In central Florida, I went to an antique market which was part of an old flea market. I saw a floor lamp there that needed a closer look and it turned out to be an early type 99 with early bayo, no mum, and a Japanese helmet for a lamp shade! It had a solid brass base.

Who ever did it had some machinist skills and did not damage the rifle except for running a power cord through out the whole rifle. I told my wife I was going to but it and put it in the living room like the guy did in the "Christmas Story" who won the lady's leg lamp.

After she quit laughing, she said some words I did not know she knew. Anyways, I got the lamp er rifle. It will probably end up in my "Man Cave" so it's brillance will shine! There was an Enfield Drill purpose rifle there also a a floor lamp but I did not want to create further havoc.

If I want to restore the 99 I will have to find a bolt as the previous owner had to run a brass rod into the action to mount the rifle in a upright position. Stock was not touched and I did find some dimple marks on the lower part of the stock. They were in straight lines and resembled marks that you find on a M1 when you strike the clip against the stock to align the cartridges.

Price-out Japanese helmets on ebay. Wifey might be surprised how much the whole "ensemble" is worth.

The bayo turned out to be a Toyo Kogo with only one stamp. Bayo does not match.
The rifle is a Type 99 Series 2 by Nagota. Serial number is 45887.

Anybody got a functioning 99 bolt?

Neat find! Looks like Numrich has complete 99 bolts.

Wow! $104. for the 99 bolt. My rifle will have to stay a lamp for awhile longer.

Rifle bolts turn up fairly often on Gunbroker.

I checked some other sources for bolts. Poppert's has a type 99 bolt for $65. But then you get into manufacturor, series, and such. It's like asking to buy a front bumper for your car. Do you want it to match, or can it come from any make, model or year. The type 99 rifle series are varied, and unique to what stage of the war they were made.
So, on second thought, keep the "lamp" as it is. A rare piece of "trench-art", and look for an intact Japanese rifle. You can probably find a nice one at a reasonable price.
Good luck!

That is neat. I think I would leave it as a lamp even if I was able to find a correct bolt. How much were they asking for the british one?

I believe $195 but price could be brought down. Had WWl helmet on it but it was painted in camo that was just done. I can let you know where it is. Might have an image of it somewhere.

Wow! Reminds me of a very simliar lamp that occupied the "reading corner" in our old deer cabin for longer since before I was born. A WWI GEW 98 with one of those "butcher" type bayo's.
The cabin was built in the late 40's by the "doughboy" that brought the rifle home and his son who was a vet from the "next" war. I became part of the group in the late 60's. I recall often sitting under that lamp while reading the latest hunting and fishing tips that you could get from those issues of Field & Stream dated 1952.
