I picked up an 1886/35 Lebel short bayonet with hooked quillion today at the flea market. It came with a frog which looks to be in good shape but the threads have either broken or simply disappeared from about 50% of the stitching.

Should I replace the stitching or is this one of those no-no's. I personally look at it as maintenance but it's not like it is something I have to do.

If replaced, what would the correct material be and what is the stitch pattern?

The maker mark can just be seen but not read, it is very faint. The leather is pliable but does have a few age cracks in it. It holds its correct form but it an attempt were made to attach it to a belt, it would fall right off. The portion holding the scabbard is in a bit of better shape with original threads still holding the bottom half and the small "belt" loop.

I know these aren't the most exciting of bayonets these days being pretty common and all but I got one today that I think is worth commenting on.

The bayonet and the scabbard match numbers. The blade is marked 821 and the scabbard tip and the cross guard are marked the same.

The cross guard is marked KA2 No183 and so is the scabbard.

Now comes the interesting part.

The cross guard is also faintly marked L over I2 and so is the scabbard. The cross guard also has under the primary stamping No 45a and again on the scabbard only cleanly seen.

Lastly a third set No2821 is also clearly seen on the scabbard and faintly/partially seen on the cross guard.

Some minor effort was made to polish/obscure the old numbers on the cross guard but all are clear and separate on the scabbard.

I'm impressed the two stayed together through all those changes.

1905 were The 16" models 1905 bayonets , used WWI and WWII (dated 1906-1922)
1905E were The 16" models 1905 cut to 10" used in WWII
M1942 were the The 16" models made in 1942 and 1943
1905E1 were the M1942 models cut to 10"

OK so I am trying to figure out if the above is correct. I couldn't find any real good reference to 1905E and 1905E1. From what I understand, the E stands for Experimental. The 1905E I assume deals with the original 1905s that were cut to 10".

The 1905E1 I assume deals with the newly created 1905 models made in 1942 - 1943 that were then cut to 10"

I also heard that the early 1942 and 1943 16" bayonets were called M1942 by collectors only and not by the military.

Am I off base with these assumptions? Thanks.

Looking to make/fabricate from two old No5 type scabbards 1x longer No5 type scabbard for an Indian longer bladed L1A1 bayonet. Intend to sleeve two into one. Has anyone got one or two tatty old heap of pure shi........er, cra........., er poor quality old No5/L1A1 scabbard cases that they want to sell cheap. Dings and dents perfectly acceptable. Don't need the mouthpieces/screws or springs so feel free to keep as valuable spare parts

Must be cheap as there's a more than good chance that the project will fail. In fact, with me doing the cutting and brazing, there's a VERY good chance that it'll fail!!!!

Thanks

PS. If the project is successful. I'll photograph it in stages and add it to the bayonet forum

I picked this rough old knife out of tool box at a flee market a few years ago, because my dad had two of them in his tool box. I so wish I'd kept them. Dad's small blade was rusted shut and the large blade was much better than this one. Unforunately these lay in the bottum of old tool kits or the back of kitchen drawers and likely are thrown out as they don't look like much. Many are used to open paint cans and other rough duties.

Every flee market or gun show I go to I will try and save an Case xx with a Marlin Spike.

Hello,

I am searching for some Springfield 1903 accessories for a friend. His rifle's serial number is 1439293, which I date to late 1933, and the barrel date is 9-33. So, the question is, of all the variations of the M1905 bayonet, which would be most appropriate? Considering scabbard material and cut down or not etc. I hope someone who knows these can help me out! Thanks in advance.

I came across this bayonet and was wondering if I am correct in assuming that it is a Mauser 98 K Bayonet and could anyone give me any details as to what the numbers on the knife mean. Also on the leather frog it says 'gfg' and what looks like a date under it but I can't work out whether it says 1912 or 1942.
Any help greatly appreciated.

A co-worker who doesn't have access to the internet asked me to post a Australian bayonet. After reading some of the comments on this site, I'm concerned about possibly posting a counterfeit. Don't want to do that! I have photos and know the markings. It reads almost identically to the one listed on the boards as a fake - the P1907 Hooked Quillon bayonet with scabbard. How should I proceed? Much thanks for any help provided!

Hi

Can purchase a beautiful example of a Swiss 1889 bayonet with marking Waffenfabriek Neuhausen stamped on ricasso of blade There is however no serial number stamped on the crosspiece and all my referance work makes mention of this.

Is it a fake copy?

If so what must I look for? Help with this would be appreciated
