The Marines landed on Bougainville, the largest island in the Solomons, on November 1, 1943. The 24 canine members of the First Marine Dog Platoon was sent ashore just one hour after the first Marines hit the beach, under heavy mortar and rifle fire and were dispatched to various companies according to prearranged plans.

Cool pic.

While I never saw any combat, I did go off a ship once down the nets. It's not as easy as it looks, bouncing, heavy pack pulling you out, rifle in the way. Feet/boots don't want to cooperate.

But, thanks for the memories anyway.

I've never come down a net from a ship, but have done it with a full load down the side of a repelling tower. Not the same I'm sure.

But, I think I would take the net off a bobbing ship before I would go 80 feet UP a rope ladder into a hovering Chinook helicopter again. I think the roter wash bashed my rifle into my head about ten times going up.:banghead: That 70lb rucksack did'nt help any either!

Oh the good ole days in the Air Mobile Infantry! We were soldiers once and young...
