I have a type 44 carbine. I shot my blackbear with it this spring however that was the last shot I ever got out of it(talk about something to make you a little nervous about). the bolt was siezed. I was able to get it open with some leverage and never felt anything snap or give way and there wasn't much dirt anywhere inside before cleaning so I don't think that was a contributing factor. however now the action feels like it's full of sand. it's gritty, stiff and not at all the smooth crisp action that it was until that time. I don't see anything broken off and the bolt appears to be in perfect shape. has anyone ever seen this happen?:sos:

Picked up a Nagoya Type 99, no series yesterday. Mum is partially ground, every number matches. Cleaning rod is present, and every screw on it is staked. It also sports the oval 'quick release' rear sling swivel. Information I am finding on these is that these were intended for cavalry before they started issuing 99s to everyone. Is this info correct? I ask, because this is the first one of these that I've ever seen. It's a very interesting rifle.

Picked up an odd one this weekend. At first I thought it was a Type 38 rifle that had been converted to a carbine. Then I got it home, disassembled it, and found that that it was not.
Here's the deal. Nagoya Type 38 carbine, series 5. According to online info, apparently there was no Nagoya Type 38 RIFLE. But there was the Nagoya Type 38 series 5 CARBINE. This carbine has a rifle rear sight. It also sports what appears to be a converted rifle stock, but guess what? The number on the inside of the stock matches the inventory number on the bottom of the receiver, along with the smaller parts. The finger grooves are long, as on the rifle, but they taper at the end going towards the muzzle. No upper handguard, no middle barrel band. Almost has a Carcano-ish profile to it. Bayonet lug is retained. Full mum and dust cover. Dust cover and bolt do not match.
Entire rifle stock is finished in dark reddish brown shellac. Sling swivel on bottom of buttstock has been filled with wood. No provision for a sling at all on this piece.
I first thought Chinese conversion, but the more I got to looking at it, I dismissed that. Also, this does not seem 'bubbafied
Oops, hit 'submit'. Anyway, this does not look like bubba. It is, in fact, very unusual. I have pics on my phone, but do not know how to post pics from my phone. I really would like for you guys to see this one, and get your thoughts on it. Thanks!

This weekend I picked up two Type 38 rifles. One is a ground mum Kokura Series 26, all matching. The other is a Koishikawa(?) Tokyo arsenal, no series number. Mum is intact. I suspect this is a true 'bring back' as there is the name 'A. Bergmueller' stamped into the bottom of the forestock. Both rifles are in excellent condition.
The Kokura has squared front sight guards, the Koishikawa(?) Tokyo one has simple barleycorn sights.
From what I can gather, the Kokura series 26 was manufactured from about '40 to '41.
As the Tokyo arsenal one has no series mark, I was wondering what year these began appearing. Serial number on this one is 17629**. There appear to be two inspection marks to the right of the arsenal marking.
These are the first two Type 38s I've owned, have only owned Type 99s. I'm really impressed by the quality of these two examples. Looking forward to putting some rounds through them. Will try to have some pics soon.

Good evening all. During my quest to add an Arisaka to my WWII collection I stopped in to a local pawn shop. There was a T99 there that a friend told me about. I found it included the dust cover and was completely number matched and had the mum. Very cool! It also had a wooden tag with Japanese writing. The attached leather sling was original but hard as a rock. The rifle is a 5th series Nagoya without the monopod. I don't think it ever had one as there is no corosponding marks on the stock from wear. From another discussion board a member thought the tag read "Platoon Commander Ishibashi." I found markings on the underside of the sling that have not been translated. An effort to soften the sling with Pecards failed, so I am leaving it as is, although when I fired it the hard sling made somewhat awkward and uncomfortable. I can't figure out how to post pics to this original post but will try in a reply. If someone can confirm the original translation I would appreciate it as I would a translation from the sling. Online translators have been no help. I am hopeful the sling markings will be unit information so I'll have a better chance at terracing the rifles history. Best regards - Bob

Hello everyone,

I am new to milsurp and this is my first post. My grandfather, a WWII veteran, passed away in August 2012 and I was left with several amazing historical items that I've been cherishing since I was a child. An Arisaka Type 99 rifle with bayonet was one of them. I've done some research and it is part of the Series 6 rifles from the Nagoya Arsenal produced between 1939-45. It has an anti-aircraft scope and it looks like the stock was made of two different woods. It would appear that it has seen some action as marks on the wood indicate the rifle has been in the field. As well as an intact Chrysanthemum (well, there is a partial "X" mark on the lower half) which indicates it wasn't sold to a school or confiscated by the Allied Forces. I've read that when the Allies got a hold of these rifles they would scratch off the Chrysanthemum completed. I've included pictures below. I'm curious if there is someone that can appraise the rifle for me, I was thinking about insuring it. I think I'm going to get it mounted in a glass case. It is not something I want to lose and I have no intention of ever selling it. Should I not have a family of my own it will find its way to the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, TX. Thanks in advance for any help!

