Hello everyone, I'm new to your Forum but I have enjoyed all the great knowledge and expertise I have already seen here. I bought a bunch of gun parts last fall and in the bunch I got an M1905 R MK.II and I determined that due to how the safety is made from pictures of the different models you guys have posted. Here's my dilemma, I got everything except the stock and magazine well for this weapon. It looks like someone just pulled the Barrel and receiver off and threw the rest away. I thought about trying to find a stock and put it all back together and adding it to my collection. Well it's the only one of these neat little rifles I have ever seen so finding a stock reasonable enough someone on a fixed income can afford in this neck of the woods is probably slim to none chance. Due to both of my shoulders being destroyed I couldn't shoot the thing even if I did. I checked with one of the vendors I get Laminated stocks from and believe it or not they actually had stocks ready to go for the Ross. I am going to try and put some pictures here for you guys to look at but unless someone can convince me I need to keep it I guess I will put it on here for Sale or trade and let you who are collecting them give it the home it deserves. Here is what is stamped on it that I can find: Ross Rifle Co. Quebec. Canada 1905 Patented (stamped on left side of Breech). Bolt has Number 338 stamped on it. Barrel has number 261 with the & character stamped near it. The vernier Sight reads on the backside Canada Tool & Specialty Co - 70, New Glasgow N.S. One of the pictures I am going to post has the Proof marks in it. So help me out guys so this little guy can find it's proper home. I ran the old cleaning rods through the barrel and the rifling is still in great shape and was surprised to see the micro grooving in the lands no wonder they are super accurate plus all the twist it has too. It has not been rechambered either. Have a great day everyone.

Well, I finally decided to buy the Mk2 5* shown earlier in another thread.
The following pics are of another Ross I bought from the same fellow while deciding on the 5* rifle. It is a 1905 Mk2** Civilian Target. I shot this one a couple of days ago, not for group, but to sight in. It's now dead on at 200m. Made short work of a couple of clay's stuck in the burm... Awesome trigger!

So, I got my hands on a sporterized MkIII Ross (barrel and stock both cut down), and I am planning to do some destructive testing on it as part of a video explaining the myths and realities of the Ross' reputation as a dangerous rifle.

I will be drilling out the safety rivet and demonstrating how to incorrectly reassemble the bolt, and demonstrating it firing unlocked with an empty primed case.

I have also read a theory that the bolt blowouts may have been caused by hangfires. Clearly this could happen if the bolt were manually opened slightly when the round ignited, but it appears some folks think it might also happen if a shooter releases the trigger before ignition and pressure on the bolt face unlocks the lugs. I should be able to get my hands on some junky hangfire-prone .303 to test this possibility.

So, my question is, are there any other theories out there that I should check out? I'm not a Ross expert by any means, and would appreciate input from folks who know much more about them than I. What else, if anything, would you try if you had a sacrificial rifle to use?

FWIW, I have access to some professional high-speed cameras for this experiment, so if I can get it to kaboom there will be some really neat footage of the event.

Thanks!

Good Afternoon. Just purchased my first Ross after 38 years of waiting. Beautiful rifle with just one small issue. Bubba used a long brass bolt for the lower band. It was jammed but I was able to extract it with no damage. Now I need to replace. Quick search on line was a NO-GO via the usual shops. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Randy

I discovered the serial number 463 /1917/ HD. and the made in quebec circle. on the stock. Hopefully someone can help me understand the rest of the symbols stamped into the barrel.

I'd like some opinions on this particular rifle I'm looking at purchasing.

In the top view, and side view butt stock pic respectively, both the bolt (top of the bolt body flat by the safety) and the butt stock (ahead of the unit markings) shows "DP" or Drill Purpose markings. Would this rifle still be considered in shoot-able condition with these markings?
The seller claims the rifle to be in complete and excellent mechanical condition, with a very good bore.

Also, is their anything else about the 1905 Mk2 rifles I should be aware of?

I've owned an 1905 mk2** Ross target rifle in the past, but this military pattern rifle is a bit different and I'm unfamiliar with it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

To commemorate William “Bill” Hawkins taking of the Kings Prize at Bisley in 1913, using a Ross rifle, and the success of the Ross in Bisley shooting competitions overall, a Ross-focused target event is scheduled to take place west of Calgary in early July this year.

This two-day event will take place July 6 and 7, 2013 on the Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association (AFRA) – 900-metre range at the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association (APRA) – Homestead Shooting Facility, located in the foothills of the Rockies, 45 minutes west of Calgary.

We’ll have a chance to try our Ross rifles out at 100, 200 and 400 metres on scored targets and, for fun, on the Saturday we’ll see what we can do out a bit further. Of course, lots of opportunity to talk Ross rifles through the weekend.

Registration will be limited to 36 shooters so pre-registration is required. While the event is focused on celebrating the Ross Rifle in all its forms, and it would be great to fill it up with nothing but Ross rifles, the event will be open to other battle rifles.

Further event details and registration/payment information can be found at: http://www.btsa.ca/matches/?page_id=4 (slide down the list of events on the page to the listing for the “Ross Rifle Shoot and Battle Rifle Event”).

For those from away, those dates coincide with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede in case you wanted to come see those sights as well.

Hey everyone,
I have a few questions about my Ross M10. It was handed down to me from my grandfather (who has passed away) so I don't have any source of info for the rifle. I basically know nothing about the rifle and would appreciate any knowledge you guys can give me. I've done a lot of reading about rosses in general on here. I'll post pics...but as you can see: there is no markings on the butt stock, the peep sight has been altered. I'm wondering about the number on the bolt (see pic) it's LU 424. What does that mean? Any history on this gun would be stellar!!! Thanks in advance.

Hey all, I just joined this forum last week and am loving it. I currently own a 1916 Ross mkIII. It's set up like a "factory stripped" rifle, just like the ones in so many pictures of Canadian snipers in WW2. I bought it for $150 dollars at a local gunshot this year. It's truly a special gun and I now know what all of the Ross lovers out there are talking about.

Here's some pics

Hello Everyone,

This may sound like an odd request but I happen to come across some information from one of your members on this site discussing a 1905 Ross Mark II, Target Rifle that was owned by a Captain A. Murray, who had been the Captain of the Empress of Britain for most of his career and commanded the Empress of Ireland for a brief period.
This gentlemen commented on that he has a picture of Captain Murray holding his rifle and I would like to get intouch with this gentlemen and talk with him about this picture as I am writing a book about the Empresses.
Thank you

Dear Ross-ophiles,
I am still searching for details of the Barrel Thread for the M1910 Mark III Rifle.

I know it is a normal form ( Withworth, 55 degrees) but don't know what the Pitch is ( Threads per Inch) or the Thread twist, Left Hand? ( like the earlier Mark I and II) or Right Hand? ( like most "normal" rifles)

Any help would be appreciated.....I have half a dozen Indian Army DP Ross rifles ( hole cross drilled through chamber) and would like to Pull the Barrels to rebuild them ( sleeved chamber, etc.).

Thanks, Merry Christmas / Joyeux Noel to all.
