I recently joined this forum when I purchased my first M1 Carbine, a 1943 Rock-Ola, which is currently my latest obsession. Hope to find some good info here and maybe some parts as well. BTW, which is the most accurate book on these guns? I have several and there seems to be conflicting opinions. Thanks!

? about Inlands rear sight staking in CC newsletter

I got my CC news letter this afternoon and it is my favorite one to date as I have several original or near original carbines from this serial number block. This is the rear sight on my M1A1. The color looks kind of funky because of the camera flash and being under bad lighting. I believe it to be one of the rear sights that was staked in place before parking due to the stake marks being parked and the numbers being parked except the 2 which is under a shadow where the peep was during finishing. You can faintly see the shadow line in the top pic.
My question is the article talked about this type of staking on the milled sights but not the stamped. Is mine a anomaly or was this a normal staking on the stamped sight that was missed in the article?

I recently picked up a couple early Inlands. I thought I would share them with you.
I would like to thank member Scott R for the 204944 Inland
The other 112135 came from another sale.
I believe the 204k is original and the 112k is mostly original.
Both carbines are blued, but the 112k is much more worn.
Both show the two-tone Inland trademark finish on the barrel and receiver.
On both guns the trigger housings and slides both look parked and almost all small parts and pins are blued. The trigger housing retaining pins both have the spring and both hammer springs are 22 coil springs.
The stocks are both highwood I cut with a flaming bomb in slingwell, and the handguards are also IO with the flaming bomb. Handguards both are deep groove.
112K has also been sanded and the proof P is only partial and the cartouche is only barely visible in bright light at just the right angle.

They are very similar in parts. I will give a quick run down.

Got one of the last few Underwoods that CMP sent out. Turns out it was an Austrian LGKV marked rifle. The Type II barrel band is marked JM Q. Can't find info on it. Can someone comment on it - subcontractor, what production guns it would be correct for, etc. Was it particular to the Bavarian/Austrian guns, only?

It appears to be in excellent condition with the exception of the upper hand guard. It has the deep, almost black, finish that (I read somewhere) was put on the Bavarian/Austrian rifles. Any one care to comment on the finish?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I finished my retro XM177E2 / CAR15 lightweight Carbine! It is a carbine, and it is retro, though not M1! Enough guys on this board may have actually carried one of these to appreciate it.

Talk about a nice, lightweight weapon!!! With the standard M16A1 birdcage FH on the 16" barrel, it weighed in at 5.7 lbs. empty on the postal scale. My heavier "reverse" slip over XM177 flash Hider has the rear blast washer attached.

-S&W M&P 15 Lower, receiver treated with dark gray Rustoleum primer to match upper
-M16A1 Colt upper with tear drop forward assist
-USGI M16A1 pistol Grip (NOS) from Mr. Bill Ricca (Thanks, Bill!)
-COLT/USGI early non-tapered slip ring to retain handguards
-ER Shaw (Model 1 Sales) 16" pencil CAR15 barrel 1/9 twist
-DPMS lower parts kit
-DPMS M16 bolt carrier group (I like the additional mass for feeding)
-DPMS charging handle
-DPMS CAR buffer
-DPMS CAR gas tube
-USGI M4 buffer spring
-Rock River Arms CAR-15 handguards w/heatshields
-4 position fiberlite CAR stock (unk. maker) with USGI castle nut and receiver plate
-Either faux XM177E2 slip over flash hider or M16A1 FH: depending if I am going like the XM177E2 I carried as a LEO or a GAU-5/P as Air Force Security Police (reserves).
-USGI 20 round aluminum magazines
-Vietnam era M14/M16 OD nylon sling
-comic book cleaning manual is an original I grabbed in the early 70s when I was in the service.

Here is a lousy low-light flash picture. My digital camera SUCKS on low light. If I can ever get time for me before the sun is too low in the sky, I will do a series of shots that better show color.

Hello, I am a new member from the Pittsburgh, PA area. I own a M1 carbine 'Bring Back' that my father brought back after fighting in the Bulge and other theaters. We had 250 rounds he brought back too, that I shot already unfortunately, and it has an Underwood barrel stamped 12-43 and a STD. Prod. Receiver also the cross cannon stamp on the butt and a small 'P' stamped on the top middle of the barrel. How can I find out if this is an original, a Gov. rebuilt? Did they use different company parts when they built the originals? Where else do I look for markings? It does not look like it ever had a bayonet lug, which to me helps verify it was not a gov. rebuilt modified on most after WWII. It has only 2 rivets holding the hand stock and top wooden part together not four. I was told that is a good sign too. It has the slide safety and flip up sights also. I would like to know what I have and what it is worth. My son hit a plastic gallon milk bottle right under the lid at 100 yards, though he was trying for the cap. So it shoots well still. Thanks and I hope to hear from some of you on this. Brian

I wasn't really sure how to title this.

