873 trapdoor through another trade. Anyway, I am glad to be here. Thanks for the comment regarding the Krag. I disagree with you regarding the use of the flag, but it is your own opinion and I respect that.

Let me provide a little background history of the flag. This was my Grandfather's flag that he proudly flew at his home since I can remember. He was also a Sea Bee in WWII which he proudly flew even before WWII, as my late Grandmother used to say. My Grandfather would tell me stories of his hunting trips in east Texas, and how he could take down anything with his "old trusty" Springfield Krag that his father gave to him. Over the years he ended up selling the Krag, but he always kept the memories of his Krag dear to his heart. He used to proudly show me his long heavy rifle with such glowing enthusiasm. Growing up, I never really appreciated and never really understood why anyone would want to use such an old outdated rifle. Honestly, if he gave me that rifle when I was young, I probably would have sporterized it, and cut down the barrel. When my Grandfather passed in the late 80's, my Grandmother gave me this flag with hopes that I would proudly fly it as my Grandfather did. I did what any young man would do and boxed it up.

Fast forward 20 years, and I started getting heavy into war history and collecting modern to WWII battle rifles. I met a gentleman from Bandera Texas that had a proposition for trading my AK-47 for something interesting. I bit, and drove down to see what he had. He brought out this long heavy old rifle and the hairs on my neck stood up. I knew exactly what is was. I traded the AK-47 for the Krag you see in the picture. I dug out my Grandfather's flag from an old box in my attic and decided to take these pictures as a tribute to my Grandfather. I just wish my Grandmother could have see them.

I have a 14 year old son that I have been telling the story to, but he is young and can't really understand what the use is for such an old rifle. Sound familiar. I am trying to locate some old photos from my Grandfather's hunting expeditions so I can get a look at what kind of Krag he had. I want to eventually build a display in honor of him.

That is why I used this flag. The flag is now safely protected and stored for a time when I can find a better solution for it's preservation.

Yes Sir! I am looking for an 1898 (I have a 1902 Series 2 rear sight) or later American walnut handguard to match the rifle. If anyone has one, let me know. Thanks!

No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America . . .

I have great respect for the Flag of the US. I am quickly losing any respect for our elected officials. I will leave it at that's a nice rifle.

Ok, I read the Federal regulations and while I have great respect for the flag, my intentions were never to disrespect. I do not read Federal code very often either. I hope there are no hard feelings.:beerchug:

Very nice Krag and I take no offense on use of the US flag. I've always liked the M1896 Krags, especially when you add all the accoutrements.
Here's mine. M1887 sling, brass muzzel cover, later bayonet and scabbard, FA headstamped .30-40 rounds in a Hurlburt 50-round belt, knapsack and canteen. Oiler and cleaning rod in butt. M1896 rear sight. Only thing not correct to the original issue is the magazine cut-off. These were changed around SN 107,000-108,000 so that when they were turned down the cut-off was engaged. As far as I know all earlier Krag magazine cut-offs were changed over to the newer version so that they were consistent with new production.

very impressive ktags fellows , i am not offended eather - because i know you ment nothing but the highest respect ,

im in favor of the accoutraments as well , im now down to one 92/96 rifle with a tropical webb sling and four [period correct] bayos each with a diferent scabord type I-IV , and a 99 carbine ,

yours are keepers for sure
