Yesterday I picked up a WW II vintage #4 mk1 for a project. I got the Canadian manual on building a target version of the #4. I found this one covered in crap for $150.00 US. The bore looked like it might clean-up so I bought the gun. When I got it home and started cleaning it off with the hand cleaner I found some very disturbing things about it. First, it has no import marks, go figure. Then noticed the wood was really quite nice, now I'm getting mad, then I started looking at those crappy hand ground marks that reads something like No 4, MK 1 ROF(f) 8/43, the serial number reads F with an LB stamped next to it 26094A,hum same as the bolt. There is a JC and E stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. There is a B with the braod head on the type one mic sight. On the front sight there is a R.F.F. stamped on the drivers side and 0.015 stamped on the passenger side. The one good thing is it has a Savage #3 head on the bolt. All this being said, I just don't know if I should over haul this one or log it in the collection? I sure looks like a WW II gun and I'd hate to make a match gun out of a correct piece, assuming it is one. I sure could use a little input here guy's-SDH :bash:

Thats how ROF(F) marked their receivers - aka Fazakarly (British). They are a WWII maker, commonly known for WWII Jungle Carbines. 8/43 would be Aug of 1943. For $150 I'd be very pleased. Thats how much sporters go for up here, then add another $150 for a nice stock set. The wood looks like walnut, which is proper for WWII.

I can't comment about the LB markings, but everything sounds kosher so far. The bolt head can be replaced quite easily if you want to be picky. Is the old girl matching?

Al appears correct. I pulled it apart and the trigger is still part of the trigger guard, so I assume it hasn't been up-graded to the type 2. The wood looks like walnut, it's nice and dark on the inside. I guess I'll have to fish around for a bolt head and log it in. I really had my hopes set on building a match gun as prescribed by the gun plumbers press, but this won't be the one. Also never planned on collecting #4's by the numbers but, if thats the way it's pointing I'll just have to consider it destinity, many thanks-SDH
