Winchester Model of 1917

I snagged one at the local flea market today.. Walnut stock and hand guards..stock stamped W and also a boxed O.G.E.K. and another boxed letter code that I cannot read. Under pistol grip are three circle P cartouches, one with a small 5 stamp. SN# 438140 puts it at 1918. Barrel is W 9-18. Bayo lug/swivel is W, Bolt is W. The bolt release is E. All parts are blued and very good condition. I have not removed the wood. The bore looks very good. There is a yellow capped plastic oiler and chamber brush in the butt trap/

Sounds very good! OGEK is a rebuild mark from WWII. However most such rebuilds are parkerized. Neat that your rifle is still blued. Pictures... please. Sincerely. BruceV

Removed the styock. The floor plate is W, the trigger assembly is stamped N.S. and W. The Bolt handle is stamped W and N.S. The shroud is stamped W. The follower is E. There is an extra piece I am not familiar with that popped out when I removed the trigger assembly. It is about the length of the follower and has two ears ( one stamped U.S. 1917 E.) on the bottom, an oval opening on the left side and it is blued as is everything on this rifle.

Since the Model of 1917 didn't have a magazine cutoff, this handy sheet metal item was inserted in the magazine and depressed the follower allowing single shot usage. I think it's called a magazine follower depressor. They were made by all manufacturers of the US Model of 1917.

It took me a while to figure it out...thanks for the info. The butt plate is /1\ over W. What I thought was a chamber brush is actually a tightly wound pull through. The blued finish on this rifle is quite striking..like new under the wood. I wonder what the faint boxed letters are that I cannot read?

Doug, I wish I could call it a steal..but those old boys know about anything Winchester and I had to cough up $500 for it.

Sounds like the follower depressor, used for drill and inspection arms to keep the follower from locking the bolt back.