Ok, I'm just starting to get back into the gun hobby.. I was raised around guns, my dad, grandpa, uncles, cousins all had rifles and shotguns and shot them quite a bit.. I was 12 when my grandpa passed away and inherited his guns... Mostly some nice shotguns, a Remington 7400 30-06 Semi auto, and a variety of flavors of 22's.. I regret not being older when he was alive and into them as I'm sure he died with more info than I'll ever know. :( (He was a Marine in the Korean war)

So I bought my first gun of my own this winter... picked up a fairly nice looking sporterized Arisaka Type 99 at a gun show. Clean gun, has a Lyman peep site on it. It was stamped on top of the receiver "30-06" and sold as an -06 gun... Brought it home that day and fired a few shots through it at the burn barrel to quell my excitement, then cleaned it and put it in the cabinet. :)

Fast forward to tax time, I blew the bank on a Lee reloading setup. Breech lock press, scale, powder measure, and dies for all my gun calibers. I'm really wanting to get serious about this and start to hone my skills. I bought a copy of Modern Reloading which was a very informative read, that I keep handy.

But, back to the topic at hand.. The Arisaka

From what I gather, this was not a US 30-06 conversion as those are always stamped "US .30 Cal" and not simply "30-06" as mine is. I shot some rounds through it last Sunday (beautiful weather.. Nearly 80!) and to say it kicks is an understatement. I shot two magazines (4 round) of ammo through my 7400 and barely felt it. After 4 rounds in the Arisaka I had marks on my shoulder and couldn't shoot any more. I know I'm out of form/shape and that's probably alot of it.. But I seem to be getting fairly severe case bulging. I've attached a picture of cases. The top was fired out of the Arisaka. The middle was fired out of my Remington. The bottom is an (obviously) unfired shell.

[/URL]

Here are the specs as measured by my General Digital Caliper:

Neck Diameter OD: .3430
Neck Length: .3875
OAL: 2.4900
Case diameter at shoulder: .441
Case diameter at extractor rim: .4660
Case diameter .300 from base: .4760
Case length from base to shoulder: 1.9740

Compared to a casing fired from my Remington 7400:

Neck Length: .3585
Neck OD: .340
OAL: 2.495
Case Diameter at shoulder: .4425
Case Diameter at Extractor rim: .4685
Case diameter .300 from base: .4655
Case length from base to shoulder: 1.9395

What do you guys think? I'm thinking maybe it would be prudent to have the gun checked over by a Gunsmith. I found a guy that does work at his home after his day job. He didn't seem to be to familiar with the Arisaka's when I was talking to him. But he did seem to be open minded....

Or, the other question is, should I attempt to do the setback and rechamber myself? I have some experience with machine tools. I have my own mill and have access to a large Lodge & Shipley lathe that a friend of mine owns (which is tight).. But, the lathe does not have metric threading capability..... I wonder about cutting the extra barrel threads with a die?

Or, would I be better off getting a good used barrel in original caliber off of eBay and having it installed? I can find good chromed barrels on ebay for less than $100 extremely easily...

I guess I'm just looking for input here.. Trying to weigh all my options. Or am I overthinking this and the case swelling isn't such a big deal?

