My results were:
Download= 1978
Upload = 691
Which I thought were pretty good until I did the comparison test for my area and there the download speed did not compare well.
How about you guys?

Just in case people missed it elsewhere as to what Ken is referring to .....
To help users who want a better idea of how fast their Internet speed is, we've added a new item called Speed Test (click here) (http://www.milsurps.com/misc.php?do=speedtest) to our menu bar.
Remember.... this doesn't tell you how fast your Internet connection is to our web site directly, but rather how fast your computer is connecting from it to the Internet. Your ISP may provide different levels of performance base upon what you pay for.
Of course, the higher your connect speed to the Internet, it follows you should see better performance connecting here.
In the spirit of Ken's posting, we're getting from our home computer:
Download = 5015
Upload = 426
We're using Bell Canada's Sympatico home DSL service and only receiving part of the speed we are paying for, which is supposed to be 8 megabits/sec.
When complaining to them, they boosted it from 3 megabits/sec that we were getting to the 5 megabits you see above, but said that's all we they could give us because of our distance from the central office.
Our only other choice would be dial-up at a lowly 56kb/sec, since we can't get cable broadband high speed here where we moved to. We had cable at our old house and were getting over 5 magabits/sec on it.
You guys should run the speed test, then check with your ISP to see what they say you should be getting based upon what they're charging you. If it's way too slow on the speed tests compared against their billing charges, then take it to them demanding they get their buns out and fix it. :bash: :lol:
Thanks for posting this Ken. I think a lot of members should take advantage of it to make sure they're not getting screwed by their ISP's. ;)

Badger

Comcast Net USA and have always had good performance. We are alleged to have increased speeds now with a cable modem reboot but unfortunately I can't "edit" later to update speeds if it's true. Can you make an exception to this thread for "edits?"

so is this good,bad,mediocre or would Pony Express be faster?
I'm on Dial Up if that plays a factor,I'm located at south end of Lake Michigan(don't think location matters though).

I am paying too much and only getting 1000 kbps or only 1/3 the kpbs that I should be getting. Repeated complaints to the ISP and they shrug it off and say it is because we have old telephone wiring and that is the best that it gets. There is no cable and I know the telephone wire was laid in 1998. A dish is much more expensive ($100/Mo.). 1,000 isn't very good but it is a heckuva lot better than dial up.
Question. Is there any way to improve these figures, different computer, more RAM etc?:confused:

Ray,
I'm not picking on you but if your connection was any slower, you would be going backwards! :D
USPS Priority Mail would be faster. :)

Are you on an old dial-up connection, or is that being sold to you as high speed? :confused:
If it's high speed, can you re-run the test and make sure you're not missing posting a couple of digits on the 47? :lol:

Hi John ... :)
If you're paying Comcast for the same level of service the other guys using them are and they're getting almost twice the performance, you should give customer service a call and have a serious chat .. :bash: ..... :lol:
That is great UP performance though, as it's normally throttled low so people don't operate servers from their homes.

Badger,
It's cable but in an old neighborhood with old wiring. We are told they are upgrading the lines (probably lying to us :D). The new speed increase was supposed to be in effect two weeks ago but I haven't rebooted the cable modem since then. I'll do that shortly and post back. I have three computers on the router so I'll shut the others down and try again. Cost combined with and HDTV digital cable hookup is about $105 a month.

That's pretty darn good ... :super:
We pay well over $220/month for our Bell ExpressVu Satellite TV (similar to Direct TV in U.S.) and DSL (supposedly 8 megabit/sec) high speed Internet service.
They may be upgrading from "copper" to "optical" on your cable, which is what they did in our old neighborhood when we used cable TV Internet access and the speed did get better.

*Can't sustain this consistently, much lower average from three other attemps is about 6300 download. Maybe they did upgrade the wire but it looks the same outside to me. We are allegedly on the "end" of their lines, at least that's the excuse they always give us and optical transition is supposed to be in the works. We'll be the last to get it. However, I'm not complaining, the service has been very good for years.
I know I can get better late at night when the networks aren't as clogged such as on a Saturday afternoon.

ATL - 6990/2510
Tallahassee - 4830/2480 (some off-the-wall ISP providing the speedtest!)
I connect through Atlanta and I'm satisfied with the numbers, what with 3 pc's connected and a/v and firewall up and running and - and music streaming... ;)

I am on dial up with the same dial up ISP that I started with about 8 or 9 yrs. ago,Kmart's "My Bluelight",it's up to $9 a mth. now,is a fast server anything like a fast woman?,if it is,I probably couldn't handle it anyway,I don't play videos,only a few times when some one posts one on the forum that I would be curious to watch. What's going to be the result of the new digital conversion thingy if it ever takes place?,will (cable) dial up get faster?I've had Comcast cable tv for yrs.,personally I think they want too much $'s for Internet service,have had Basic plus one step up tv for years,it's up to 5x's the cost it started out at and less programs,now what was the question?,yeah,am I getting the speed I'm paying for?,don't know,but a faster server would just allow me to make mistakes faster anyway.

I have the cheap Verizon DSL 780K.
The test got me a DL of 745K and a UL of 116K.
I have a monitor and on occassions it has been well over 1 meg and on other occassions under 500K for downloads.
The speed is fast enough for me for now.

Hello folks .... :)
I just received an email from our software development guy, commenting on the Speed Test program he installed for us here.
I had incorrectly assumed that it was generically testing speed as it relates to your overall Internet connection.
He's corrected me on that point indicating that this specific speed test as installed on our site is not actually connecting to a different resource. This means that the speed that you are getting is actually related to your specific connection with our site.
This is why some of you will get lower or higher speeds at different times.
This is somewhat of a good thing because a normal speed test website will not provide a speed of a specific site. In other words, if you feel that our site here is too slow, then you can literally check it directly using the speed test link on the navigation bar at the top of the screen.
If you think that your general connection to the overall Internet is slow, then you might want to go to an external test, such as:
Speakeasy - Speed Test (click here) (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)
My apologies for the confusion ... :cheers:

It's never occured to me that it is slow because I never knew how fast/slow mine was against how fast/slow other people's isp's were so I had nothing to judge it against,on top of that it kind of doesn't occur to me that I'm waiting cause my mind wanders a lot and I spend the "wait time" chasing around trying to locate it and get it back,if I was using a computer for cooking it would probably take me 4min. to cook a 3min.egg.
