Here's an interesting photo. It shows what I assume is the original label inside a No8 scope case. The rifle number is 0C2116 and the scope number is 1852, which would be a 1942 W.Watson No32 MkI.

Now, at the bottom of the paper label is the "printer's notes" if you will, which seems to include an order date of 4/43. I've seen similar notes on various other documents and papers and they often include the number printed in that particular order etc.

Can we therefore conclude that this early Savage No4(T) was set up with its equally early No32 some time after March 1943? That seems a bit late for what we think is the No4(T) "timeline" does it not?

I've probably got photos of this same label in other cases, but if members here have examples it might be worth having a closer look at them.

This Case No8 turned up in Hungary by the way and looks to be un-altered since WWII.

Photo won't upload despite being only about 100Kb. Will try tomorrow.

Just had a chance to give a '43 Tula (refurb) an initial test. This is one of the ones refurbished post WW2 that are not supposed to be collectable. I don't know why- a No. 4T or '03A4 that was arsenal rebuilt is still pretty desirable. Perhaps the sheer number of these is the issue? It has matching (deep stamp) bolt/ action body. Triggerguard is restamped to match. The scope number is stamped on the left side of the barrel right above the wood. The scope mount base is very nicely installed. Anyway, I bought it to shoot and finally got a chance to put a few rounds through it at the ancestral Ridolpho shooting range in Saskatchewan. Tightened the scope bracket into the mount, set everything at "zero" and it got right onto the bullseye at 100 yards shooting prone off a mat. I shot 5 but only 4 are visible- didn't have a called flyer so either had a "dud" round or 2 bullets through one hole. Rushing to avoid being eaten alive by mosquitos I backed off to 300 yards and set the range accordingly and was shocked to find 4 of 5 on the paper. I haven't shot prone much and was having a heck of a time getting a consistant chin-weld but this combo appears to have good potential and I'm anxious to get it on a proper bench rest for more testing. These rifles were obviously set up pretty well during the refurb- post is dead center in the scope and cross hair drops to center at about 600 meters setting. Fun shooting and not nearly the recoil of D-Bombs carbine!

Ridolpho

Hi guys, Tim here from NZ. Just joined the site. Been collecting Garand stuff for a few years here in New Zealand.
I've got a couple of questions for the good folks on this site,

1. Just bought a Garand barrel, marked 2-S-A-1-43, drawing number D35449-16-R-109B. It is a two groove. I've had a gunsmith and a NZ army armourer check it out (for the 1903 barrel in a Garand barrel stub issue) -both confirmed it was one piece. What would the US value be?

2. Just bought a lockbar for my rear sight on a 41 dated Garand. The lockbar thread is way bigger (slides over in fact) the pinion. Did the longer pinion eventually adopted have a larger diameter?

Cheers -Tim

A guy from work told me about a small gun shop in his hometown. I stopped on Friday after work. I purchased this rifle as is for $250.00, and a M954 Mauser for the same price. I will shoot it tomorrow and see how it goes. This is the first A4 I have owned. Im guessing the safety is wrong. What u think?

there are no markings on the receiver that shows where it has been sent . i would really like to know what country it had served durring the war. it has a lot of wear and tear on the stock. it has seen battle for sure lol. there is also FR 43 and KKD marking on the stock

Hi,

I'm just starting to learn a new (to me) Bren. It's a remanufactured transferable full auto Inglis Mk1*.

The issue I'm having is rimlock as the magazine is feeding the rounds while firing. I've tried HXP reloads, S&B reloads, and old Brit surplus .303. I very carefully load the mags to make sure I don't lock the rims during loading. I've also tried a few different magazines.

I've found that the gun needs to be on gas setting 3 to run if that might indicate a related issue.

Any tips on what I should start looking at to resolve this?

Thanks!

Matt

Hello. First post here. Thought I'd share some photos of the Enfield I acquired recently. It's not in the greatest of condition, but the bore is good, and it's quite accurate. The buttstock wood appears to be beech, while the forestock and handguards are walnut. The cocking piece is unlike most others I have seen. Whats the story on that? Very interesting site you have here.
Thanks.

Hi all. I've never been in the 03.section before. I don't even own one, but maybe that will change. There is a 03 on GB right now that has me interested but I know nothing of 03's. I have read many posts from here and the CMP forum on 03's with a hatcher hole. It was used by the Marines, but the Army did it too. OK, really what I want to know is, is that one worth bidding on? GB # 341565721. Sorry, I have no idea how to make a.link to this thread. Auction ends tomorrow so I might have done this too late, but thanks for any help.

Had intended to enter this little bolt action in the Milsurps Competition, but it turns out that there will be a little more trigger time before entering.

We were astounded by how well the rifle shot, what with it's crude finish, fitting, basic sights, and crunchy, heavy trigger.

However, it turns out it wasn't quite regulated for the ammo selected. And the AK sight tool in the range bag was non-functional because the front sight turning spanner had it's ears broken away some time ago. Only after the few targets were shot did I realize there was a tool kit in the buttstock, complete with sight tool...