A WWII veteran showed me this, he mailed it back from Japan. He said he removed it directly from a Japanese military depot rack full of these. Its in beautiful shape, as long as the bolt is supposed to be in the white, from the ones I have seen I think it is. All matches except for the extractor. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Hello,

I just came from a WWII veteran's house where I looked at two Arisakas, this T38 and a T38 carbine. I'll post another thread for the carbine because its worth looking at. Anyway, the pictures of this speak for themselves in describing the irregularities. From my own research, it seems that the 00 serial number prefix denotes removal from service, possibly for school purposes. Total number is: 002027510. Is As for the receiver markings, I have no idea. It appears as if there is an arsenal mark (or two) stamped over the mum (from http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/japanese_markings.html : "At various times, rifles were removed from military service and sold to other countries or transferred to Japanese schools as training weapons. Normally, the chrysanthemum on these rifles was overstamped with the Koishikawa (Tokyo) / Kokura Arsenal symbol or a ring of small circles to indicate that the rifle no longer belonged to the Imperial Japanese Army") and the mark directly below the mum is a new one to me. Something else related to being removed from service? Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

Hi guys, just expanding my collection and I purchased a Type 38. I don't know much about it and would like some help to find out more about it. I think it is a Tokyo arsenal, unsure about the series. The mum is stamped over with three circles, possible from Thailand use?

It is not a numbers matching rifle.

This is my T2 Rifle. Bought it 1968. Fired it and found it accurate and reliable Had not shot it again. I wondered then about the turned down bolt handle. I thought it was used on the paratroop rifle for compactness. I got it out this week and again wondered if the bolt was normal. The rifle is total matching including bolt and cover.

I've recently gotten a Type 38 rifle missing its bolt. I was wondering what type of bolt and safety would be correct for a Tokyo/Koishikawa Type 38 with serial number in the 1.5 million range. Also, some of the bolt handles I've seen are much darker than the bolt body (image of one such bolt attached). Did some Type 38s have blued handles, or is this just a patina from age/use?
Thanks

Alright, just kidding. I bought this T99 barreled action at a gunshow 15 or so years ago and forgot about it. I have a sporter stock that I cut a long time ago too that I also forgot about. Well now is the time to get this project finished. Ok, this may be the first and last time I'll mention this abomination.

I bought this Arisaka in 2010. I have only now figured out how to post pics on Milsurps. I bought this from a woman who's Dad was a Navy Seabee in WWII. She did not know much about the gun. She only knew it hung on her dad's wall above his bar in his basement since she was a little girl. I asked if she remembered any stories of his about the war. She said he seemed proud of working on an airstrip that, "Somebody Gay" took off from. It took me a second then asked, "Enola Gay" and she said it was something like that. So, my question is...is this T-99 old enough to have been on Tinian( most Seabees Bn's went on to other islands but) and is this a real "Duffle bag" cut? I've heard sometimes they are faked. I know I have no proof anyway. I only paid $300 for it, but it would be nice to think it possible. He also "carved" "screwdrivered" his initials in the buttplate, but why twice? Last name Miller so that was no help on Ancestry.com Any thought from the experts would be appreciated.

Did the Japanese cut corners on the stock finish as the war progressed like the did most other things?

I've been looking at photos at various sites and see differences in finishes from the nice heavy reddish finish to a dry thin look.

While it seems like a lot of the "last ditch" rifles have the dry look, I've seen some that seem to have the shiny finish as well.

Did they ever use oil as a replacement or ship them out unfinished? The reference I found on oil finish was that the soldiers and sailors on the ship ride home sanded them off and put oil on them but that doesn't make a lot of sense. Why remove a solid finish just to replace it with oil. They did also make not of the "rash" that a lot got from the dust so it is possible.

Here is a Type 99 that I restored. It was another cutdown Bubba sporter. Not perfect but a respectable example. I made the forearm and handguard and plugged the scope mount holes. I tried not to mess with anything that really didn’t need it. Take a close look at the receiver where the scope mount holes were. You can see them if you get them in the light just right but I’m pretty happy with the way they disappeared. I chamfered the holes before screwing the plugs in and then peened the edges down. If you try this use soft screws so they will easily upset down into the chamfer. Dress off only the top of the screw. You can see in the picture I was careful not to touch the mum. After smoothing it up I had to use some much dreaded cold blue to touch up the receiver. (Not much other choice with this.) Salt Flat

This is a Type 38 Arisaka that I built from left over parts. (No collector rifles were injured). The stock, target barrel, and bolt were gunshow finds. The stock is a Bishop that was unfinished when I got it. I sanded and sanded some more and then finished it with some BLO (looks like it needs a little more in the pictures). The bolt already had a nice knurled handle expertly welded on and polished. I experiment with scope mounts sometimes and I machined up the bases as shown. I chambered it for .308. Fitting a barrel to an Arisaka is somewhat complicated and takes a lot more time than a Mauser or Springfield. I really haven't done any refinishing of the bluing at this point, maybe down the road I'll tackle that.
