I was up at Cabela's last night mainly looking for rifles of which they had none of interest.

I usually walk through the reloading section and scan it for something I have and always come up empty except last night they had Swiss 7.5x55 dies for $35 which seemed reasonable. They also have Berdan decapping tools which weren't reasonable but no primers that I could find.

Hi,

I found this rifle from a private seller that wants $500 for it. It's probably the nicest example that I have seen. I believe the serial number puts it at 1953. The stock is not refinished and there are no gouges on the butt. Is this rifle worth the price? The metalwork and wood seem very good. There's no P on the serial number, any idea if this rifle was ex-police or unissued or anything like that?

I am posting some pictures of my 1869/71 by Ost-Schweizerische Buchsenmacher, St. Gallen. I have identified it at swissrifles.com. That site lists the end of 1869 production by that maker at 156xx and beginning of 1869/71 at 166xx. Mine at 15873 falls between. Also the swept back bolt handle seems different from most. Any enlightenment appreciated.

I was at a match in NC last weekend. Shooting my first vintage rifle match. First I had a ball. didn't win the prize only because they didn't count having fun toward final score.
I shot my M1 Garand then shot a 1911 Schmidt-Rubin. There was another fellow on the line shooting a K31. Except his had a rear adjustable peep sight installed. Are these still available and adaptable to the 1911 version? He said his rifle came with that sight installed do did not know where it came from.
I really like shooting the straight pull and would consider more competition use if I could find a rear sight that would allow for precision adjust-ability.
I asked about legality for "vintage rifle" rules and he just shrugged. Said as long as it came on the rifle or was available to the troops all was good. To be honest I do not know what rules govern for CMP vintage rifle matches.

While looking in my local hunting shop for a bargin SMLE I came across a very odd looking rifle (I know very little about swiss rifles by the way) which I though was a bargin at NZ$530.00. Turned out that after much review and comparison with other rifles on the same rack, that I was probably missing a decimal point so the price was actually NZ$5300.00. Anyway, turns out its a ZfK55 with matching numbers and 'ammo tin' (but I think that's the scope container the seller is refering to). Are these rifles really worth that much? I take it they weren't produced in great numbers then?

I recently aquired a K31 as a shooter. It arrived from the seller in very nice condition, which seems to be the rule.

I've been reading up on the rifles, and have stripped the rifle to give it a once over, using several web pages specific to the Swiss rifles to identify some of the stamps and proof markings.

The rifle was built in 1942, the stock, handguard, bolt, magazine and receiver are all serial numbered the same. The barrel, however is marked with the normal proof marks one would expect but, I had read that the shoulder should contain the last 3 digits of the rifle's serial number. This one does not... it is marked with a 5 digit number, then the various proof marks (BP firing proof is about dead center at 12 o'clock with barrel installed). There are several digits that follow in a slightly different script... C G 1. At first I thought the 1 was a witness mark but it actually appears to be the number 1 instead. Any idea what these marks mean ? And, why would the barrel number be 5 digit and different from the rifle serial number? No K31 serial numbers consist of five digits. Replacement barrel ? Or was the marking info I read wrong ?

Mike

Milsurps Knowledge Library - 1941 Swiss Model 1931 Short Rifle (K31)
Reading this "1946, starting with serial number 868,901, beech rather than walnut was used for making the stocks."
I noticed that my K31 was close to that number, 44 below. Assuming that the factory ran 5 days a week, and that they made 15,900 k31's in 1946. They made an average of 60 rifles a day. That would mean that my rifle was made on the last day that walnut stocks were used. I am estimating this to be about April 9, 1946.

http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/schmidt_rubin.html

Anyone else have a rifle made on that day? Or on the first day of beech wood production?

Is there any interest in 100 yard Swiss rifle matches in the eastern PA, (USA) region? I ask as I have a chance to put forward the idea to my local CMP club and prior to making a formal proposal I would like to gauge the interest. The program would be fired at 300 meter targets scaled for 91.4 meters. The program would be identical to those conducted at the regular Swiss matches. Certain matches would have metals and certificates handed out according to the current Swiss scores, but these would not be actual Swiss sanctioned metals, just club level.

Preliminary work had been completed on targets that are correctly scaled relative to the real targets, have the correct colors and also have suitable bottom cutoff to allow for both 100 yard zero and 300 meter rifle zero. The matches would be run on the 4th Saturday of every month, after our regular CMP rifle matches. The course of fire would alternate between the Obligatory, field shoot and match shoot course of fire.

The cost would be moderate, on the order of 5~7 dollars for a regular match, depending on the cost of the targets (They need to be in color), scorebooks and metals/certificates. The club does not seek to make money off of the shoots, but is looking to offer another event that will bring together like minded shooters in an area currently not served by any clubs.

Our rifle club is located in Bucks County, PA just off of route 202. It is within an hour commute of most of New Jersey, northern Delaware and PA east of Reading PA. If anyone from PA or New Jersey would be interested in such a program let me know.

Anyone can give a comparison between two, what the major difference and Pro and Cons?