The nice thing about this rifle is that it's reliable with a tight bolt turn down and well thought out open sights. It's 1987 vintage for those of you that know when the various changes and improvements to the design were made.

Here's the first four (or was it five?) rounds fired at 25 yards. Not too bad, a perfect hunting zero, but shooting for center is a problem on the small Milsurps targets!

Best I could do, holding slightly above center of mass:

Target #1

Target #2 Figured it out, it seems, on the last two shots...

But what's weird are the 50 and 100 yard targets:

The 50 M setting was pretty close, but the 100 M setting group was way low! Maybe the ammo? It surely groups well at 100, but previous shoots were remembered as being better regulated at each distance. Admittedly, that might have been with a different rifle...

At any rate, you will likely be seeing more of this one.

I went out to yard sales this morning and came across what I thought to be an interesting find. An old military sleeping bag. I looked it over and found the tags on the interior dating it to 1944 and appearing to be of US style.

Knowing nothing about these and seeing that it was displayed very nicely by the owner, I figured whatever they wanted for it would be beyond what I was willing to risk. But I asked how much and they told me if I wanted it, it was mine for free. It had a hole in it an no one wanted it.

Can't beat that so I rolled it up and brought it home. I have at least confirmed that it is a US wool sleeping bag with a cover. The wool portion looks like new. The cover is what has some holes in it. I later found the tag on the liner when I learned it was separate, it also is dated 1944 but a few months later. I did not see any other markings until I had it out in the sun to take photos. It has a large but faint US on the bottom of the cover.

I didn't even know the US used sleeping bags in WWII. Not something I've ever seen in the war movies. All I've ever seen were the wool blankets.

Are the dates on the tags the dates they were produced or the date of the design? I guess these were used through Vietnam so there is no guarantee this one was actually used during WWII.

Should I make any effort to repair the holes/tears in the cover? I doubt I'll ever actually use it so it's not going to get any worse. If repaired, how would I go about it? Hand sewing, machine?

Anyway, here are some photos:

A while ago I bought a AKM with a Krinks Krap receiver. The hammer and trigger pins were as lose as a goose so I bought a Nodak NDS EZ1. It arrived today and I jumped right on it. Everything went together super easy. I am very pleased with how the rivets all turned out! Head spacing is perfect! There was no fitting of the bolt carrier as it slides, no glides like silk on the rails.

The previous builder used "E" clips to hold the pins so I need to get one of those Tapco pin retainer springs or Red Star Arms retaining plate to finish it and take it for a test drive! Note the "Bullet Button" and five round magazine. Lousy Kaliforniev!!!

As far as I'm concerned, Nodak is the best! Great people, great product!

New Nodak Spuds NDS EZ1 on the left and the Krinks Krap on the right.

I was recently given a Savage No4 Mk1* 63c serial by a good friend. My friend is elderly and cannot remember how or when he got it. It is 100% Savage, every little part that I can see. I went to take it apart and clean it so I could shoot it, but realized there is absolutely no wear on it at all. Not a screw head buggered, not a scratch or nick, and it is resting in a nice heavy coat of cosmo. I ran a few patches through the barrel and there were no traces of copper fouling at all so I brought it over to a friends house who is a well respected gunsmith. He ran a bore scope down the barrel and every 2 seconds he would say "wow, oh... wow" it ends up in his opinion the gun was only factory test fired. So here I am in a dilemma, should I leave it as is, or should I clean it up and enjoy it? What would you advanced collectors do?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Dear gents,

I have what was being offered as an original P.14 F-Sight. Holding it in my hand, it appears to be a bit different than what the F-Sights of Angel's two P.14 sniper rifles look like in our knowledge library - however it's different from the also shown fake. Therefore I'd kindly ask all those who have a F-Sight to post pictures of it for comparing reasons. Especially the adjustment knob on top would be of interest.
Thanks,

Hi folks, here's a question over which I hope some of you will be able to shed some light. (wink wink, Mr. Laidler) :)

I got a few years ago this stripped receiver, and never really looked at it until a few months ago. I then noticed that on the right side, there was a "22" lightly etched. I though, that's odd, maybe someone thought it was a weak receiver and decided to label it as only good for .22lr... or something like that.

Then a few weeks ago, I received some parts boxes in which I found a barreled receiver... and on the right side of the receiver, you guessed it, the same "22" lightly etched.

Now, I'm thinking this can't be just pure coincidence. These two receivers are unrelated; they came from totally different sources. But if there is some "official" reason for these markings, well they are really faint, and could very easily go unnoticed. So, dear friends, what's going on here? What should I do with these receivers?

Lou

Nice to be able to move it and dial in, very nicely done and $25 includes shipping. I have no connection to the seller, nicely done and handy for working on these including sliding one off if you need to and or want to get multiple rifles closer

With this I can dial it in spot on (or as close as I get these days)
