It looks like I am going to need to replace the barrel on my M-1. There seem to be quite a few on the market. My question is which is the best based on your experience. The barrel should be capable of 1 moa accuracy.:help:

Krieger has a special on .308 GI contour barrels right now. If you want a .308, $300 for the barrel, $60 for chambering and $15 for shipping.

When you say "The barrel should be capable of 1 moa accuracy" do you mean you expect 1MOA just by screwing this barrel onto a SG receiver? That ain't gonna happen. A number of other steps are required to get an M1 to shoot a consistent 1MOA.

What do you want it for? Plinking, Garand Matches, Across-the-Course, Long Range?

For plinking I'd say pick one. Not sure why you'd need 1MOA for plinking?

For Garand Matches (ie, GI contour) a Kreiger or Barnett will be good but best value for money is probably the Criterion sold by CMP. Don't need 1MOA for that either. The 10-ring on the SR Target is 2MOA. If you want to win Garand Matches learn to shoot Standing.

For XTC or LR a heavy Kreiger or Barnett in a properly built rifle will shoot 1MOA. They'll run side by side for around 4500 rounds. After that a Kreiger will usually last a bit longer.

Any of the usual suspects already listed will do a good job of installation. Check around for the best price and turn around time.

+1. In many ways, the woodwork is more important than the barrel.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

+2. Accurizing a Garand isn't hanging individual "gadgets" on the rifle, but rather a holistic process....the sum being far greater than the individual parts. Generally...you do all or you do none unless you like being disappointed.

BTW, consistent 1 MOA with a Garand requires a LOT of work up-front and nearly constant maintenance to keep it that way. Besides, sub-2 MOA will shoot you to the Podium at Camp Perry if you do your job!

All the information above is accurate and true. You will get a great barrel by following the advice listed the criterion barrel is one of the best for the buck replacement barrels on market for a straight stock replacement. The krieger is a button rifled barrel and well worth the extra buck. I suggest that you contact Arizona Ed in Mesa, he knows the scoop on local help in that state. Ed has always done me right.

Had good luck with Phil Arington long ride from Ohio to AZ to get my rifle worked on though.

Beat this. A douglas barrel installed for $329.00

I use douglas barrels on my 30 caliber service rifles. They will shoot inside your hold.

Thanks to all who have responded, I appreciate the input. I think I have decided on a Kreiger barrel. Thanks again for your help.
