There's an 1896 Krag for sale in the same pawn shop that had the No.4 Mk 1 that I recently purchased.
The Krag was once a rifle. It has been sporterized, cut down, Bubbasized, you name it.
The iron sights have been removed. It has a scope mount screwed to the receiver, and the scope blocks the safety from rotating fully.
The stock has been sanded and refinished. No inspectors marks visible. The bore is dark, but rifling looked ok. The metal is grey, no finish left, but no pitting either.
The only thing that interests me in this thing is that it is a Krag. It has no collector value in my opinion.
I think I can get it for $225.00. What do y'all think? Yea or Nay?
Two other things I'm curious about.
1. What are the chances this thing saw service in the Spanish American War?
2. Since it's an 1896 model, is it an antique (pre 1898) and therefore not subject to GCA 68 regulations?
Thanks.

Seeking opinions/advice restocking Krag Rifle

I purchased a Krag rifle (1890) that had been refinished both metal and wood. And sadly, the metal appears to have been in first rate shape before refinish with no pits or scratches showing. The stock shows several repairs where wood was replaced. The stock was finished with a poly finish and shines. The story was that the rifle was used in the movie about the SpanAm war. Could be but I bought the gun and not the story. As I remember, I paid $250 for it. It will never be a collectors gun due to the metal refinish but I still would like it to look as original as possible.

Boyds makes a replacement stock and I am considering restocking due to the wood repairs to the original. I could strip the originals poly finish and put BLO on it but the wood repairs are quite visible. I am seeking the opinion/advice of the board as to this action. Also, I seek anyone who has experience using a Boyds Krag stock. (I have used their commercial stocks without problems and find the products a good buy for the money, fitting perfectly and finished as I like them.) Pitfalls and problems? Thanks in advance, John McP

I friend called me yesterday and said that a guy brought in a 96 krag carbine. The guy said that it was his grandfathers. I looked at it today the cartouch is worn off most of the finnish was worn off. By the book everything is right except for the 1896 rear sight is a rifle sight. With out pulling off the handguard I tried to measure the barrel and it appears to be the right length I looked over the front sight and it does not appear to have been monkeyed with. I can buy it for 1200 would this be to much if everything is right except for the rear sight. I know what he paid for it and there is no room to dicker.

Well, I was really happy when we first found this buried in the back of my wife's mom's closet. Thought it was a beauty, had been there for decades. Started looking around at other Krags and thought mine had been sporterized (disappointed). Now I see there are carbines (happy). After reading lots of posts and checking the other forums, mine started looking better (happier yet!). Time to get your collective opinions. You are all knowledgeable (spell check!) and I value your experience. There is a groove for the oiler behind butplate too. thanks for your input.

Hi guys, this is my first thread that I've started as a new member. I'm aware that some of you have the resources to track serial numbers of Springfield rifles, so I'm posting the number on my Krag in hopes that it will get a hit:

Serial Number: 173147

It's an arsenal refurbishment as told by the stock. Also, on the side of the receiver forward most of the bolt (the small bit of receiver that falls flush with the magazine box), there are some markings I can't find any information on anywhere. They're half hidden by the stock (which I haven't been able to remove) so I can only see a few. The markings are stamped in no particular order in all sorts of angles. There's a 3, a V, a K, an H, and maybe even a large T? I'll post pictures later if nobody has any idea from this post.

Thanks for your time, hope to hear from you soon!

Cut down Model 1894 s.n. 4881
Just acquired this 24" barrel short rifle, shown next to Model 1896 s.n. 82530. Muzzle mikes close to .626 a quarter inch back from crown. Bayonet fits but muzzle doesn't clear muzzle ring (strange bayonet with lower cross guard ground off and "U.S." scrubbed??? It did not come with the rifle). Any idea if this rifle was cut down for military service? Cadet? Militia? Front sight blade is considerably thinner as well. Stock is varnished, no cartouche, faint proof mark. Thanks for any thoughts, Don
