I recently picked up a Mosin from SOG. All stamped matching numbers except the scope. It's an original scope, just not the one that was originally armored for the rifle.
Here is my dilema: The mount base is the original for the rifle, but the mount is not and the reticle is off to the left so I know I will have to shim, but I would prefer to shim between the rear base and receiver than between the mount and base. I can remove the base locking screws, but the other two are stuck and will not budge. Has anyone else had that problem or a suggestion on how to get the screws out?
Thanks in advance.

Hi all! NEw member here. I've been reading for the past few weeks, but this is my first post.

I got a 1942 Izhevsk MN. Shooting winchester softpoints at my 50 yd range, I was getting groups in the 1.5 - 2 in range, which is about as well as I can do open sights on my benchrest .22.

Of course, then next step is a scope and handloads. I've loaded before, but only 45 ACP, never rifle.

Anyway, long story, but I slugged my bore and came out at .308. I tried it twice from the chamber and once from the muzzle, and got the same thing every time. Can that be?

Slugging really is just "pound fishing weight that is bigger than the barrel through the barrel with a wooden stick and measure what comes out", right? The .308 is the outer diameter of the output. I didn't measure the diameter at the grooves, but they are well defined, and I could feel the slug turning as I pushed it through, so that seems good.

From what I have read, I should be seeing .310-.314. Am I doing something wrong, and if it is .308, does that make it special in some way (i.e. more valuable than the other million 1942's out there). I trust my calipers - they read the winchester as .308, and a 45 cast at .451, so I don't think its a calibration issue.

Any thoughts?

thanks,
Dave.

Howdy folks, I just purchased an Izhevsk manufactured, 1941 Mosin-Nagant 91/30, captured during the Continuation war between the USSR and Finland. The rifle has not been refurbished or modified in any way since manufacture except for the bolt (I think the stock might be spliced, though I'm not certain) So far this is the only non-refurb I've seen here, I'm extremely glad I came across it. You've probably seen that I already own a refurbed 91/30 (1932, Tula)in a post-war stock, but I couldn't resist acquiring an unaltered beauty, straight from service in the war.
Yesterday I finally picked up my new rifle. It is a Chinese type 56 SKS from factory 26 made in 1980, unissued and unfired. It is all numbers matching, the only thing missing is the spike bayonet. My friend threw in the 30 round mag as he had no use for it. There are a couple of dings to the stock but other than that it is in great shape. My next goal is to get it cleaned so I can start putting rounds through it. This rifle marks the start of my surplus rifle collection I want to have. I want to pick up a Nagant and another sks at some point.

Bought this at an auction in New Zealands southernmost city yesterday.....

Finn Captured Tula 1938 M91/30. Typical Finnish mix of parts, and no attributes of Finnish rework.

Unfortunately the bolt is not matching (I like the bolt to be at least Finn matched - its just the way I was taught when I first got into collecting when I was 17...).

In 18 years of collecting this is the third rifle I've bought knowing that it had a mismatched bolt. I very nearly didn't buy it because of that, but I've been looking for one of these for years, and its in the condition I like (used but not abused) so I told my self I'd only buy it if I could get it cheap......another guy bid me up more than I wanted to but in the end I got it, and I'm not too disappointed.

I keep telling myself it has to have been a field workshop rather than an arms depot put together... The bore has pretty good rifling with "frosting" (light pitting) down the length. The cleaning rod is longer than a regular M91/30 rod, but shorter than an M91 rod....

Also came away with 400+ rounds of CAC 1950s .303 MkVII Ball, and a near mint L1A3 bayonet for a mate.

I picked this up at a gun show a couple years ago and I'm 99 and 44/100 percent convinced it's a fake and I bought it as such just for a shooter so no worries about being duped. Story time. The guy I got it from said he'd had if for about 20 years(anyone ever heard that line before) but did have parerwork(I still have it.... somewhere) showing he or someone bought in 1991 at a gun shop in N.C. and that it didn't have a scope or mount when he got it, just the rifle and base. He was trying to sell but nobody was interested saying it was a fake and $250 was the highest offer he'd had. I made a slightly higher offer and after some hesitation he took it. My reasons for thinking it's a fake are the bolt handle and the fact that Finn snipers are ultra rare. In fact I'd never heard of a Tikka 91/30 sniper at the time but later found out they do exist. Information on them is very limited with no pictures for comparison. I'm still convinced mine is a fake but would like to hear it from others just to be absolutely certain. It came with the scope and mount shown(added some years after purchase of the rifle according to seller) and shoots well. Bullet hole 7 o'clock low was my fault, trying to keep on target through the lonnnng trigger pull is a challenge. Range: 100 yds. No rest used, I mostly shoot as I would when hunting.

Recently acquired a 1955 dated Type 53. Stock's fairly well dinged and looks as if it'd been submerged in axle grease for a while - no big deal, I'll get it cleaned up. After an awful lot of scrubbing the bore looks nice and the muzzle hasn't been counter-bored, so it may prove to be a decent shooter. Numbers on buttplate and receiver match, though the bolt's been sanitized, so no idea whether it's original - kinda doubt it though. The rifle's part of a recent batch imported by CAI. And now to my question; the magazine's floorplate seems to have a Russian cyrillic character as part of the serial number - which is nowhere near the other numbers on the rifle. Would the Chinese have used some Russian parts in their early production runs of the Type 53? Thanks in advance for any insights.

Ok, so I am looking to take apart the stock hardware on the Polish sniper I just picked up from a member on another board. The plan is to put it through an electrolysis bath to remove all the small rut spots before it gets too bad. I can do the basic parts removal, but how do I get the brace that sits under the action out. Is that screwed, or pinned in.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey guys. So I recently purchased an Russian SKS from a pawn shop. It was in really nice shape (Russian refurb), but with no magazine and a Norinco top cover with a fixed rail mount and scope. They said they ordered magazines and they will give me one when they come in, but I don't think they ordered the stock 10 rounders (and it's taking forever).

A buddy of mine has a Chinese SKS that he "tricked out" with a Tapco stock, magazines, and other goodies. Since he isn't using the stock magazine, would that fit on my Russian rifle? It may be a stupid question, but I don't want to buy it off of him unless I know this will work. Thanks guys!

I got this scope on an old 1940's or 1950''s custom Russian Nagant. anuyway, to introduce myself, I am a 69 yr old semi retired Mortgage banker. My hobby used to be guns, motorcycles and wild women. Now it is guns and wild motorcycles! I attached some pictures of this gun and scope. If anyone has any interest in it please let me know.

I recently purchased a Chinese SKS and after reading the threads here I have fairly well determined that is a Chinese SKS manufactured at the Jianshe (26) arsenal. According to research again, the serial number of 12,xxx,xxx dates this gun to circa 1968.

The interesting point about the this one is that is has NO import identification marks at all. I have scoured the gun from barrel to butt and find nothing. That leads me to believe the gun was a war trophy probably during the Vietnam war (based solely on date of mfg).

The SKS is pristine and shows no evidence of slogging thru the jungles of Vietnam or any other war zone. That leaves me with the thought that this came from a recovered weapons cache, rather than taken from an individual combatant.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this matter...am I wrong? am I right? Is there another explanation of an SKS without importation marks/identification?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm ordering a Nodak NDS-1 EZ to replace the Krinks Krap that's on an older Romanian AKM. After looking at how expensive all the tools are for riveting and barrel pressing I kind of wondering what I should do. Buy the tools and build it? or farm it out for someone who has the tools to do it? I'm not scared to tackle the job by any means and in fact it looks pretty straight forward but the prices! Is there any one here that does this kind of work? PM me if you have any ideas. TIA

Found this with another Model 1924 that had been in a collection for years, without any import stamps too. The other Model 1924 had the standard barrel. Both rifles had the Swiss Neuhausen barrels and with nice bores too. Alot of receiver markings and the bolts match. Should the stocks on Model 1924 rifles also be numbered to the receiver ?

Was plundering in the ''junk'' room at my buddies pawn shop last week and found this but it got trumped by a Winchester 92 I spied laying on a pile of boxes at the foot of the stairwell. Before I left I made some rubbings of the markings for later analysis and it turns out this is a well traveled old rifle so bright and early this a.m. I went back and got it. In addition to being a 1914 Izhevsk it has Austrian(AZF), Finn(SA) and I believe Bulgarian(Circle B) property markings. The handgard is missing and the bore is dark but cosmetically it's in quite good shape for a 99 yo rifle. It functions perfectly and shoots straight. All serial no.'s match and other than the bolt body all marked metal parts have the Izhevsk symbol. Most are the pre '28 stlye. The stock markings are very faint so I'm not sure whether it's of Russian or German origins. Take a look and tell me what you think.

I picked up an extra stock set, minus the upper handguard, a couple months ago. It is a Romanian Guard stock (with the black stripe on the buttstock), laminated wood, and the foregrip on the lower hand guard. The stock set is much lighter in color than the dark colored one I have now, and others I've seen.I searched around for a surplus upper handguard and found one that looked like the color would match so I ordered one. Upon receiving it today I discovered it was "naked", bare wood and very dry.
My question is, does anyone know what they used for a finish? Some type of stock oil? Tung? Linseed?
I will post comparison pics tonight or tomorrow....thanks in advance to anyone with an idea.
I knew something else was off, I ordered a laminated wood one and
received a solid wood one  it took 3 months to get that and a couple screws....hopefully they make it right :banghead:
