My neighbor! Darn it. Why is a 96 sight so expensive?

Because the M1896 Carbine Sight is correct for a Spanish American War M1896 Carbine, the only Krag Carbine to see service in the war, the Rough Riders carried them and they are the earliest standard issue Krag Carbine.
