I have just purchased this Ljungmann, can anyone tell me the purpose of this side mount?
I am assuming it is not for a scope because as far as I am aware Ljungman's never had scoped mounted & potentially the action would get in the way with the scope?
Any help would be great.

I'm sure I remember a thread ( maybe on the old Jouster forum) by Peter Laidler where he made mention that the metal end caps were removed to reduce the chance of water / moisture becoming trapped and causing rot.

Am I dreaming it or did anyone keep a copy ?

On another forum I occasionally visit there is a thread in which it is stated that these metal endcaps were installed to stop rot, and that the woodwork was varnished to seal the grain and stop the ingress of moisture. Again - I'm pretty sure that Peter made some comment about this actually sealing in moisture and actually exacerpating (spelling ?) rot.

Funny how there are such diverse opinions, If Peter did say the above, I'd rather go with his version as he was 'on the ground' at the time.

Hi All - this is a quote from Peter's article in fitting a new forend - the question I have, because I'm a bit dense is about adjusting the rifle if you feel the pressure needed to lift the No 4 barrel is lower than the above. I didn't really understand all the terms - what and where is the barrel bearing reinforce seating? How is this adjusted to increase the pressure? Thanks!

by William M. Easterly

Deluxe First Edition published in 1998 with 584 pages and 686 quality illustrations.

QUALITY REFERENCE BOOK COVERING THE HISTORY, DEVELOPMENT, USE AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE LEWIS MG.

The result of over twenty years of research, this is the most complete account ever published of the life and times of Colonel Isaac Newton Lewis and his crowning achievement, the Lewis Automatic Machine Gun.

The Lewis became a favourite tool of the British and Canadian "machine gun killer" teams of World War I, but U.S. "doughboys" and Marines were issued the French Chauchat, instead. This gave rise to a bitter controversy, which became one of the most sensational issues of the decade.

The Lewis was the principal "free" or flexible Allied aircraft machine gun of World War I, manufactured by B.S.A. in England, Savage in the U.S.A., and Darne in France.

After World War I several versions of the Lewis were manufactured in Holland and by two Naval Arsenals in Japan. Japanese Naval and Air forces remained committed to the Lewis throughout World War II.

Two complete chapters are devoted to the accessories designed and issued expressly for use with the Lewis, one for general and ground gun devices, and one covering the special needs of Air Service guns.

GREAT REFERENCE BOOK FOR THE COLLECTOR AND HISTORICAL ARMS RESEARCHER.
Sure enough, it was installed wrong. Boy did I have a lot of fun trying to remember the drill. . I thought it was like your serial number....never forget...Lesson learned. I did do it. Now to check the 03A4. Gary

I just bought a U.S. Rifle M1917 made by Remington. It's in very good overall condition and I just finished thoroughly disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling the entire rifle. Everything is in working order but I noticed the firing pin shaft from the collar towards the end of the pin is slightly bent. Basically, that part of the firing pin shaft is not quite as straight as an arrow like my Mauser K98 firing pin when I roll the firing pin in my hand. Is this normal and does anyone else have a firing pin like this? I've attached a picture indicating the area of the firing pin that is slightly bent but I can't take a picture of my own firing pin:
