Arsenal rebuild with all matching numbers. I think some of the cosmolene I found was from the end of WW2. Nice weight to it. Think I'll fire it a few times then put it in the Mosin-Nagant rifle display case after I build it.

I just got this Smith & Wesson Model 2 and thought I would show it off. Interestingly the Auction house listed it as serial number 14996, but to my eyes and as confirmed on the inside of the grip it looks to be 14986. Can anyone tell me its born on date? I sent for a factory letter, but that will take months.

This is a shot in the dark and should go in the ~Angel~'s forum, but there is no pistol thread, so Badger said I could post it in the regular forum. I have a first model S&W Schofield revolver that appears to be a marriage of 2 different ones. All of the frame numbers match number 472 and all of the front end numbers, including the cylinder match 3974. This seems to be common based on the Schofields I see up for auction. Any one happen to know where the real mates for either of these are?

Hello,

I have been offered this AC43 P38 along with 2 correct period magazines, waffenamt marked (but not both 359 for Walther) and a soft shell holster. I am basically looking for your opinions and observations about the pistol in general, and regarding an approximate fair market value. All numbers on the pistol match, although the condition is not the best. How would you rate this overall? I tried to get some good bore photos, I apologize for their quality. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Got this yesterday at a pawn shop that I drive by every day on the way to work. It is a few blocks from my office. I had checked them out in the past but they didn't sell guns. Yesterday I noticed they had a sign out saying that they were now selling guns. This C96 Red-9 broomhandle is all-matching and in excellent condition.
This variant of the C96 was named the "Red 9", after a large number "9" burned and painted in red into the grip panels, to warn the pistols' users not to load them with 7.63 mm ammunition by mistake.
Hello,

Bear with me as I know this is a very vague question. I plan on looking at a Luger tomorrow, dated 1941, accompanied by a holster. My question is, if all serial numbers match except the extractor, what kind of a value detractor is that? In reference to collector value, that is. Assuming the pistol is about 95% blue, nothing else special about it like a rare maker etc. The asking price is $1200. I apologize for the vague nature of this thread, especially lacking photos for an evaluation, but this only came up today as a possible purchase and I have never dealt with Lugers before. I appreciate any information that you can give me!

Thanks.

P.S. As I stated I have little knowledge of Lugers, the seller likely has less. Is it a bad idea to purchase this if I have not had it stripped to check the various small serial numbered parts not visible when the pistol is assembled? I certainly would not be skilled enough to do that.

I can think of several reasons to buy it #1 Its a Colt. #2 Its unique in that its US made for Britain. #3 It covers British WWI pistol none of which I have. In this condition it should only go up in value (not that I've ever sold anything).

I am looking to identify this magazine. 9 MM fits well. Has unusual spring that is a band, rivetted to the top right of the mag mouth. It is coiled below the follower, transverse to the cartridge feed direction. Looks like the follower has a metal insert on the bottom for the spring to rotate against. A bit longer than the Browning HP pictured for comparison. Mystery mag on the top or left has two thin retainer slots. Nicely blued as if commercial. Could be smg as I have a longer one as well. Thanks for any help.

Here's a revolver that apparently had extra scrutiny by the MoD during manufacture as many of it's components have the odd "'oo' in the broadarrow" mark. Having never seen such a plethora of view marks all in one place before, it seemed worthy of a photo thread for your own examination:

I liked it immediately and purchased it almost purely because of it's late type wooden grips. Additional pluses are the matched numbers and blued finish.

But then these little markings were observed:

In actual fact, they were misidentified at first as "sales" marks, but that didn't seem right as they seemed to be all over. So after arrivng home many hours later, it was discovered that they were additional inspection marks. Apparently used by the WD/MoD as spot check for production?

So, how deep into the works did the additional markings appear? The frame and barrel seem to be free of the "o^o" as do the springs (which mostly do have regular broadarrow marks) and screws (all free of any markings). Otherwise, the coverage appears fairly comprehensive:

Here's a group of small parts that were marked:

Even the cylinder stop/bolt was inspected. (It wasn't removed altogether to avoid having to chase the tiny coil spring down- never mind replacing it!)

There's plenty more. If interest warrants, more photos will be added.

Are there any of y'all that have similarly marked examples- either handgun or rifle?

http://www.gunauction.com/buy/11735679

I purchased this gun because I wanted a collection to pay homage to those who fought at Ypres Salient in Flanders area of Belgium. The same day I also won a 1917 SSA shtle 111* to match a 1917 Vickers bayonet I have had for 25 years.

This pistol as stated above has all matching no., still .455 (thanks to this site for letting me know what to look for), everything seems to work, no import marks, bore is in very good shape, but does appear to have been reblued in the past (maybe).

So I have several questions and keep in mind I like to shoot guns (intended purpose) not stick them into a hermetically sealed safe and touch them with gloves (not intended purpose)

1) Is this a bubba'd (excellent mill work by the way) gun or was this done for a reason and there are other examples?

2) How should I refinish it depending on the above answer. If already not original and therefor not valuable as a collector, should I eliminate the pitting and refinish? If some original mod then what should I do about the pitting? I keep my guns clean and oiled so not used to pitting.

Thanks in advance for any assistance
Dave

My father came across a Sauer und Sohn 38H pistol. after doing some research we found out that it's a variation 4, wartime produced nonmilitary pistol. After tearing it down, cleaning, and inspection we found the extractor to be bent and the incorrect magazine. The extractor was straightened out and if the magazine is held in the fully seated position it will feed and fire correctly. the grips that came on the pistol were clacked and in pieces. I have ordered him some new manufactured grips, however I have not been able to find anyone that carries either new manufactured or vintage 8 round magazines in stock. I did find a 15 round extended magazine, but would like to stick with the 8 rounders.

Last summer I went to Cape Cod with a buddy who was going to buy a .22 from an old guy in Truro. He had said the guy had a Luger but wasn't interested in selling it. When we got there he had brought down a bunch of guns from the attic, they were all rusted from the salt air. There were two muskets that were toast an Arisaka sporter that had a light coat of rust on it http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=42584&page=1 . Then there was what looked like a P-38 holster, when I opened it there was the Luger. It had no rust on it, the holster must have helped. It was in great shape, but with a broken grip. Nice Nazi markings, but the slide is one number and the frame another, slide is 17 frame is 71.
I talked about how much the grip hurts the value and offered him $500 cash on the spot IF he would throw in the Arisaka. He hemmed and hawed, didn't really want to sell it but I turned on the charm and dropped 5 $100 bills on the table. Lucky for me he took it! :D

First, thanks to everyone who provided a wealth of information to my questions re: the "Cogswell & Harrison" marked S&W revolver I purchased.

I now have a question on behalf of a friend. He inherited a Walther 7.65 caliber PPK that an uncle brought back from Europe at the end of WWII. The pistol has no Nazi markings, is blued, in good / very good condition, with the flap holster (has spare mag pouch, but no spare mag), and the US military form, signed by the commanding officer, authorizing the bearer to bring the pistol back to the states.

My friend has no other family members interested in this piece of history (I find that as bizarre and distressing as you undoubtedly do ...). He is seeking funds to purchase a more modern, full-sized 9mm pistol, and has no real use for the .32 Walther. So, he'd like to sell it, and has asked me to help determine a realistic asking price.

I checked some of the Internet sales & auction sites, but can't really get a "feel" for a reasonable value. I have personally seen only a handful of documented WWII-associated Walther PPs/PPKs for sale at some gun shows, but have no idea if the prices I noted there were reasonable (I highly doubt they were, based on other, more familiar wares at those tables).

If anyone can help, I figure it's the knowledgeable folks here. Any thoughts, ballpark figures or value ranges would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Just picked up a nice 1918 Webley along with some 1924 dated 455 Colt Eley rounds and about 50 empty casings in same.

Can someone confirm or correct the following?

1. 455 Colt Eley is the blackpowder earlier version of the .455 round and ok to shoot in a Mk VI.
2. If I want to reload the 455 Colt Eley cases I should trim them. They are .878inches long but 455 Webley load data shows max case length as .76 inches.

And finally - does anyone know a source to purchase 455 webley cast bullets in Canada?

Thanks,

I was able to looked at and take apart a Makarov pistol yesterday. I have never seen one like this in that there was no serial number or any ID as to who what or where this pistol was made. All steel frame and slide with brown plastic grips with the star on both sides. Very worn blue finish. The only mark I did find was on the back strap under the grip. The letter T in a circle. other wise the whole pistol was sterile. Does anyone have any ideas about this Makarov? From what I was told it was a bring back from Viet Nam but without a serial number the possible sale of it is not going to happen.

Hello everyone,
I just got a really great deal on a matching numbers bolo broomhandle c96. The gun is in good shape except for the bore which has been corroded due to corrosive ammo. I have heard of process of putting a sleeve in the barrel that makes the gun a decent shooter again. I am not interested in having an every day range gun, but I would like something that is a little better than a smooth bore.

Has anyone done this with their gun? What does it do to the value of the firearm? Has anyone got a suggestion for what company can put the sleeve in the gun?
Thank you

Posting around details and pictures of my newly-acquired Colt New Service to find additional information and see examples held by others, as while I have to think other Canadian Navy utilized Colts (and other RCN firearms and militaria) are out there, my searching hasn't turned up too much. Here's what I have found, though.

Here's the Colt. Still in the original .455 Eley chambering. It's my first Colt.

S/N dates it to 1917 production.

Pistol features British acceptance proofs, Canadian C-broad arrow stamp, DCP proof stamps on the back of the cylinder and C-arrow-N markings; twice on the frame and once on the cylinder, which seems to indicate service with the Royal Canadian Navy.

While waiting for it to arrive, I did a little surfing online.

Clive Law, in his Canadian Military Handguns 1855-1985 (pg. 43) states “The Royal Canadian Navy, mostly because they fought as self-contained units within which pistols were considered low priority, were issued .455 cal. and .45 cal. pistols. These pistols were usually surplus left over from the First World War.” The markings on this revolver support that statement.

My revolver is also configured and marked just as this one held by the Canadian War Museum .

The Museum entry states these revolvers were used by the British military in the Great War, they were transferred to the Canadian Army inter-war, and then used by the RCN in the Second World War. “The Royal Canadian Navy issued pistols like this Colt revolver to members of the Naval Police, guards, and personnel in boarding parties.”

The picture below, which can be found on the Canadian Military Police Museum (http://mpmuseum.org/index3.html) shows what looks like what might be the big Colt crammed into a P37 holster. It could be a different revolver, though.

Here’s another photo showing a Canadian sailor wielding a New Service. This from a great site I found about HMCS Prince Robert, a Canadian armed merchant cruiser/anti-aircraft escort on hand for the surrender of the Japanese in Hong Kong on VJ day, and which brought Canadian POWs back to Canada. (http://www.hillmanweb.com/rcn/)

The photo shows a member of the Prince Robert’s crew, James W. (Judd) Whittall, Colt in hand, accepting the the surrender of a Japanese soldier in Hong Kong.

By the way, the Canadian War Museum has an excellent Virtual Exhibition online carrying over from the Navy’s centennial in 2010. The link below will take you to a section in the exhibition that focuses on small arms used by the RCN. There are entries here ranging from Long Lees, through Ross rifles and Lanchester SMGs, to the FN C1D. Picture of all objects are zoomable for detail. It’s very cool.