I tried a different stock on my 1943 NPM and with it the gun shoots about 6" high at 50 yards even with the rear sight on the lowest setting.

Here is the background. I recently got a 1943 NPM from the CMP. The gun has a Buffalo Arms barrel. I took it shooting and found it a bit more accurate than my 1943 Underwood. Also, I found that the NPM would function reliably with soft points which the Underwood would not always do. The only problem was that the NPM had a potbellied stock, which I did not like compared to the Underwood's stock.

So I switched stocks.

The problem is that when I run the NPM in the Underwood stock the gun shoots about 6" high at 50 yards even with the rear sight at the lowest setting, while in the potbellied stock it had not problem shooting dead on at that distance.

Any thoughts as to why this occurs?

Should I just change back to the original stock that it sights in with?

thanks

Here is my new Carbine that I was going to pick up from Paul Imbragulio last month. It got put on hold a while when Paul had to go to Hospital. Well I got it today in the mail. It is a White Bag 100% WRA. It originally came with a Pot Belly Stock, but Paul had a Pristine low wood for it. Barrel ME is a 1, build date by serial number is March 17th, 1945, so some of the late features were installed. I added the push safety(came with JAO flip safety), because I happened to have an "EW". I'll tear it down later for some more detailed pics. What do you think Frank?

Hello everyone, I have a question about the value of a National Postal Meter M1 Carbine that was my grandfather's during WWII. I would never think of selling it but am curious as to its value. It is a National Postal Meter M1 Carbine, with U-Stamped receiver. The entire gun is in mint condition, fired less than 50 times. The wood is perfect with only one slight dent on the grip (very minor). It has a 11-43 Buffalo Arms Barrel, seemingly all original parts. Metal Finish is 99%. I have the history of how the gun was acquired (not written by my grandfather) it was taken from an excerpt from a letter he wrote home in 1945 in which he tells how he got it. Thanks everyone.

It currently resides in an M1A1 stock that has also been thru a rework, but I do not believe that to be "correct". Would a Type II be more "correct"? What would be proper ?? Somehow I've got it in my mind that this bbl/action needs to be in a Type II stock..
Thanks in advance for your ideas/opinions.

Saginaw SG #5836xxx, was pretty worn, though the barrel was in good shape. Came with the usual IRCO sight, Type 3 barrel band, M2 birch pot belly stock. I had an SG bolt already, so, since I'm not destroying the value of an original SG, decided to make it my "generic WW2 carbine". Dupage repro I cut high wood stock, repro "s" marked flip sight, type 1 barrel band that I bought from George before I realized it was probably fake. Sent it to ADCO firearms in Ohio for a repark job (If you are into ARs, they are top notch). They installed the sight and barrel band, so here she is! (came with push button safety). Total cost, About $650 including the repark

I have been in contact with the seller and although he has purchased parts from George he claims none are on this carbine. He also said this is how he received the carbine. I told him some of what I saw:

Greg, thank you very much for the answer. There are a few reproduction parts on that carbine like the rear flip sight the front barrel band, the safety and some others. This is not uncommon but it sounds as if the seller to you may not have been telling the whole story with that carbine. I've been collecting for nearly 30 years so I know what I'm looking at. So do some of the collectors that are discussing this carbine. Please understand I'm not trying to be a jerk. I'm trying to help you keep from getting in a jam if it is sold under that discription. Thank you again for your time and good luck with straightening this out.

and:

Sorry Greg, the stock (and cartouche), butt plate and it looks as if the bolt are all reproduction as well. On the stock, the "I" cut oiler slot in in the wrong place and the incorrect size. The overall metal has been polished and refinished. That is evident with the roundedness of the logo and serial number (they should all be very crisp in their stamping). Again, I am not trying to be a jerk but mearly to point out what is incorrect.

as i look over the various auction sites at mag pouches, i cant help but to wonder how many were made. i looked at war baby, and there are over 120 different manufactures of type 1 & 2 pouches. taking into consideration that there are so many and they were able to make them fast, my only guess would be 12-15 million .the other thing i noticed is how some of these knuckleheads are asking outragous prices for them, really, a used one for the beginning bid of $75 . i love a good laugh dont you. so what are they worth really???? i would say $20 max just for the fact that that they are NOT common..............lets all chime in on this ,the board seems to be dying down .thanks Brian
I know of this one, have seen two more, and I know there is one in their Police Museum. I think the numerals are their rack number ... how do you guys say it ? their own armoury serial number ? Am quite interested in this subject as for a longtime the Hong Kong Police was Brit administrated and this subject could be related to Brit Proofs etc that I sometimes see here. Any clue appreciated. Thanks. Mike.
